I think I just glued BBs or lead shot into the nose and into the space behind the engines. I think the drop tanks are also forward of the main landing gear but I don't remember needing to put anything in them. I think there is room inside the main wings as well. Of course you can just make a stand and glue the wheels to it.

Looks like at least one of your three measurements was right on! Nice work.

Super recovery, OC I think the new setup looks MUCH better than the old one, and should certainly be stronger! I do think I missed out on something though, as Carl would say. Why did you make the canvas around the searchlights in three pieces rather than just one? Again, it really is looking great.

Hello from therealangrysailor

Hi Jake, Welcome to MSW. I don't have any information on kits of the Kidd, but her home port is about six blocks from my house and if you need pictures that can be taken from the bluff overlooking the dock I could do what I can with the equipment I own. All subject to when she is here of course. -
I agree with Dirk. With the exception that the one is open I would have never guessed that they were not from the same source. Fantastic modeling.

????? I thought that was what I was referring to. Use the second unused Infi launcher as parts for the closed veteran launchers. At any rate Koppalakki seems to think that the veteran units are as detailed as needed and that was not the issue he was referring to in his first post. I guess I don't write all that clearly sometimes, especially when I try and condense it down to as few words as possible for me.

Great work OC Looks like everything is coming together just right. In fact the funnel looks jut like you would expect on a ship in dry dock for extensive repairs!
-
Sorry that things went so badly OC Do you think it would be easier to just copy the platform onto a piece of plastic and make an entirely new unit? If you have the plastic sheet and dowels already it would seem like it would easier and cleaner than scraping and sanding ETC.

Better watch it, at this rate you will need to start the rigging soon! Great looking work.

That is a whole new level of detail! I can't even imagine what they look like in person, little pieces of jewelry!
-
Just shows you how hard it may be to see her in the early morning ocean/land mist as she closes in on the coast! (My imagination runs away sometimes)

You mean you haven't started it yet? If you do half as well as you did on the Independence then they will make an impressive pair. https://www.amazon.com/Trumpeter-Freedom-LCS1-Littoral-Combat/dp/B005SZ5CIW https://www.hobbylinc.com/trumpeter-uss-freedom-lcs-1-lottoral-combat-ship-plastic-model-military-ship-1:350-scale-4549?source=froogle&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnZXbBRC8ARIsABEYg6CpAf7E4zJ9N12j7MjnsnzQeed6JcFebN9EDLREl4v2iCcSMlGuyv8aAqKpEALw_wcB https://www.amazon.com/Bronco-BNCN5028-Worth-LCS-3-MODEL/dp/B00B7ZD5Q8/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_21_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DBTVCJ2CD10VCY43MMSV I agree, I don't really know which design I like better, but the Freedom does look impressive underway. At 47 knots though I suspect it is quite the ride.

OC You could possibly do something similar with dry brushing with a small brush. Kind of like a woman doing makeup.
-
I would be willing to bet money on it. May have some optical properties as well.

They were the top of the line in WWII. Their upgrades and modernization came years later.

There is this one as well: According to Wikipedia, there are 9 in the class with 6 more to go. i think this would make an interesting model as well.

I don't know about normal but there are now 7 in service, 3 fitting out, 4 under construction, and 1 ordered in the class, so there must be something the Navy likes about the design.

One thing you could possibly do. I have seen pictures of gun barrels on ships after battle and the paint on the barrels is flaking off from the heat, and the area around the turrets are a mess. In the case of large guns this can apply to even the superstructure closest to the guns. Shore bombardment can burn up a lot of ammo in a relatively short time.

It always made me wonder what the Arizona, Pennsylvania and other US WWI battleships would have been like if they had gone through similar major modernization's between the wars. The Japanese did a pretty good job on their older ships as well.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
