    Thanks for the contribution guys,

at least now the question is reduced to wether the pw had bronze or iron guns, not clear at the moment.

    for now I'll assume bronze.

here's my first attempt at carving them:

I assume that by leaving the opening closed by a thin wall, so that the silicone will not completely encircle the handles I will actually be able to cast them...

If someone as has a reason to beleave other wise please let me know ;-)

    Best,
    Michiel

We take a beer on the fact that the highest point has been reached!  In Dutch this is called pannenbier!

I will not get any higher on the Batavia.

I misspelled "Rode". It should be "Roode"
Probably somewhere on earth and maybe a ship as well. I know it is a restaurant in Amsterdam

Hey guys - thank you all for your comments on the lion.  I didn't really had any good example how to make the lion, then just some photo's of the original.

I just started to sculp - and it worked out quite well!

It only  turned out my lion is a bit more well fed then the original one on the Batavia

The "Chinese" style of the lion could well be right. I don't know if it had started by the early decades of the 17th century, but certainly by the end a lot of ships' decoration was in this style, as the exotic nature of Chinese art became very popular and lasted for quite a while (have a look inside the Royal pavilion in Brighton of 1805 to see some classic examples of "chinoiserie").

D Day - 70th Aniversary. My hat off to all of them.
Lots of stuff going on around here in Southsea, few interesting planes about.
I'm going to dinner tonight at a pub in Southwick.
The old landlady there told a story about serving Eisenhower his G&T and Churchill his Brandy.
Southwiack house was where a lot of D Day was planned and directed from and they were both there during the invasion.
The map room can still be visited with the original wall map.
    http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/103188
The two guys who created it (toy makers) where then held in Southwick House until September for security.
I know a lady that lived in Southsea at the time, just before D Day her and a friend were amazed at the sheer number of tanks gathering.
So they decided to follow the column back to see how far it went.
Several hours and fifteen or more miles later they gave up and came home!

June 6, 1944. Allied forces dispatch an invasion fleet of nearly 7,000 vessels to conduct amphibious landings in Normandy. The "greatest generation" of many nations shows their resolve during what would be described as their longest day.

Instead of the name "Batavia" the ship should be called "De Rode Leeuw" (The red Lion).

    Nicely sculpted.

Next step - the lionfigure on the bow

I already had made the head of the lion - which some people thought was a dogs head.

This lionhead was glued onto the bow:

Then I sculpted the body of the lion on both sides of the bow:

Third step - extra manes to cover the gap between head and body:

And then some painting to make it more fearsome:

Again - photos are not of the best quality. When the model is finished I will make some more profesional images and post these.

To add to the last post:  they fired the guns with approx. 200 grams of gunpowder and a canonball made out of an old newspaper.
In real the canons where fired with 2 kilograms of gun powder.

These are 6 pound caliber canons - this means the canonball ia about the size of a cricketball (or a baseball-ball) and weights about 6 pounds or 3 kg.

We had a discussion about the force of such a canonball - if it could smash right through the shipswall or not.

We where not sure. Some said it could, others had their doubts.

In the meantime on the Dutch forum we have a nice Anglo-Dutch ship discussion going on. Great fun!

This however must not stop us from doing what we like to do - modelbuilding.

The lantern is finished - including the little door in it to light the candle - and then mounted onto the ship.

These are the last shots with the flags in place. Taken on a light table.
I painted the VOC emblem on the flags as this was the era that the VOC had yachts. I omitted the one sided British flags that came with the kit.
In a couple of months I will add the display case pictures.

Wooden Ships by Peter H. Spectre and David Larkin

This book covers wooden ships from simple very early boats through contemporary wooden power craft.

The best part is a section on building a full size replica of SUSAN CONSTANT, a ship from around 1607. The thrust of the section is the build with many great photos. But, additionally, there are photos of a model ship.

The whole book aided my understanding of why wood ships are built as they are. It compared and contrasted merchant ships to warships, as well as different classes of warships.

This is a good read for an over view of wooden ships

The photographs answered a few questions I had about the build I am doing, even though my ship was not specifically mentioned.

Just got my copy from Amazon.

    Large format 10.5" BY 10.5"
    340 pages
Lots of big really clear pic's some in full color
A number of original draughts .I like the fact that the author has not gone the route of using redrawn plans.

I ordered a "used like new" copy and it was less than $30 including shipping. Dirt cheap compared to the price of some books.

This book covers all of the English royal yachts from the Stuarts through today. It's well organized and clearly written. The volume makes it possible for me to untangle the 19 different yachts named "Mary" .

And best of all (one of my pet peeves) they have arranged the pages so that the pictures and the plans don't attempt to straddle the gutter in the center of the pages. You can actually see the whole thing.

The pictures and the plans are so well done that it made me want to sit down and start work on a yacht right now

This one is a keeper and I highly recommend it.
