Nils, missed a lot of your recent progress but it is so great to see everything come together. Your KWdG really has a presence would look fantastic in any setting. I hope your admiral could be persuaded to let it in the house

Ahah Denis!!!! So this is what you've been up to. I was reading your Thermopylae log this morning, in which you referred to the 'Jolly Roger' kit and I said 'what's he going on about? Now, after visiting this Log, it all makes sense, now.
My God, you work fast!!! You've done more work in three weeks than I would do in a year. Mighty fine work, too.
I especially like the paint finishing with the flat black paint that you've done, It gives the hull a really nice and authentic effect.
Keep up the great work
Cheers
Patrick

Just one week? NOT fast?? Too fast for me, it would take me double the time or even more to get so far!

I went full circle........now I'm back here I was playing 'round today in my meager spare parts bin of plastic, and I came across the thwarts for a small boat.....darned if I remember where it came from. I'm going to use it in the larger ship's boat. this means that I will have to make a pair of chocks for the smaller boat. I'll have a couple pictures of what I did a bit later. today, I started off by adding the fore railings. they wouldn't line up like the other railings, and would have looked off, but I cut off the tabs and positioned them like the others. it looks much better for it.
the masts were touched up from having the third step added to them. the woolings were painted and the flat black wash was done.
all of the masts and the bow spirit are done now.
they are dry fitted at the moment. before I cement them in, I need to get all the gun port lids done. .......really don't want to have 'er on her side with the masts in place.....might be asking for trouble. the boat is coming along.......has to make a special sanding stick.....1/16 wide. I just too a piece of square stock and glued some sandpaper on it....trimmed the edges. now I'm waiting for paint to dry.......>look at watch<........yup, dry'in as we speak........>look at watch<...........wait a minute! I'm not wearing a watch!
anyway.......I'm using the supplied shrouds.......I was just reading the next step. put the ship's wheel in place........If I was to do that now, how would I cement the rope, that I wrapped 'round the wheel spool? that's already done......since I like to read ahead I'm looking for the numbers for the lower shrouds......and they are not here! there is no text about them anywhere. I think I can figure them out though......I'm a good guesser another mystery here is when these shrouds are in place........there is nothing under the channels. the holes are there.......but there are no parts that cement to them. I will have to figure this out too.
well......I think it's been an hour now........the boats are in place on the model. the thwart was painted earlier.....it was then sized to fit inside. the only problem is, it's a little too short and doesn't reach the transom.
what I made is this raised seat for the transom. when dry, it will be trimmed to fit.
I like to keep certain parts of the parts panels that I don't want to save. some of the wood from them, will be used to make extra detail for the model. I have many of these templates, since it beats having to draw them out {my laziness kick'in in}. I forget where I got 'em, but these are chocks for some ship's boat. I trace them and cut them out......that's why I needed to make a special sanding stick.......to clean up the keel slot.
after they were cut out....not very easy......glad I made two tracings, they were cemented in place on the boat. they will be sanded some more and then painted the color of the thwarts.
all cleaned up and painted.......the paint is dry........it got a flat black wash. when that was dry, the smaller boat was cemented in place, and the oars were cemented on top of the smaller boat. they were given the flat black wash to kill any glue marks {god I love that stuff!}.
how the boats are supposed to be assembled is pictured below it. I think it looks much better. here is the assembly in place on the model.
...and that's it. to think......I wasn't going to do anything with them. it was darn good luck I found that part.......the reason why I don't throw anything away

Engine stands are set in, but not glued at the time. Before glueing all the parts I must make some smaller changes to the engine timbers, not too much, but a bit of milling or grinding will be needed to fit the brass parts to the timbers. Just waiting for the photos from johnhowards associate to build all the parts in scale, or as close as possible. Then a bit of turning/milling/soldering/cutting...... will take place!
Regards, and thank you all for watching

Born out of a brain fart while joking around in the german forum, a crazy idea became reality and within 12 hours more than 12 people already wanted to take part in it.
Soon later we had 20 pirates from all over Germany plus some admiralties in tow that went to the Ijsselmeer, or better to say the Markermeer in the Netherlands.
In a well planned and immaculately executed attack we were successfully boarding the beautiful Staatenjacht Utrecht and we found ourselves in the mids of our wildest pirate dreams.
And so the scum of several german forums gathered underneath the blood-red-yellow-lioned flag.
Foolhardy pirates ...
... applecakesmutjes ...
... in short, the whole landlubbery motley crew was overwhelmed ...
... as the cake was marvelous and more important than the captains speech: "If we sink, do not panic, the water is only approx. 2 meters deep, so be prepared to only get wet feet."
But one could see his thoughts: "Oh my god, what have I done to deserve this?!?"
Finally on the endless sees of this lake: Putting up sails, everybody had to help ...
... what a delight for a pirate´s soul ...
... then the staysail ...
... and to put up the jib one had even to climb outboard defying deaths and horrors.
Look at these professionals at work.
The master gave the directions how to coil the ropes ...
... but as usual it ended up in some kind of private bondage lessons.
The leeboards had to be put down and up depending on the tack ...
... even the the tiller we were allowed to touch and steer ...
... and - big management mistake - even me they dared to try to cope with steering, so of course the company went a bit off course ...
... but just look, isn´t my silver medal glowing beautifully under this tropical sun ?!?

