Thank you Thunder, that’s very helpful.  I found the keel just like yours was a tad too short of the rudder post but I filled the gap with glue and sawdust and seems to be fine. I didn’t have any issues with the bulkheads themselves other than questioning myself as to whether I underdid or overdid the suggested bevelling. A photo here of the hull construction with the exception of the inner/outer stern.   Scott

Thanks all for the likes, and Thunder thank you for looking in, there don’t seem to be many logs of this kit and I’d definitely appreciate your input and insights as I proceed.    Scott

And so begins the sawdust - prepping the prow, keelson and rudder post ahead of gluing

Hi everyone, I’ve been semi-active on the site for a while now but this is actually my first build log. I’ve previously completed one prior build, Endeavour’s Longboat.  Onward as they say.   I’ve selected Chatham Yacht as a level up in complexity.  I’m attaching some initial kit photos for reference.    Scott

I originally joined MSW back in the fall of 2010 going by the name Firebirds.  I had started a build log of my very first build, Bounty’s Jolly boat by AL.  All these years later I’m getting the itch to pick up where I left off.  I plan on recreating that build log as I saved all text and photos.  I wonder if I should recreate it as is/was or edit the text to better align with my sampling of current build logs.  My style was a bit different back then and even more so from what I currently see.  It might be fun for some to see what was as it was back then.  I’ll leave it up to those who choose to comment.

What I mean is I approached my build log based upon a couple facets of my background.  From my engineering documentation side I wanted to ensure that when I decided the log is complete it would contain all details of each step from the opening of the box to completion/display.  From my coaching side I wanted to make sure that I not only showed what I did and how I did it, but more importantly why I was doing it that way.  It also contains some conversations I had with myself.

I’ve left out quite a few details in this reintroduction to the group.  Specifically how I got to where I was when I closed dry dock and what happened to regain the itch to start again.  Hopefully I will be allowed to fill in the blanks in later posts.

Well, not that exciting, but now I have completed the equivalent second planking on the starboard side. I’m trying to do both sides in equal progression for symmetry. I will be doing tick strips and tapering from this point on both sides although I did have to taper the middle planking in the elevated stern section (again equal tapering on bother sides).

Greg Thanks for the kind words, yes the maple is really pretty.

Tom.... Oh dear you have asked about a couple of my rabbit holes... The structure behind the Plaid Box is the backdrop of a model railroad layout that is built to 7/8th to the foot scale, It is a section that ostensibly is inside a locomotive factory. That will have a gantry crane and a loco being built. Sort of 1896 time frame. Based on the Crewe works and the narrow gauge tramway serving the works. I will post some pics in the non ship area. The "Y" is a small narrow gauge hospital layout based on a hospital in Quebec that had electric trains in the corridors. I will add those as well.

First a bit of sorting here are a couple of shots this morning, time to put away some of the rabbit holes.

then rearrange the cabinets and work surfaces.

Easy passage now around the benches with better access to the cutter also set the bowsprit back out.

Picking up where I left off with the cabin interior will take a day or two to get back into the swing of things (doors, cupboards etc.)

I need to sort out how to lock the parts together inside the hull, a bit like putting ships in bottles really. Big pieces that have to go through a narrow opening in the right sequence.

Now for some fish and rice for supper.

    Hi Spyglass

I don't know what to tell you, other than I am so used to it I hardly think about the process. I do one plank per side; that is, I lay the plank to see where it needs tapering, mark the spot, wet a little and cut, usually I taper to around half the plank width. No point trying to be too technical and it would never work planking with just a Stanley Knife, steel rule and rusty old plyers to help bending. Although using the Tanganyika, I can just manipulate the required curves with my fingers, as it's much more pliable than pear.

Once those planks are glued in place (left and right sides), I start the process again until complete.

Worked on wales today, and tried a few ways of offering these in the kit. In the end, my first hunch won the day, but not before I messed up the port side by (stupidly) gluing the three part wale in place. I decided to lay it as if I was a novice, with no bevelling to take into account the curves of the hull, as I know some will do this.

The result wasn't pretty. A one piece wale however, is as fool proof as I can make it, and hugged the hull a lot better than I thought it would - so the single piece wale will be the kit version. Also attached is a photo of a 4 piece wale (not tried, as I know I didn't like it - get it wrong when gluing, and it would look awful). The starboard one piece wale is just pinned in place.

OK, I never meant to plank the whole Sphinx hull, as this model will be thrown away once all the info I need has been taken from it. But couldn't help myself. this is a very quick planking job (a day), using scrap 1x4 Tanganyika instead of wasting the pear on a disposable hull - no filling, just a quick sand so I have a smooth (ish) surface for checking all parts that are to be fixed to it. I am happy with the hull lines, nice shape to plank, too.

Though this video is ostensibly about the sword found at Sutton Hoo, the footage of the excavation is fascinating. None of the timber survived - they figured out the shape of the ship, frames, planking and nails by following the discoloration in the sand of the burial mound. How's that for careful work!

    Hi all,

Thought I'd say hello.  I am returning to wooden model ships/boats after doing plastic kits for around 7 years... it was 2013 las time I posted here it seems, apart from a couple of posts in 2017 on plastic things.  But time to get back to the good stuff!

I stopped when we renovated our house and I lost my workshop - I mainly scratch-built so didn't have space in the house for tools, so picked up a couple of plastic ships and that led down the path of plastic kits for the intervening years.  Now in a new place with a lot more room, I've decided to get back to wooden models.

At this stage I'm starting back up with kits - I have started the Pinnace and next up is the Longboat both in 1/24 from Model Shipways.  Very nice kits (thanks Chuck).  But a few scratchbuilds planned in the future.

A few of my past builds pictured below for your amusement - 3 wooden ships (1/50 Schooner for Port Jackson from Modeller's Shipyard, and two scratchbuilds, 1/48 Sheer Vessel and 1/64 HM Brig Supply)  plus a few more recent plastic ships and subs in 1/350.  Other wooden boats are relegated to the shed for now.

Looking forward to learning more as always and contributing where I can.

Haliburton reacted to Landlubber Mike in IJN Hatsuzakura by Landlubber Mike - FINISHED - Pit Road - 1/700 - PLASTIC - with FiveStar PE
I had a little time last night and put together a few of the 25mm triple MGs.  These were built up using four PE pieces and I think I counted 16 folds, but weren't too bad.  Like the other guns, I think the PE gives a little more detail and the barrels at least are more in scale.  Under extreme magnification like in the pictures they don't look very crisp, but without any optical help, they actually look quite nice.

I only have to make four of these, and then can start putting together the single MGs.

Well, this isn't coming out the way I first envisioned but moving on.  Trying to fix/hide the botched panel lines, getting the paint to cover etc.

The paint I am using is Liquitex Cadmium Yellow acrylic
