reklein got a reaction from Omega1234 in T78 Norden by popeye the Sailor - FINISHED - Billing Boats - 1:30
The winch on those boats look a lot like the Alaska gill netter boats used on the Northern rivers for salmon.

reklein got a reaction from mtaylor in Kits with fewer Cast Metal parts.
If you carve your own parts and then cast them from your own originals the parts are still considered original work. Its not too difficult to cast resin parts and theres a ton of material on how to on the net. But I agree that a lot of the metal kit parts are a little crude. The General public will probably not notice the difference though.

reklein reacted to Nirvana in Bluenose by Nirvana - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64
The lower part is done. The anti-fouling reddish is as I want.
Next was to mask the lower area, so the blackish/blue could be applied.
I am so happy working with the air brush, the out-come is so much better than a regular brush.
Following two pictures is showing the somewhat result, this as the port has been painted and sanded and the starboard is partly painted.

reklein reacted to popeye the sailor in Jeanne D'Arc by popeye the sailor - FINISHED - Heller - 1:400 - PLASTIC
well folks.......she is finished. right after I had assembled the net thing, she got torpedoed by a rogue glue bottle..........but the damage was minor and it was repaired in no time. all that was left to do, was cement on the multitude of antennas.....and there ya go! I think it's time for a change for the work stations.....I want to move one into Kevin's old room. I may get my wish
so...with out further adoooooo....here is the Jeanne D'Arc.
I didn't bother to do much rigging to her........there were no holes to do it, nor did I think to add any. I didn't feel like flirting with disaster. I do wish it was a larger scale, but I still found some enjoyment with it. I saw that Revell had a kit on the market.......for the looks, I'd suggest this model.....Revell looks a bit fake.
I hope those who followed enjoyed the build

Pinnace Cleats
I’ve noticed that some builders have installed the pinnace cleats and others not. The practicum does not. Being the crazy fool that I am, I made the attempt.
Using a technique that as far as I know, no one else has used, I made six cleats. The first four images below are from my Rattlesnake build where I needed one very small cleat. The last three from this build.
The US Navy plans give the dimensions of two different size cleats, 8’ x 1 7/8” (the other being 6 ¾” x 1 5/8”). At this scale, it won’t make much difference. I chose to base mine on the larger of the two which worked out to be approximately 1/8” x 1/32” at scale.
Using some picture hanger nails, ones with a flat head, I filed off two sides of the nail head right up to the nail shank. Then placing modified nail in my rotary tool, I ground it on a file held in a vise. When done, I was left with a very stubby shank just under the modified head followed by a very thin shank. The thin shank is what will anchor the cleat into the wood. Holes were drilled into the rail and the six cleats were then CA’d into place.

The two whaleboats progressed in the same manner as the gig. At this point, Model Expo came through and my paint package arrive...supposedly again. This time it did not disappear. A coat of white primer was applied to all four boats. I hadn’t realized that I didn’t coat evenly until I saw this photo, but a second coat of primary color paint should take care of that.

Good morning, gentlemen!I wanted to show you something from my collection. I've been carving for years. I have a great experience. I have a serious tool.
In 2010, I was visiting Ivan Trtanj, in Kressbronn, Germany. He is my countryman, he lived in Zrenjanin not far from me. That meeting left a strong impression and inspired me.I immediately accept his advice, because what he did for me was a new and quite new direction in building a model of ships.

reklein reacted to Old Collingwood in HMS Greyhound by Old Collingwood - Corel
Hi folks, more work today using a hairy stick thingy and some of that colored wet stuff, after masking off the yellow ocre I painted a fresh line above the wale, and gave it several coats of dull black, after drying I removed the tape and was quite pleased with the result, I then moved up the hull painting in some of the details, till I got to the upper section where I decided to add some french blue.
It was a case of some touch ups including inside the gun ports and details with red ocre.
I am quite pleased with the color mix, will just need a couple of coats of flat top coat to blend it all in when its fully hardened.
A few more pics.

Update :
today, fitting out some of the crew-life under deck...., as long as there is still some access to the interior.
The combination (table with sitting benches) was assembled within the ship with tweezers etc....
Nils
All figurines scale 1:48
the hull single-planking is with 6 x 1,5mm planks....
the standing hight midships is not too much, but it gets better towards bow and stern
the hull pencil-marking left in the pic is the waterline.....

Thank you very much Carl,
I`ll be surprized myself what is cooking in the pot....., maybe some fish soup or stew... with thunny chunks...
Am meanwhile thinking ahead about the decoration of the ship, think I`ll be going for some figures out of the maritime Greek Mythology, like dolphines, mermaids with starfish and Neptune / Poseidon, the mythology`s ocean god. Have chosen his head with long hairs and beard in resin as the rudder-head figure.....
Nils
Neptune / Poseidon out of the Greek Mythology
(the figure is from De Agostoni, Italy )
guess whats cooking here....
will put a little paint on the figure head later...

reklein reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in 74-gun ship by Gaetan Bordeleau - 1:24
Here is some dumb thinking. I was talking with a gentleman this morning and he explained to me what is : Stabilized wood.
In the Knife making business when they want a perfectly stable wood, they use acrylic resin as a wood stabilizer. The penetration is made by vacuum. Could it work if I could put the model ship under vacuum?
Dry parts are almost done and all parts can easily be assemble or disassemble at this stage.

Another photographic test: Taking pictures with an Ikea $20 LED lamp.
On the second deck, there will be 10 windows aft. 6 windows are inside the limit of the frames and the other 4 will be added later. Looking at the plan it is difficult to set the width of the windows, so I looked at it a different way to set the position of 8 vertical beams.
3 beams are installed : 1 on each wall and the middle one. Then, each half was divided in 3 spaces between beams.
In a global way, these are the only measures needed to set the vertical beams.
The width for the gun opening is derived from the setting of 2 upper beams.

Thank you but in fact it is not a dark background:
After supper, no sun, 1 led light and underexposed of -2 F openings
Needed to make a hole much deeper than the standard drill bit lenght :
So extra long one has been used.
Almost everything is fixed temporary.
Added 2 horizontal U shape curved beams to hold the vertical beams.
The hole for the rudder was did on the milling and then sanded on the oscilating sander. The closer the diameter of the round hole, the better the results.
Similar results could not be achieved with a sanding drum a fraction of the hole diameter.

reklein reacted to Peter Bloemendaal in US Brig Syren by Peter Bloemendaal - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Just a few more progress photo's.
I decided against fiddling with the outside stain colors for now and gave the whole outside a clear matt varnish for protection. Next I went on with the inboard planking and painted it red. The bulwark thickness ended up a little bit too thick for a 3/16" cap rail to create an inboard overhang, so I plan to use an 1/4" plank and make it a bit wider.
