lmagna reacted to Egilman in HMAS Vendetta 1925 by cog, popeye the sailor, and RGL - FINISHED - Showcase Models -1/350 - PLASTIC
Neither can I, I'm learning this on the Gwin, it looks beautiful, and yes it takes time, but also skills and lessons learned brought forward from the past....
Some of us just don't have it, we aspire to it, willing to do the work to get us there, but there is nothing short of absolute experience to get to that level of building.....
Some of us (like me) will never get there...

Kevin, you can, it just takes time. HMAS Vendetta is quite doable, the larger ships are a different matter as there are so many repetitive actions, e.g. making 28 tripple AA guns of a 32 parts gun. Getting older has it's problems too, because you get headaches more easily from staring at those minute pieces, but if you take a break at regular intervals, again it should be doable.

If you took your time you could, it’s a bit like eating an elephant. The folks that scratch build stuff and carve, I could never do, this is just putting stuff together in order

lmagna got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Bismarck by Channell - Trumpeter - 1/200 - PLASTIC
Had to follow each link one at a time but I can't believe how crisp everything is even in super zoom. Makes me feel like I'm walking the 5.9" gundeck while they are being installed. Very clean and crisp work. Looking forward to even more.

Next build is the HMS Zulu. A tribal class destroyer that has a generic PE set from White Ensign Models. It’s going to be a very aftermarket kit with 3D printing from Micromaster in NZ

We have something in common other than this forum and love of ships Mark.
My daughter-in-law was the reason I was able to get my shots as well. This state is pretty much in chaos and totally lost when it comes to shots. I don't even think they have covered 50% of the recognized seniors yet and the vaccine has been out for months now! There was another story today where a senior couple had to drive hundreds of miles across the state to get a shot. There seems to be no cohesive leadership on this effort at all.

Welcome Robert. nice job on your Constellation
Well, I finally got all the lower gun ports cut out and lined. Don't think I messed it up too badly. Did have to do some sanding of the upper sills in order to get the cannons to protrude through the gun ports. Now I have to layout and cut out the upper gun ports. And the instructions call for the installation of the "clear" (manila colored) and dark (walnut colored) 0.5 mm thick second planking - more like a veneer than planks but it does improve the overall appearance.

Jack,
This looks like a professional workshop to me, how well organized. I just found out that I'm not the only one who has suffered "the twill I restart" I bought the same kit some 3 years ago and now I'm steady working on it, when work and space allow. I'm happy to have found this website and just scribed in, I will start learning and make my own posting too this weekend.
For now happy building and thank you for sharing your project, we'll speak again.
Regards
Robert

lmagna reacted to Lt. Biggles in HMS Warspite by Lt. Biggles - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 - PLASTIC - MK1 detail up set
I’m definitely not OCD but probably should have been haha.
But been able to do a good amount over the weekend. Got most of the hull details on.
From what I could find the stern lower port holes were covered up before mid 1943.
I’ll wait till it’s painted before I add the barrels.
My last build really taught me what stages to spend lots of time on and what parts don’t matter so can already tell this build will be abit faster and hopefully better than my last one... fingers crossed!

Looking good, good move on filling in the lower ports at the stern, as they would have been a wee bit close to the sea from her extra weight, I see you are doing her with the 6in barbetts on her waist, cool if oyu have the brass barrels they will super nice.

Hi all, a wee bit of an update - I have managed to tidy up the hull, I used some small pieces of fine wet and dry - and gently rubbed over the areas where the dust specks were, did quite a good job, I have made a temp holding device in the shape of a lolly stick that spans under both edges of the turret ring its wedged one end and secured by a small clip the other - I will be able to hold it now without fear of it falling.
So tomorrow I should be able to give it a bit more paint in a couple of light layers - same with the turret.
I also decided to make the Chrome Dome on the commander a wee bit darker so I used a darker shade of Green.

lmagna got a reaction from popeye the sailor in McLaren M8B by CDW - Accurate Miniatures - 1:24 Scale
I didn't say that there was no effort on historical preservation. At least not these days.
Probably when they were first sold by McLaren to other racers they did what they needed to do to keep them legal and competitive with little thought for history, but eventually they were sold into the hands of collectors and amateur classic racers. By that time they were beginning to go up in value again. These people went about restoring the car back to one of it's original configurations probably documenting the whole process and establishing how much of the present car was still original based on the serial number. In the case of your photos, the car is possibly one of three cars manufactured in 1969. One of those cars was actually converted from a 1968 M8A so only two were M8Bs from the ground up. All three of those cars were converted to low wing M8Cs and Ds when the high wing was outlawed at the end of 1969. It gets a little confusing without the actual serial numbers and records but it is certain that all of the existing cars today went through this process and to return them to Historical Condition would require a reversal of that process. Each car has a log book that should include any and all owners, races, drivers, and modifications ever done on the car.
The same thing applies to even Chaparrals which Jim Hall never sold after the original Chaparral, (1s). The 1969 Chapparal 2F sits on one of the original 1965 Chaparral 2 chassis. The same goes for the 2D. The original of two 2Es was built onto the single aluminum 2C chassis, and one of the 2Es became the 2G. The Chaparral 2H and J car were unique one-of-a-kind, as was the Indy Chaparral 2K years later.
One set of cars that comes to mind that are an exception would be the cars raced by David Piper. He kept almost all of his green racing cars of the 60s and early 70s. So his green Ferrari 250 LM, as well as his Lola T70 MK 3B, Ferrari 365 P2 and Porsche 917K are all pretty much as he raced them in his driving carrier. I think I read somewhere he recently sold his 917K after rebuilding or replacing the engine that was destroyed in 2009 by a missed shift when being driven by freelance car journalist and race car driver Mark Hales. It ended up costing Hales $174,000 in repair and legal fees when Piper sued him and won. But that is another story as the saying goes.

Thanks Ken, all One persons fault - Mine, I rushed - didn't prepair and didn't consider that the old glove (the cheap throw away surgical type) would be no good to re-use after priming, also I did not have a propper hold of the Hull (yes foreget to mention it fell away from a plastc clip I was using - and fell to the floor onto slabs) nothing broke or fell off (told you those Challies were tough.
I was cursing and got one of those looks off the admiral as I am creating a history off the same disasters when it comes to me Rattle can painting, nothing I can do though - I have to use them if I want a smooth paint finish.
Planning for when I tidy up the hull and go out and re-spray - I need to rig up something I can trap between the turret opening in the hull that would allow me a way to hold it and rotate in my hand to spray all over it side to side - top to bottom, without dropping it this time.

Man, what a bummer. You have a workable repair plan, so that's OK. I've seen an outfit here in the States with these little conical sanders. Forget how fine they are.
