Kind of hard to put a like on your pose Craig when you are having to side track on the decal problems but the work so far is impressive as always.
Seeing the model come together and how the car looks from the inside out, it is interesting how much racing technology is there and how little street practice. I WANT one! 😭 I would at least get to drive it home before my wife killed me! But I am pretty certain I would die a happy man.

We have a major training facility here for the SkyCranes (CH-54) used for firefighting and they do heavy lift work also. They still look strange to me.. since they are -53 but without the fuselage. Like a giant spider flying through the air.

Pretty cool, airlifting that elephant. Mega tranquilizers there.
We shipped an F-4D from McGuire to a State Guard facility on the coast of New Jersey. My maintenance guys had to strip out almost everything to get it light enough to airlift. Basic empty weight was about 30K pounds. Engines were the big weight. From somewhere, they got a CH-54 Tarhe or Flying Crane to haul it over there. The Phantom was in a sling setup and the Tarhe took off to begin the hoist. They got hooked up and the lift began. The Phantom was wobbling around and some thought we'd lose it. As the Tarhe got forward speed, the Phantom "weather-vaned" and flew fine all the way to the Shore.

There was flight was a ( where a CH-53 carried an elephant. From Wikipedia: "One of the more different flights taken by the squadron occurred in 1968 when they participated in Operation Bahroom. This entailed delivering an elephant via helicopter from the airstrip at Chu Lai Air Base to the Special Forces camp at Tra Bong to work at a local saw mill." And if you're not believing, here's pics and two news stories on it.: This was before my time there in 'Nam but it was considered a legend.

The hull is finally planked. All went rather well, and I may need just a touch or two of putty:
A first coat of primer to better see the imperfections (if any....just kidding of course):
Then, some fine sanding, a touch of putty here and there and we can move to the upper part of the hull.

Thanks Mike!
Just today, I realized I have either lost or misplaced the dash decals for the Ferrari which include the instrument dials and such for the interior which I am working now to finish. Will have to wait a while to see if Tamiya USA can rescue me with a small replacement decal sheet. In the meantime, will work on everything outside the interior while I am waiting for a replacement.

Beautiful work Craig. The fit and detail of the parts looks amazing. Gotta love Tamiya kits!

Paint parts, let them dry. Mask painted parts, paint, let them dry. Dry fit. Rinse, lather, and repeat.
Good news is, the fit is spot on so far.

Keep at it, Chris. It's just like the wood or plastic side... the more you do, the better you get at it.

I know of one or two former combat pilots (Vietnam era) here and also several others (besides myself) that were crew members during that same time. I'm sure that there's others but have forgotten.

Glad to hear that you are getting better Patrick. Scary stuff.
Your added mini diorama goes to show something about ships that I have always found interesting.
Looking at them when they are sitting high and dry in drydock they look HUGE. Seeing them tied up alongside a dock they can look large, especially when they are square rigged with all of the tall masts and long yardarms. But seeing them, (Or being on board) while at sea with no land in sight, especially in rough weather even the largest ship looks all too tiny.

I will third it. I think I have read all of them over the years. That was even before I knew that they were by the same author.

Thanks, guys, I do appreciate the encouragement, but I'm being honest with my assessment. There are folks who are far better at working in this medium than I. I can only try to get better each time and try new things. Some kits go together better than others (kinda like wood kits in that respect). Some turn out great and hold up well under close scrutiny, others benefit from some thoughtful and judicious camera work. This one will fall into the latter category, methinks.

lmagna reacted to Roger Pellett in Hornblower, ? fiction
OK Steven, I’ll Yield to your research vs my off the cuff impressions. Besides I can’t check out the story anymore. I gave the books to a friend who in his mid 90’s was confined to an assisted living facility and wanted books to read. He died days short of his 100th birthday. I hope that he enjoyed the stories as much as I did.

lmagna reacted to iMustBeCrazy in Hornblower, ? fiction
I didn't mind it except they never had enough extras. Hornblower never seemed to have more than a dozen crew no matter what sized ship he had and 20-30 'Lobsters' marching off to invade France wasn't very convincing.

lmagna reacted to Sceatha in Hornblower, ? fiction
There has been a lot of comparison between the Aubrey and the Hornblower series. To me, being a Aubrey fan, it has to do a lot with what one happened to read first. Both are prime examples of literature and have a very immersive atmosphere, to the point that one feels a kind of sadness when they find out they've read the entire series and there is nothing more to read.
I feel that most people discover Aubrey or Hornblower during this bittersweet aftertaste period shortly after finishing the other one, while looking for something similar to read, and thus judge it unfavorably due the two writers' very different styles, which is, of course, unfair.
In any case, I agree with Steven that the Hornblower series, while enjoyable, fell very short of the books. Same goes for the Master and Commander movie which oversimplified the plot (especially Maturin's very interesting and complex character).

lmagna reacted to iMustBeCrazy in Hornblower, ? fiction
I've been binge reading recently, finished the Aubrey-Maturin series and up to Jesters Fortune (book 8.) in the Alan Lewrie series.
Alan Lewrie was basically blackmailed by his father into signing on as a midshipman, he never dropped below that rank. Aubrey however signed on as a mid but was 'set before the mast' for a time for smuggling a girl on board.
It was a morally questionable period of time. I mean, you could kill someone 'defending your honour' even if you didn't have any.
