Derek C reacted to Rustyj in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Rustyj - FINISHED - 1:48 Scale
Ok lets see here moving along I placed and the lower backstay and the fiddle block is from Syren Ship Modeling.
Oh wait a minute I seem to be forgetting something.
Oh yes my brain cramp that Bob was so observant and luckily pointed out. Thanks again Bob!
I removed all the lower shrouds and burton pendants. Of course I had to re-make all of them!
So I got a lot of additional practice on the Serve O Matic serving new shrouds and pendants.
So now the new set of shrouds have been re-installed correctly and I'm back on track.
That is until the next brain cramp occurs!

Derek C reacted to Blue Ensign in 18th Century English Longboat by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48 Scale
Thanks Al and Steve; always a good idea to re-do stuff Al if it bothers you, otherwise it will catch your eye and niggle away forever.
The thwarts are now fixed and some of the 'iron work' completed. Decided to take a short break from progressing the boat to consider.....
The question of oars
Chuck has fitted out the Longboat as single banked, but my preference is towards a double banked arrangement.
I mention this because it will have a direct bearing on the length of the oars.
The kit provided oars are 125mm in length which scale to an overall length of 19'6"
With a double banked arrangement the oars are obviously shorter as they don't have to cross the boat to the Thole on the opposite side.
There is a formula for this:
Divide the span by 2, and then add 2 to this number. The result is called the “inboard loom length” of the oar. Multiply the loom length by 25, and then divide that number by 7. The result is the proper oar length in inches.
Our Longboat model has a breadth of 51mm which scales to a breadth between the tholes (the span) of 96.37"; applying the formula the length of 179.24" is given (14.9') - at 1:48 scale = 94.8mm.
Using Steel I calculated the requirements for the sections of the oar.
Section L scale equiv Thickness
Handle 10" 5.29mm 0.85mm Ø
Loom 39" 20.63mm Thick: 1.45mm
Depth: 1.72mm
Body 84" 44.45mm
Blade 48" 25.40mm Breadth.
Inner end: 0.73mm
Outer end: 2.91mm
Thickness
Inner end: 1.20mm
outer end: 0.26mm
.
Square section 1.80mm Boxwood strip and 4.50mm x 1.25mm strip for the blades was used. A prototype is made up using these dimensions.
1904
The difference between the 'Single banked' oar length as per the kit, and the 'Double Banked' length as per the dimensions above can be seen.
1905
The oar length positioned on the boat looks good to my eye and I will make a set to those dimensions.
I don't think I will make a full set of 16 oars, maybe six for the purposes of display.

Not much progress but in the spirit of keeping the log up to date this is where I am. I really took my time bending and fitting the first plank. It's defenety bent in 3 dimensions and laid down with very little clamping needed. Maybe I'm getting a handle on it now but I'm sure taking my time. I'm going really slow. I hope I can get the other side to go as well.

I made the dead eyes and chain plates, not the best but if I never have to make dead eyes this small again it will be to soon I needed 9 total but I bet I made 20 and got 9 semi successful ones out of them . I started with a small square and cut out the general shape then finished them with sanding and filing.
Then I used a small brass nail " the same diameter of the nails I will use to mount them once there done "with the head cut of to form the 1.5 " long piece of 28 gauge wire to make my chain plates .
I then twisted th wire until the desired length and added the dead eyes using a drop of glue to secure them into the chain plates.
i also finished the gaff and applied the paint . I used white and black to accent pieces of the boat . Trying to leave as much of the natural teak showing . I plan on using a two part clear coat used on autos for the final finish
i am pretty pleased with the way she is looking for my first scratch build model

Derek C reacted to Tom E in US Brig Niagara by Tom E - Model Shipways - 1:64 Scale
Evening all,
Kind of a slow week, but by design. I wont say I've hit a road block, but a mere speed bump over which way to go.
When I have to decide a certain path over another, I go into a research mode.....eg, internet, other builds, and the like.
So instead of actually building I get to cleaning and re-organizing the Shipyard.
New Christmas lights for this years tree.......and the shipyard
I also tend to shop.
A trip to Michaels for some spare bass wood, and some blocks for extra bow and stern fillers.
The path I have been thinking about is how to handle the Main Rail.
In some other build's I've seen the main rail omitted until further in the build and use a square strip in its stead.
This is a large cross road in a ships build.
Being a newbie to all this and not looking to "bash" anything just yet, I'm going to stick with what comes in the kit.
Then I can move onto the gunports.
I took all of the pieces and did a rough draft and I feel more confident in using the supplied rails.
Honestly, they look pretty good.
There flat, no warps, and they align very well with the top of the bulkhead extensions.
I've seen builds where there wasn't enough length at the end, as is the case with these.
But nothing severe enough to change direction. Some wood filler and sanding will do the trick.
And they give me a good gauge of the overall curve/flow of the ship.

Few more details..
could not find clear evidence for the cleat on top of traveler rail (if it is indeed a traveler as there are several of those rails).
It seems though something is there and seen it on another similar craft... so will let it be
