Heronguy reacted to MarisStella.hr in Ragusian Galleon - old new lady by MarisStella Model Ship Kits
Hello to all friends modellers ...

Here is a short presentation of an ancient lady from the 16th century. She originally comes from Ragusa, a town - republic from the Coast of the Adriatic Sea.

In the begining it would be nice to mention something about Ragusa, nowdays city of Dubrovnik :
Some sources say that Ragusa was founded in the 7th century, named after a "rocky island" called Lausa, by refugees from Epidaurum (Ragusa Vecchia), a Greek city situated some 15 km to the south, when that city was destroyed in the Slavic incursions.
Excavations in 2007 revealed a Byzantine basilica from the 8th century and parts of the city walls. The size of the old basilica clearly indicates that there was quite a large settlement at the time. There is also evidence for the presence of a settlement in the pre-Christian era.
The Republic of Ragusa was an aristocratic maritime republic centered on the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Italian, German and Latin) in Dalmatia (today in southernmost Croatia) that carried that name from 1358 until 1808. It reached its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries, before being conquered by Napoleon's French Empire and formally annexed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1808. It had a population of about 30,000 people, of whom 5,000 lived within the city walls. Its Latin motto was "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro", which means "Liberty is not well sold for all the gold".

Merchant galleons, like this one, were used for long trips to overseas areas newly discovered. The most preserved galleons are Spanish and Ragusian, used for the transport of silver from Peru and Mexico. They sailed in groups, fleets, from which the name fleet. At that time the galleons were bigger than the caravel, but smaller than the carrack of Dubrovnik. They weighed 200-500 tons.
The Ragusian galleons, something different from the structural characteristics of the other galleons of the time and of the big and spacious carracks of Dubrovnik, are named Argosies, their name date from Ragusies, adjective of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). How these Ragusian ships were appreciated shows the best the fact that the English made for them a literary expression: Argosy.

It was seven months ago that I first started to plank the hull below the wales. I'm happy to say that it is now all done. The last few days were spent sanding out the hull planking. I find that I can see dips, rises and other types of fluctuations better when the lights are off and I just use the daylight coming through the window. Sounds crazy, but it really accentuates things better than my indoor lighting. I added the stern post as well. No finish has been applied though that will be done as soon as I re-paint any scuffed areas on the wales and cleanup the keel and knee with a light sanding.

Just a quick update - I got the 2 strakes added below the wales. They were a challenge to get them looking decent.

Time to do a little finish sanding to get things in order and then figure out how I'm going to do those wales and black strake.                             One at a time!!!   👍

I'm used to seeing the planks narrow at the bow. I wonder if that will improve the lay of the planks for you?

The kit instructions simply suggest attaching a small eye pin with the twisted wire holding the deadeye. The stem of the eye pin is inserted into a drilled hole in the rail and affixed with glue.  Once again I had to use CA to bond the wire to the wood. (The chainplates mounted on the hull are not connected to the deadeye - just simulating the practice on the actual ship) I’ve “tested” each one with a good tug to see if they may hold when under tension from shrouds and don’t expect too many challenges there!  A long time from now at the current rate!!!

It has been a while since last post. I finaly spare some time and get back to AVOS! Only few details need to be added. One of them was fastening of yawl. The equipment (oars, yards etc.) is not finished yet. Will play with that later.

Thanks Chuck - and everyone for all the likes...
I have finished up the other side above the wales and got everything rough sanded.  Below are a few pictures of the current state of affairs.

Time to review Chucks videos about bending the planks and getting a good fit.  I have to keep telling myself to be patient and not get in a hurry.
Sometimes that's the hardest part !!!

It may not look like it in the picture but the planks are tapering. I made some tic strips to guide that process so I feel relatively confident about the taper.

Masa, so nice - happy that you found the build to your interest - thanks indeed

Finished up this work for now - will determine proper length after base of case has been finished. Returning to the Vasa for some fixes.

As always thanks so much for dropping by, Likes and comments

Just another short update with some progress photo's. I start adding some black to the model, added the black strake and one of the moldings. The only disappointing bit was that the masking tape I used pulled some of the top fibers off the surface of planking below the top black section. I have started sanding that back but it will/may affect the way the staining will look when I get to it.
I have also made a small panel with leftover strips which I will use to trial the stain colors and the tree nails before I go all gung ho on the model. I will probably use a small section to get the masking tape to pull some fibers off to see what it does.
    Here are some photo's.

Whilst plodding on on coppering the hull of the Stefano (also from MarisStella) I have started the Batelina as side project.  Very nice kit with very nice wood.  I’m enjoying the build.

The 2 or 3 Batelina’s I‘ve seen on MSW all look terrific.  Yours is very handsome. Well Done!

The coppering is going to be a long term project.  I expect to get perhaps 10-20  plates per hour.  I am using CA glue despite my general dislike of the substance.

This is a pretty big hull.  Makes me glad the Winchelsea won't be coppered!!

    The lower deadeyes are installed.

Each was wired with a small eyebolt that attaches it to the main rail.
