  1. Hi UpstateNY I think your posts look great, one thing about this kit is that it is easy to change and add your own ideas.things are a little slow for me as i have developed glucoma and i am struggeling with my eye sight, not all that bad i am now recieving treatment so hope to resume soon. Regards Janet B
  2. Hi SGraham I am watching your build with great interest as i too have the Shenandoah kit i think your workmanship is really great and hope when i get round to building her i can do as well as you have although i am not looking to cutting all those scuppers. Happy times Janet B
  3. Hi UpstateNY At this rate you will soon catch me up,i think the amount of effort you have put into your ship is amazing. The ladders i tried a number of ways before i came across a way which for me turned out quite resonable,i have a Sherline Mill i also bought the vice and the indexed plate,so i fix the plate to the m/c table makeing sure it is square to the mill ,then the vice fits onto the indexable plate then i set the vice to the angle i require .Haveing set up i place a strip of wood about 3/4"wide and say 6" long then i just mill the side slots for the ladder sides all the way along the wood,to do the other ladder sides is just the same except you turn the vice in the index plate round the other way, i then just cut the wood to the size i require, for the slots i use milling cuters 0.5mm from www.mscdirect.co.uk Regards Janet B
  4. Hi UpstateNY Your treenaling looks very good,as a point i did all my drilling by hand i felt it was a bit more controlable. Regards Janet B
  5. Hi badger76 As regards the Amati master cut i have one which you can have for FREE i find it is a bit to flexable come and pick it up if you want it. I think if you can come round i could help you. with your deck, thats if you feel you need any.Ihave plenty wood if you like. My dearest regards Janet.
  6. Hi Jim&Donna. Further to suggestions i would love to own a very well made drilling machine,i bought a certain drill press still advertised it was a waste of money,it is made in USA I t was made of aly and was just an aluminium bed plate with 1/2" rods sticking up to support your Dremel or whatever you have it was very crudely made and i think the designer did not have much knowledge of what they were trying to sell.Anyway beware it is rubbish. Janet B (MSW)
  7. Hi badger. Nice to see your progress your build is coming along fine,i know how you have persevered and your doing a great job.Antway i was browsing members build logs and i came across a logof HMC Sherbourne by Dubz i think i will give you great insperation (or anyone)to see this build as he has included some great close -up pictures much better than you can see in the book. Regards Janet (
  8. Fantastic work hope to do the same one day, good luck with your build. janetB
  9. Hi Upstate NY Hope i got the name right, your build on Red Dragon looks good i shall be following your log with interest as i am building the same boat as you.I am however at a more advanced stage than you but of course you will be able to watch my build i have used differant woods than that supplied in the kit, any way it is a interesting build i hope you enjoy it. Regards Janet B
  10. Buetiful piece of work she looks strongly built, love to see her in full sail. Regards Janet B
  11. Hi Bender Great workmanship what a stunning model. Now i too have a kit Reale de France but my kit is made by Dusek and is to 1/72 scale that works out to 79cm length, i have not opened the box that was until i saw your build so i am curiose to see how the contents compere with the Corel kit.Well at the moment i do not have the skill but perhaps later, anyway well done. Regards janet (
  12. Hi Vivian. Love the detail your ship is really looking the part,i have to keep my finger nails shortto do detail work but it is all part of the fun. I find it hard to find all these details like you have added to your build,i like your working doors and i especially like the opening hatch, great work keep it up. My dearest regards Janet
  13. Hi Vivian I too struggled with my sails,i did not use the sailcloth in the kit i bought mine at a show, however i know Cornwall model model boats sell more suitable cloth.I made several sets before i was resonably satisfied,i studied a number of books until i found a way to make them.So first i washed the cloth in warm water to remove any starch and this also shrunk the cloth quite a bit, then i cut the pattern out leaving about 12mm all round tried the pattern on the mast to make any adjustments.I then stuck it to a window with tape i then stuck the cloth over top, then i traced the pattern on to the cloth, then using a weak mix of white glue i edged all round the pattern wherever i had to cut (i made my border only 3mm wide) when dry cut out using your modelling knife, then using a fairly hot iron i ironed the border down, got out my sewing m/c and just sewed all around the border, the sailcloth seams i just sewed on.Obviosly this is not the way sail- maker would but the sails look reasionable but i think adding sails to a Chinese Junk is justified. Hope this is of help Vivian. Regards Janet menu.pdf
  14. Hi Frank First i must apolagize for delay my health is not so good.I have replaced most of the wood on the detail work on the deck, the cap rails are flexible Beech i used it because the rail has a three way twist as it rises towards the bow which i used a soldering iron and a lot of patience i decided to pin it,the two cabin doors are mahogany the frame is stained lemon wood again bent round round with soldering iron, the stick on metal wondows where discarded and i replaced them with frames i made from Boxwood. Gunports through the bulwarkes are painted red the surrounds are Boxwood painted gold. Kindest regards Janet
