Telp got a reaction from Canute in White Paint Issues
Car spray paints are wonderful, a white primer followed by a few easy coats of white finish will give you a great finish. if you can brush finish then you can again get a first class finish by building the paint up gently between the coats, on one coat brush lengthways, the next coat brush widthways, then lengthways then widthways, rolls Royce cars which were hand painted for many years were painted by coach painting techniques which were and still are as good as any spray job. Trouble with acrylics is they dry too fast when painted with a brush and they drag, you can use house paint as well, just give a nice gentle scuff over between coats. To get rid of dust you can get a thing called a tack rag which when wiped gently over the paint will lift any dusty bits.

Just starting the rigging on my first boat, the planking daunted me but I realised I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. I started following the principle of allowing the wood to find its natural lay and then filling in any gaps with shaped cuts of wood, seemed to work ok although it could be a lot better. It's all a learning kerb and hopefully as time goes on things will be easier to handle. Looking forwards to watching the build.

As a former paint sprayer I did on many occasions make up and mix my own paints, we all see colour in different ways and although I appreciate many companies offer what they say are original colours based on records changes in law meant that many paints now have to be user friendly, so no more leads, coppers etc. I tend to use acrylics for quick jobs as it dries fast and enamels where a quality finish on things like metal is needed with a longer brushing time. You can of course use spray paints which are used on cars etc for wonderful finishes.

Get some base paints like white, red, green, black and so on and attempt to mix your own for as little or as much as you need, I myself use model paints like humbrol, it can be a pain at time so the way is to go very slow and mix well before adding anymore as colour can sit deep and take a while to fully mix. With white, red, black, green, yellow and blue you can mix a wealth of various shades and colours. Always good to prime before painting as well as it allows a bond between the surface and the finished paint work but also allows you to see problems prior to placing the finish. You can use household paints as well, just do gentle coats rather than trying to do the whole task in one go. Hope that may help a little. By the way, ink can be a good finish, especially when over coated with a nice Matt varnish to remove any shine.

I have seen some rigging tools on the net, they have a hook at one end and what looks like a grip on the other end, how are rigging tools actually used, would be grateful to see if they are of any practical use or just a gimmick. Anything that makes the task easier is good but I do not want to waste money. They are made by amati I think. attachment=293839:41uR46-zK-L.jpg]

Thanks Bill, good to have an idea of things especially making your own. I was wondering how they are actually used, do the specific ends actually do something?

Just buy them, you can get them for like $13.00 on ebay. So at that price, why spend the time making your own when you could be spending that time working on your model. The most useful tool to me is the one with the flat end and a groove cut into it for pushing the rigging line onto playing pins. BUt you will need some type of rigging tools depending on the size of the model. The smaller the model the more the tools are needed.

Making your own is easy- cut half the eye off a larger needle and glue it into the end of a wooden dowel.  For pulling, make a hook in the end of a slim piece of  hard wood.  The idea is to push and pull the lines where you cannot get your hands or where the distance is beyond the reach of your tweezers.

    I have those.
Apart fromthe hook, i havent used any of the ends.
Buy yourself a couple of high quality pliers, I use those far more often.

These tools are always handy but not esssential. They are not too hard to make yourself from brass wire and a piece of wood for a handle.Cepends on if you have the time to make or prefer just to buy. One thing about homemade tools is that one is not so hesitant to modify them if needed, as theres no capital involved. Bill in Idaho

When you rig a ship those tppls make the job much easier.  However I usually made my own.

    Hi all

I am new to the site and hopefully as soon as I get some pictures up I can show where I have got to with this my first build. I have now reached the rigging stage and like many a newbie I am daunted to say the least. I have already sited the main mast and the bow mast before I read that it is best not to do so prior to doing some work on them. I am now in the throws of putting together tackle blocks however my issue now is that from what I can see I need to put the sails on the masts which then makes it very difficult to site the blocks. My question is as such, can I just rig the boat first and then try and put the sails in place or is there a trick or two I can learn?

I am doing loads of reading as I want to prepare a lot of the items as close to how they should be made as possible, I am taking things pretty slow and will attempt a few newbie builds which will give me the principles to try something bigger in the future. If anyone has built this model I would be grateful for any decent pictures as the rigging instructions with this kit are near on hopeless to someone who has no real idea. Thank for any help and I will get some pics up tomorrow hopefully before I go and see the Who live in London on Saturday.

Hi sjors, my name is Terry, just used the Telp one as it is easier to remember. I have opened a build thread which I will now start to work with on Sunday, need to do a few photos as the longboat is three quarters finished, I just tried to do as much as possible to test my limits, I am going to give the pickle a go for my next build and I will start a build log proper for that one. I think the beauty of this hobby is seeing how people get through difficult phases, best wishes.

Woh... having just joined the forums I thought I would take a look at what is achievable with patience and a keen eye for perfection, this is just amazing, I am starting out on a few small boats to try and learn as much as I can as I saw this model a few months ago and told myself I would do something like this one day. That day may be a few years away yet, but what a fantastic looking ship you are creating. I do not think I have ever spent Two hours reading a thread from start to finish before, really looking forwards to seeing how this lady looks once finished. Thanks for the posting, really has given me some inspiration as to what to aim for one day.

Look good indeed, you can always brush some thinned down matt black acrylic paint over the joints to get rid of any shine. ;-)
