Nice work, Jim. I do like the "unusual" topic of this log for a build.

It depends on the sheet actually.....but a few weeks. It doesnt ever entirely go away. It will stay yellowish as opposed to tan. The finish you use is important. Sanding sealer keeps it the lightest and less intense. Then wipe-on-poly makes it a bit deeper. Oil based finishes really bring out the deepest color. I have not tried any waxes however.

AH.... Another hobby I was cured from at an early age! I always wanted to build the super fast predator of the skyies rather than the Piper Cub I should have been building and weeks of building ALWAYS ended up in seconds of re-kitting!

Thanks Piet, and thank you all for the likes
Before I ruin everything ... with my brush, here is the, still in brass, "railed" ship ship's boats added for some more colour and the port and starboard lights ... won't be long now ...

That's just it. I'm not stretching it, in fact I had never heard of it before.

Sorry I thought "Rig That Thing" was the tool you were using.
Thanks for straightening me out.

Very nice looking rigging Carl
If you don't mind, what kind of line did you use for the rigging. It looks very scale and doesn't over power the ship.

Mark, ANCRE has a book called “French Frigates” The frigates in the French Navy 1650-1850 (available in English).
l have not seen the book so don’t know if it would be of any help to you. Maybe ANCRE could help point you in the right direction for you carving details anyway.

Next up is the decking, seats , ceiling, top rail and rudder. all in all a great little kit. I highly recommend it.

Next is the planking. Very easy as all the planks are pre-shaped and laser cut. Make sure you number them and remove prior to use. the white line towards the top is part number 15 sanded even.

This is where this kit and the Model Shipway differ greatly. In this kit you find very pliable, when wet, pear veneer strips to make the ribs. There are also slots in the keel and side pieces to slide the ribs through. Only glue at the bottom and side slot, not directly to the bulkheads. I discovered that the because you could not glue to the bulkheads they really didn't help in forming the ribs so I removed them early. made getting the ribs through much easier. this is what you have when finished.

After the Bulkheads are placed in the Assembly board, the keel assembly is glued to the bulkheads. Make sure you only glue the notched area. The Transom (13) is added to the stern. I could find no where in instructions where you were directed to attach side pieces 15R &L so I went with the photos. Glue only to the bow and stern NOT the bulkheads.

Could have fooled me with your last build. It reminded me that I am just a mere mortal.
I still need to set a date to get over your way and see it in person.

I am very much looking forward to what a master can do with this kit and see what my chances might be as I have the 95 mm boat in my Phoenix kit!

Hi Piet
You might consider only doing a couple or doing more in one than another. As Jud says the flash part of the smoke plume is only for a fraction of a second and all of the guns would not be firing right at the same second.

lmagna reacted to Roger Pellett in Medway Longboat 1742 by Chuck - FINISHED - 1/2" scale
Perhaps not 4in x 4in but Steele says that floor timbers for a 32ft longboat are sided 3in, moulded 5-1/4 in at the throat and 3in at the head. Futtocks were sided 3in, moulded 3in at the heel x 2-3/4in at the head. These were heavily built boats intended for hard use.

The last person of a nautical nature I got to sit down and talk to one on one was a WWII U-boat captain. He had started out the war as a sub,(meaning lower class) officer and spent the following patrols working his way up to first mate. He then went to Command officer's school and when he returned was given command of a new sub. He was only able to make one patrol before the war was over and only sank one ship. He said he pretty much spent the rest of the patrol just trying to stay alive. He of course was able to get back to France and the war was over before he could be deployed again.
That meeting was over twenty years ago and even though he was surprisingly well preserved at the time I am pretty sure he is dead by now. For some reason I can remember his face and voice, (He also spoke very good English) but his name escapes me, something I thought would never happen as I was so impressed at getting to meet and talk to him at the time!

OK time to sneak in some admittedly poor pictures just to prove that I have been doing something. Didn't get much done and what makes it worse I may be tearing some of it off again as I am not completely happy with it.
First thing was to place a 2018 Penny I found at the foot of the mast. all sailing vessels are supposed to have a coin under the mast base for luck. In this case I couldn't wait until later as by the time I step the mast I will no longer be able to reach the mast base.
Then I installed the first piece of the wales. Had to redo it a couple of times in places and to be honest I anm still not all that happy with the results and may rip it off again. Kind of important to get this right as all the rest of the planking is based on it. Mess it up and everything that follows will also be messed up.
I also threw in a picture of the stern timbers that really took more work than it looks.
Another thing I need to figure out how to do is take descent pictures. I have never taken closeup pictures like this with the micro setting before and compared to others I see on this forum they look like complete junk! Only one of them is even in focus! Maybe I will try again tomorrow with the outside light coming through the window, and see if I can do better.

Pictures hell! What would be scary would be to box the little terrorist up and SHIP her to them! Luckily she has pretty much left the Providence alone since I moved it to the new work area. The Admiral's crafts after the Terrorist cat got them though............ Pictures of a couple of them would truly be gruesome!