  15. Hi Matt Like your sails,i have just completed my sails for my Red Dragon Chinese junk it has taken me three attemps (thats three sets of sails) nine in all i made before i got one set i liked. It is difficult to get info on junks in the kit it does not show the bolt rope but i have decided to add the bolt rope as i think there would be one.love your workmanship. Dearesr regards janet B
  16. Thanks to everyone for your very kind comments,as i am very disabled it does take me considerable time to build,so i hope to post pictures in the future. I am at the moment attempting to make the sails for my Red Dragon of course i am on home territory here, it seems to be dificult to find any infomation as to how they are made eg: which way do the panels run and also which side of the sail bamboo strechers go, ideas would be most welcome. Bye to all Janet B
  17. Hi As regards driling tiny blocks, make a small jig out of four pieces of wood glue them all together so you have a hole the same size of the blocks down the middle, glue a stop in the hole the depth of the block make a lid to fit on top of the jig find a brass tube inside diameter of the drill and glue it through the top block and make sure it is dead centre of the hole where the block fits, very lightly tack it on top then drill a hole each side going through the block and into the jig fit two dowls then take the top block off put in your block put the top block in place and insert the dowls gently drill into your block. You would need to add a small hole underneath to eject the block. Hope it works Janet B
  18. Hi everyone. Thank you all for your most kind comments about my Red Dragon,i gave a lot of thought about the guns i thougt it a little strange that they were fixed on to the deck,it bothered me so much i started to make them on trucks although i felt a little uneasy,it was then i spotted the sketch of the guns being loaded outboard that is to say one of the gun crew climbed over the gun rail sat astride the barrel and proceed to load, a little precariose in the heat of battle. So that is what i settled for, has anyone any further thoughts on this i would be intrested on any details. The ship incorperates some details may-be not found on Junks but i used the kit to practise my workmanship so i must appologise if some parts are not true to the type. bye for now, Janet.
  19. Hi Vivian. I liked your rigging, did you have any problems i am just about to start on mine. Are you making sails for her yet, i bought some Eygption sailcloth at Blackpool model boat show here in England i intend to use it for my Red Dragon. Your build looks a lot differant to mine it is very interesting to compare our builds, please let see pictures of the sails i look forward to seeing more of you lovely looking model. My very best wishes. Janet.
  20. Hi Chris L Bren I too am a kit basher, when i buy a kit it has saved me time i can just open the box and more or less start building.Of course it is not quite as simple as that as i try to add more details and for a lot of them the fruit woods are ideal as i like to use as little paint as posssible, however at my age i feel i do not have the time to build from scratch illness forces me to spend valuable time in hospital.Of course if i had time on my side then love to eventually scratch build and build entirly from keel up but time is not on my side. Regards Janet (
  21. Dandyfunk. I have followed your build with interest what a great job you have made. Do you brush paint or spray, i too have this kit not sure when i will start Your pictures have provided me with insperation and will refer to them when i start my build. My very best regards. janet (
  22. I have posted further pictures of my Red Dragon build as you can see i have added arnement. The guns took me five attempts untill i was satisfied, iI made up blanks for all of the sides spot glued them together and machined them all in one go, they all came out exactly the same i was quite pleased with the results. I made a simple jig for the trunnion clamps all of the guns are fitted with wedges i have not added any tackle to date i am considering whether too or not. hope you find my build of interest. Kindest regards to all janet (bode)
  23. Hi Adam. I too have Harriet Lane waiting in my stock, i have been watching a number of posts. I remember reading some where that with solid hull models they were cutting the bulwarks off so you are left with just the hull up to deck level then you go round the hull and cut into the side of hull down from the deck and about a quarter of an inch so you are left with a ledge the thickness of the bulwark side, stern wise you could plank with the wood vertical. You could then put dummy formers across the deck the width of were you cut away the bulwarks you could plank the bulwarks using the dummy formers to keep the shape, obviously you need to wax on the edge of the dummy formers. I would like to know anyones thoughts of this method. Janet B
  24. To all of you who made such nice comments about my model i truly thank you. The Red Dragon is my first model in a sense because i bought one Red Dragon from Antics it was the only wooden kit they sold, so when home and atacked the kit i got as far as completing just the hull,i had just joined MSW SO When i compared my workmanship to some of models in the gallery i realised my model was a bit of a mess so i put it in the trash bin the refuse collecter picked it up and put it in his cab.I Went back to Antics to see if they had anything i could buy and there on the shelf was another Red Dragon kit so now i had bought severel books the result is as you can now see. Regards to all Janet B
