Thanks Mark and Wacko. I have come across pictures of them in books such as The Irene and Brain Lavery's, The Arming and fitting but no scale to figure out the sizes. Bourdroit gives a couple of plates in his 74 gun book, plate XXXIX and plate XL. The first plate doesn't give a size and the second plate says 1/12 scale which should be a big help. I have gone through severely of the Bourdroit books to see if they have this detail on any of their plans, but so far nothing. Always thought that each gun had all the same tools but they don't. If you guys come across the invertory of ships around 1780 could be some help. Another book that I have by Nicholas Blake, Steering to Glory, A Day in the life of a ship of the line, has what I would call plates and the fourth plate show's the layout of the gun crew. It does show the rammer and the sponge as one tool and the worm and maybe the ladle as another tool. It also show's the match tub, salt box's and a few other items. Funny how much one needs to know about them, such as how big was the match tub. It does appear that 3 matches are sticking out of the top of it, makes you think that maybe two or three cannon's worked out of one. Well Back to work. Gary

Hi Remco. Thank you very much sir. Am glad you like the cannons sir and seems that your statement is just a little modest but I do thank you. Here are some more photo's of the gun deck with a few more details. Am not sure if I will leave the curve planking which is due to the curve of were the back of the cannon truck's land. May just plank one side for cannon's and leave the other side alone. Reason is that I just don't want to cover all of the detail up and am sort of stuck on the do I want to or not decision. Gary

Merry Christmas and a happy new year every one.

Thanks to every one with their kind words. It seems that I have a small up date on Montagu gun deck. I took off the planking I installed the first time, or was it the second time but instead of installing just enough for the gun's, ran it all the way over to the hatch ways and left one side unplanked. The deck planking is silver maple and boy is it white and every thing has been pegged but have not done any kind of stain on it. Thinking about toning it down but not sure of the how or with what so if you have any ideal's please let me know. Have been expermenting but not happy with what am coming up with yet. Do know that Frolick used maplewood on his deck of his  La Belle Poule, and looks real nice. Seems it is a honey oak color and doesn't blind you when you look at it, but havn't found out what type of maple and if you know what type maple and  stain please let me know. The cannons are just sitting on the deck till other items get done and will be reloacted to a safer place once I start working on them again. Any way folks Merry Christmas and may you get that tool or kit that you been wanting for the past year.

Thanks John and Bob for stopping by.

This evening I replaced the fife rail with a slightly longer one with shaped ends it is hard maple.

    The first rail

    And the new one

The new one has a greater scope for operation.

I have also begun shaping the forward hatch, it will have a pair of lights that will hinge up.

Pete, Elia, Alan, Druxey, and Tim. Thanks for your kind remarks and encouragement. and all the likes

Regarding the forward hatch and the dovetails, I might be confusing you or I am confused.

The dovetails on the Cabin structure will remain as they are there will be no rounding. I was referring to the small Mahogany hatch forward of the fife rail. the corners on it were mitered and not dovetailed and it was already rounded, but it was taller and heavier looking.

You have got me thinking now that I might have to build a new one out of pine with square corners that are dovetailed.

I also fixed the sleepers of the formwork, but first I had to make the last beam, with a particular shape as it follows the curve of the transom and gets stuck there.

I also started to open a gunboat

Hi guys and thanks for your kind word's. I finally have a little bit of a up date of Montagu. Work is keeping me very busy these days but did finally get the metal work done on her tiller. Do believe I will have to take the tiller out to get a good picture of it. Also have installed the sweep, gooseneck along with the tackle for the rope for the ships wheel. The plan is to try to install it like Ed did in one piece but being her wheel is two decks up might just not be the easies thing in the world but we will try. Enjoy the photo's folks hopefully I have more time in the future to work on her. Gary

    The cannon rigging  part one

    The Breech

The breeching tackle serves to prevent the gun after firing, to fly through over the deck. ( Secular terms )

Scientists would / express something else incomprehensible : mass times the muzzle velocity , including the air temperature and humidity = measured at the shoe size of the gunner .......... etc. etc. results in ::: A breeching takle is required !

The breeching tackle by the guns of the Royal Caroline was probably spliced behind the breech around the trowel .

To install this required a device :

A bracket in the final length of the breeching takle and the cannon was to build.
Simultaneously, a device for positioning of the gun was used .

The gun barrel is inserted into the bore of the holder ; Breeching rope to the standoffs attached and the splice been marked on the dew.

The splice is a rope / thread in the strength of strands (3  or more strands laid together forming a rope)
The splice is then threaded into a needle and pricked with the needle through the rope placed around the trowel and out on the other side through the cable .
On the way back you wrap the splice depending on the length of 3 - 4 times to the existing Part.  At the end back through the rope out it goes back in the same way ( wrapped ) .
Thereby the end is not too thick, splice the stand again to the left or right through the dew, leave a small piece and cut .
Now there is a fixed eye spliced to the existing breechrope .
In this way, all eyes and cringels (on sail)  can be made. This not only looks good, it is by working technically still correct !

Now the work is still dressed and ready is the breechrope on the trowel

The next step is to attach the eyebolt on breechrope .

Therefor the gun is fixed to the mounting board and fastened to the retaining ring bolt in the assembly position .

So it looks when the ring bolt is fastened . The glue ( white glue ) is wrapped with serving .

On the ship the ring bolts will installed for the guntackle and tackle .

The second part - guntackle and takle fastening follow soon .

Until then, good luck with your projects

Here is an update for the last couple of weeks. The ruder is done and in place now. I am quite happy with it even if I am sure the next one I'll do will be even better. As my first metal-working task I put together a small step by step of how I made my gudgeons maybe will help somebody else too. There are 6 "straps" for Victory rudder but I think I made at least twice that many till I get the ruder in place. Biggest problem was the soldering - not strong enough - and the holes - broke a lot of 0.5mm drills.
