  1. I must be into ship building for the long haul now. While working on the frames I couldn’t stand it any longer, took the plunge, and purchased the Byrnes Ropewalk which arrive a few days ago. Another of Jim’s machines I’m going to have great joy operating or should I say learning to operate at this point. Anyway thought maybe you all would like to see my first shot at making some cordage of three strands from some of DMC’s cotton crochet thread. I’ll be trying other threads also and will be looking for Gutermann Polyester Mara 220 which I understand is a good prospect. Another part of the learning of course will be to determine the size of the cordage in scale that I’m making and how to calculate the finished size coming off the Ropewalk. All this is fun stuff to me. My first rope looks a bit lumpy to me and another obvious thing will be how to deal with fuzz especially if one choses to use cotton. Supply Thread
  2. That's good to hear Martin. Looking forward to seeing you at work in the shop again.
  3. Thanks Russ. That which I've underline is spot on with your technique that I learned with the last session. I almost look forward to drawing treenails now........ but not quite.
  4. Thanks for the encouragement Daniel. I have all the frames assembled now and starting to do cleanup and truing. I’ll stack them to make sure the height of each is correct, etc. I’m a bit nervous about this process hoping I haven’t done to bad of a job. That’s another plus for scratch building I think. If at first you don’t succeed do it again. On another note as I finished making the treenails for the last frame I realized that I was starting to get the hang of making them. What a struggle it has been up to this point. For me it seems the best approach is in careful prepping of the bamboo sticks before introducing to the draw plate. Even found I do a much better job of drawing the treenails holding the plate and not mounting in a vise. At the start if my bamboo sliver is not reasonably square or symmetrical I throw it in the trash bin and prepped another before even trying the draw plate.
  5. Alright rocker. Seems to me you have your priorities straight. Enjoy the visit.
  6. Excellent Grant. Thanks very much for your continuing photos and notes. I have Mondfeld’s “Historic Ship Models” open to the Armament section here at the work station now. Really a great reference work I think. Your knots and seizing look splendid. BTW, a double tot of Nelson’s Blood to the lady of the ‘Sail Makers Shop’.
  7. I go along with Joss on the stain choice. Those clamps look handy. Thats something I need to start thinking about.
  8. Your cordage looks very good and the colour you arrived at I really like too. I also think your breeching rope around the cascabel and your seized splice looks very good also. I’m wondering if you will seize the other end of the breeching ropes to their ring bolts before installing? I lose track of the very small size when looking at the photographs but when realizing just how small you’re working with it becomes even more impressive. All top drawer Grant.
  9. The only references I found in my limited library where ‘they were short’. Glad Rusty had some information on this and I’m going to follow with his lead too. Thanks for posting the question Pete. Now noted in my shop notes.
  10. Now you've done it Rusty. Gun carriages Bloodwood or Redheart........ The cannon will be proud to be carried around on those carriages.
  11. Thanks Joss. I take that as encouragement and will try to remember that a little at a time can go along way.
  12. Hi Pete, Sent your a PM on the Bell Forest Products purchase. Man, there ain't enough gold to make me contract treenails.
  13. As your style, well thought out and executed. Cracker Jack work! Another question. Like your treenails and wondering if they are drawn bamboo trennals?
  14. I don’t know if it’s the land lubber in me but these bamboo treenails are starting to put a twist in my nickers. Between scraping and pulling they’re becoming very labor intensive. I saw in Rustys’ log that he is going to make some treenails out of boxwood for his decking. Since my Jim saw arrived and I have some boxwood timber in the inventory now I’m going to rip some boxwood blanks and try pulling those. But, I’ll finish out the frames with the bamboo or loose ‘teredo navalis’ worms on’um.
  15. Hang in there rocker. I know it sometimes feels that we have the water pumped out and then the bilge fills again. We look forward to you being able to stay after the Triton for longer periods without distractions. All the best.
  16. Good show. Now I've yet to cut anything. But do have a block made as suggested in the HobbyMill article and will now make a few push sticks also as soon as I locate my thin plywood.
  17. Looking good Pete. BTW, welcome home and its goodto see you've returned to the shipyard.
