reklein reacted to AndrewNaylor in Fokker Dr.I by Torbogdan - FINISHED - Model Airways
Good Afternoon Torbogdan
I am also building the Dr1 but not as far ahead as you are . I have just finished 1 of the Aileron and held it up to the wing It appears to over hang the wing by 1/2 an inch
The completed wing is an 1 inch shorter than the drawing shows but the aileron is the correct size Does your wing Aileron fit as the plan shows?
I have attached some pictures
any help would be greatly received
Thanks Andy

Ok Dr. Per the President is here! Bill you move very fast. I was going to suggest a group build with Mr. Per joining us. But You have already passed me. Like Per I found the templates to be the wrong scale. I managed to reprint them correctly. but then I found that did not match the shear. So I am going to just use the batten as a guide and frame the ports this weekend. I will dig around and resurrect my log.

Heres my modern high tech solar and wind powered plank bender. Capable of six at a time. Planking has begun on the Syren. Mostly just building in the air one plank at a time. Using CA and kicker.

reklein reacted to WBlakeny in IJN Yamato by Wblakeny - DeAgostini - 1/250
I gave it much thought but i'm gonna take the plunge and change the stern.
A bit further in the book of Janusz Skulski there are drawings of the rudder. It's also changed since the older version of his book and says it's based on the original Japanese drawings.
And since that shape of rudder was never going to be possible with the old stern on my ship, i decided to go for it. I hope it'll work out in the end, we'll see.
I've taken the dimensions of the plans which i had enlarged. There are 2 different dimensions for the stern.
First I've had to prepare a piece of pine to the correct dimensions.
With the scroll saw i obtained the needed profiles to form the stern.
Using a red marker i colored the wood which had to go, so i have an indication as where is still have to remove wood.
A lot of wood dust was the result.
Unfortunately my first attempt was a failure, i had lost the curve at deck level. I had to redo all the steps.
My second attempt was spot on!

reklein reacted to Tallshiptragic in Sovereign of the Seas by Tallshiptragic - Sergal - 1/78
Continuation of the hull. Have also planked the forepeak. The kit suggests that this forepeak runs continuously onto the beak head, but I've separated them and raised the level of the deck to match the Van de Velde sketch and other vessels practice at the time.

Have started fixing bolts to the hull. Initial bolts represent the gun rigging eyelets from the inside of the hull. These are plastic bolt heads used in model train building and come in all sorts of sizes and types, again found these while building my modern ships. Also playing around some of the brass fittings from the sergal kit - what is suitable and what should be replaced. Some of the carved filigree carvings that would need to be replaced is so small I think I'll have to sculpt rather than carve to keep them fine enough. I wish these were painted on like the later vessels of the 17th century! I'd find that much easier to do.

reklein reacted to kayakerlarry in Howard W Middleton 1883 by kayakerlarry - FINISHED - scale 1:96 - coastal coal schooner
Here are a few pictures I took yesterday of the Howard W. Middleton's quarter board preserved at our beach community club house. I was originally going to simply use stick on letters on a piece of basswood to reproduce the quarter board but after reading a few posts in the carving section I am inclined to give my hand a try at carving. If anyone has any suggestions on how to best proceed with this seeming daunting task, that would be much appreciated.
