rshousha got a reaction from John Ruy in Corsaro II by John Ruy - FINISHED - Corel - 1:24 Scale
Wow, this is great to see! Thank you for the note about the deck. Ever since I built that, I have wanted to create a proper king plank to make decking construction even more precise and realistic. I have now designed a cool system for large R/C models and I am looking forward to using it on a build of my own later this winter.

Decals and Strping…
Decals produced in MS Word and printed on ink jet water slide decal paper.
Bow markings and yellow striping.
Stern markings…
@rshousha Rick’s beautiful deck planking with its first coat of semi gloss poly. I’ll probably do another coat or two before I clear coat this hull.
Cheers 🍻

rshousha reacted to RossR in Where to start?
I may be in the minority on this forum, but my primary objective in building models is the enjoyment I get from the process and the satisfaction that I get having built the completed model. HMS Beagle was my first attempt at building a model ship. I accept that the sails are not to scale, but I like the look of the sails on the ship with the extra detail of the rigging that goes with them, and I enjoyed the process of adding them.
My second model will hopefully be better than my first, but it will still have out of scale sails provided by the manufacturer. I am not delusional, my motivation in building the model is just different than some. I think a beginner should feel perfectly fine using the sails that come with their kit if they are happy with the outcome. Someday I may tackle scratch building SilkSpan sails, but for now I will learn and improve other skills needed to build a model that I enjoy. I hope everyone gets the same satisfaction from the hobby that I do.

It’s pin-striping for rc’s fuel resistant @rcmdrvr It also formed to the tight curve on the stern.
You are correct Yves, I will be spraying on a Gloss Clear coat as soon as I get the yellow sheer stripe and Script completed.

Go with Caldercraft. If you want really good quality and clear instructions, then you want to look at Vanguard and Syren. The down side is they cost more, but you get the best of the best with them.

rshousha got a reaction from Seatoland in Euromodel Royal William parts to give away
Now that I have cleared out the gun-port hinges (one set left), I looked for something else to give away and I found these interesting Royal William parts. I think Euromdel had sent them to me to show me their quality when I started working with them several years ago.
I would basically like the cost of packing and shipping for these parts:
Canada - $50 CDN
US - $50 USD
Europe - $75 USD by surface
I suspect it's a little more if you are in Oz or NZ. If so, I will check the price if someone from there would like to get them.

I think it would be great fun if there was a section "finished by others". Perhaps it would encourage others to get partially-built models out of their closets and on to builders who are ready to go. I think it would create a lot of new friendships.
Cheers,
Rick

Welcome to my latest build log. Picked up this beautiful kit from my new friend out of Montreal. @rshousha Rick has had this model on the shelf for the past 10 + years and wanted to find someone who would take her to completion. I have accepted that challenge and so, here begins the rest of the story.
Here she is received into my home safe and undamaged via international shipment.
After a close inspection 🧐 I found that time had not been kind to her deck. My first order of business was to remove Rick’s wonderfully installed deck furnishings and fittings to restore and finish the decking.
I used Minwax color match filler to close the gaps and fine sand the finish.
I then cut in the scuppers and hause holes.
Prepared the hull for a few more coats of paint.
Drew the waterline and masked to paint from the waterline up.
And then waterline down…
Ready for some more sanding and then a few coats of clear ploy to give her a nice shine.
Rick,
Beautifully done hull and decking. 👍
We are on our way to completion. 🍻

Hi John,
Wow, this is so cool! My kids had a look at those early pictures I sent you and we figured the model was started closer to 2003 or 2004 than ten years ago! One of my daughters, who is about nine in the pictures, is now twenty-eight.
We're all happy see the model is in good hands!
Best Regards,
Rick

Great! It sure would be fun if more people pulled out their half-finished models and gave them away. There really is way too much stuff in our respective closets and workshops.

Gentlemen, in defence of the company, I buy a lot of kits from Jotika/Caldercraft. They are a great company and their kits are, in my opinion, a great value. It's a small company and can barely keep up with the demand for their current line-up of kits and other products. The weakness of the UK pound is giving them great leverage these days and they are shipping as fast as they can. Compounding the production pressures, issues with Brexit are adding a level of complexity and administrative effort.
All this means they are very busy with the kits they already produce. There is enough variety in their line-up to make most builders happy for several lifetimes and I suspect very few people have built all their kits.
I don't want to start a big discussion on this point. I just think we should encourage our favourite companies in this fragile industry and give them the benefit of the doubt. It is surprising to me to see that, on the one hand we want traditional companies to thrive, and then on the other we make disparaging remarks about those same companies.
If others are developing new kits, that's great news. I just don't see the need to make discouraging remarks about our friends.

Looking ahead a few stages....during the weeks of planking I've also been experimenting with 'ageing' the copper plates by immersing them in seawater.
Picture shows original, and 1,2 and 4 weeks of being submerged in a pot of seawater.
I did stir it every few days to ensure that the water got to all surfaces as, where plates lay across each other the water did not necessarily reach all surfaces equally. Pretty happy with the outcome and I think the plates need 4 weeks of preparation so I've currently got all the plates that will be used in a 2 litre bottle of seawater. Agitating (shaking it up a bit & rotating) it on a daily basis to ensure a more even exposure.
