15' Dinghy by Bedford - FINISHED - 1:1 scale
lmagna replied to Bedford's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Impressively beautiful looking boat. It will be interesting to see how she sails. -
Another thing that helped the aircraft get off the deck was that they would wait to accelerate until the ships bow would start climbing in the trough of a wave trying to time it so that the plane reached the end of the deck when the ship was on the up angle. The Hornet was still carrying her normal planes below but of course they could not be used until after the bombers had been flown off the deck. They were so worried that they had been discovered that they launched several of their fighters almost as soon as the last bomber left the deck and they turned and ran.

I think my skill set was more like gluing the sprues level back then. May still be that level come to think of it!

Great build Carl I enjoyed watching it happen.

You could make the decision pretty much at any time before installing the rudder really. If you intend to pain it then you could do so and if later you decide you really want that part to be wood you could just double plank it. Then if you change your mind again you can just paint it again. I have it easy with the Providence. I always intended to paint everything that in my opinion should be painted, so for me it's just a matter of color and paint/stain method. Good luck

Hi Al I thought I would throw in a comment here even though I am not really qualified. Was your original desire to keep the counter as raw wood like the sides of the hull or were you always intending to paint it? If you are going to paint the transom blue anyway then it would possibly be silly to not paint the counter to match. If you were really wanting to do the wood thing then it would be a shame to have to give up your real desire. Would it be possible to just double plank the counter with very thin veneer strips of the same wood you are using as planking elsewhere? The trim fashion pieces should hide the fact that the counter is double planked. Just an idea from a real wood butcher, not just a rank amateur like yourself.

This is a kind of basic but fun kit that lends itself to all kinds of fun stuff. I have one as well that someday I will probably get back to just because it is so fun and relatively undemanding. It will be interesting to see what you do with yours. Good start so far.

Thanks for giving it a go and showing us that it can be done! I was pretty certain that you would be able to do it.

Greg The B&W enhances the detail even more than in the color pictures somehow. That is a Very busy superstructure. It is almost as if she is passing under a bridge and we are looking down.

I'm going cross eyed just looking at the pictures! I can only guess how hard it is to make these things! Great work OC.

Fingers OK, forehead not so much! For me personally getting them stuck on my fingers would not be an issue anyway as I would never be able to pick them up and hold them in my fingers in the first place.

I would have to. I got a letter from our recycling company this month and they raised my monthly bill by several dollars stating that the recycling system was no longer working and they needed to make up for lost revenue! Why does it not surprise me that yet again some required Government mandate has gone belly up and costs me even more for not working?

Easy for you to say Sam. People keep saying the same thing to me about planking the "right" way. I guess that is where I went wrong, no fireplace. I have scrap stuff from RC builds 25 years ago and a giant doll house that was started almost that long ago! When one box fills up I just start another box! Then there is my plastic stock pile, my brass, aluminum, and steel. The list is really pretty extensive.

You mean I get to blame Sjors for my bad behavior? I need to do channeling more often! Good to see a little progress on this build Denis. Looking good. You know you won't be able to resist letting us in on the insanity you are contemplating. Might as well let us in on the secret now.

Nice selection Eugene Will they be sold already blackened? Also other than the extra band next to the touch hole I am having trouble knowing what the difference is between the CN00280 and the CN10280

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