Build log part 60...
Update,
making the "collapsible" lifeboats...
These are shorter, flatter and a bit narrower than the larger lifeboats. The appearance is more that of a "river barge", but the capacity is just like the that of the larger boats. The hardshell-part untill slightly above the waterline is made in wood, and clinker planked. The side flexible textile / canvas bulwark is shown in collapsed mode, in order to staple two or three boats under the last pair of davits in the total boats row.
The raw mini models (I´m doing 6 of them) are made in the well proven way with silicone mold and resin castings......
Nils
Shape of the collapsible boats, (here still without shaped interior area)
"Clinker planking" resembled with 3mm wide stripes of aluminium foil
tapering the the overlapping stripes to the ends
making a mold for the outer shape hull
here the plug for the outer shape
Here the plug for the interior shape
This is the second plug for the interior contours of the boat, resin cast in between outer skin and interior plug
raw, collapsible boat compared with the size of the the larger boats
result : raw cast boat hull....
three story high, will put some additional spacer / supporting lugs under second and third boat

thanks a bunch for the good word......and to those who hit the like button. it's a start.......it needs to get off the table......it's so close towards being finished I'm thinking to make the brow a bit more oval, rather than rounded....the front windows will be more visible. I went on the porch to make sawdust......admiral's orders..
thanks again Gerhard, John, Eddie, and Pat I'll try to come up with an update soon

Sorry for beeing late, last days were full with working for my family, lots of things to do. But there was some time for the Cairo too, so I could finish the engine stands, and started to plank the hull with 1mm plywood on the outside bottom. Not too much progress, but even better than nothing.................
Here comes the photos:
Both engine stands, some milling work will be needed still.
the forst piece of plywood sheet is set to the bottom, now the full bottom is closed without the rear section
Hopefully I will have more time the next days, so there can be more progress!
Thank for stumbling in, comments and likes too!

Hi Pat
Thank you for your nice comment!
A bit more to enjoy.....
The floor to the engine room is set in again, now from 1mm plywood. This is just thefirst layer of the floor, another layer from 2mm plywood will follow with the engine. And the engine stands are in progress, while I`m still waiting for much more wood and other materials for the Cairo.
The floor in the engine room
Beginning of the engine stands. The gaps between the timbers will be filled with small pieces from wood, so the stands will hopefully look like the original ones.
Regards, and many thanks for watching & nice likes

Hi John
If you mean the 21 pages from the Vicksburg NPS, here they are. That was one of the first files I had for the build, seems that the outer lines are close to the Bob Hill plans.

Hi All, again
Thanky so much for your nice likes!
Next thing was to "superimpose" the engine to the wheel, looks good for me. Cylinder length will be 50mm, with a stroke of 38mm and bore of 12mm.

Hi johnhoward
All is drawn for the etching process, but I will have to make a slight change when soldering the parts. In the Bob Hill plans the hubs are in opposit position, but as I will make them one by one this would not be to hard to make. Even the other (now correct) way will be the same work to do, so there is not too much difference to make the wheel. The Bob Hill plans show the spaces between the rings different, the outer are a bit wider than the inner one. I`ve made a screenshot from my 3D Program, to take it to my lathe for turning, but in the "old" version. The drawing is in 1:50 scale, measurings are in 1/10mm!
Best regards& many thanks!

Hi Roger
Found the photo, SEEMS to be close to the boats I expect to build. If you meant this one.
Thank you for the hint! But I did not find the boat from the USS Hartford, maybe I search later for it!
The brass parts are not too complicated to make, that`s what I can do myself. Just the paddlwheel parts are a bit too hard to make, for a showcase model I would print them in 3D , for a floating model I want to have them from brass.
Made the missing parts, the black parts will be photo etched, all yellow things I will turn on the lathe.
Best regards
Gerhard
PS.: I just can HOPE, my build will forfill the high standards..............................
