    Hi Nigel

Just catching up on your great build, she sure is a very special build with so very much detail that I love so very much,                                                              ENJOY

while I was messing around with the Harbor build,  I thought I'd flesh out another aspect of this build.   I was thinking about the ice maker.   first I thought of a grill along the bottom.......and two doors above it.

then I thought about an access panel on the side.

it now needs paint and brass detail......along with some fins in the grill,  but this is how it will look.

I think I bagged it....   Fiddly work at best.  I made some templates, changed them, cut some wood, fed the scrap box  Then I got what I wanted.   Since this is hidden by quarter galleries, I'll fair it in and tweak as needed before planking. The interior will need minimal as some is hidden by the clamps, deck beams and deck.   The interior will get planked and probably some trim around the doorways with some nice doors.

It would appear that the French played the "misdirection" game as well as the Brits.  On the Brits Roebuck class, there's two rows of stern windows so that when seen by ship coming from astern it would appear bigger than it is.   On Licorne,  the top of the stern windows are also the beam for the quarterdeck.  From inside, the bottom of the lights are about chest high.  It gives the appearance when coming astern that the ship is taller than she really is and from a distance it could be mistaken for an 18 pdr frigate (my conjuncture).  I think the galleries were designed with the same "look" in mind.

Here's some more pics of her rear, and I'm off to the next bit which will either be setting up the deadlights or shaping the taffrail..

so,  here is what I'm looking at Sjors.    in checking out the capping rails for the Boulogne,  I took them and dry fitted them on the Jingle Belle.  now I wish I had a picture of the parts panel......you could see how efficient they were in utilizing most of the panel blank,  when they laser cut the parts.   some of them aren't so good.......quite a bit of cast off after the parts are punched out,  which is good in the event that you'd need to make another part.  perhaps I can do that later,  when I cut the parts out.  so here is the Jingle Belle with the rails,

during my search for the rails,  I happened on the box I had found in the cellar.   this is full of eyelets,  in about several different sizes and colors.

I started to separate them.......I set up several medicine pill bottles to put them in.  I had to stop though,  because it became to monotonous.  this will take time.

these can be used a number of ways........but the two best aspects for them are hawse holes and portholes.   they can also be used for sheave holes as well,  if one can be satisfied with them being totally round.   when I first found this box,  a future project came to mind.   I have some parts,  that I came by a while ago........there is a story but it's kinda long,  and I'm sure you don't want to hear it.

these are parts that belong to a Billing's Danmark kit.  I got the main part of the keel,  the bulwark panels {2} and the lower panels {2}.  I also got some of the fitting parts,  brass rods,  and a block of balsa {which I already used}.   to look at the lower sections,  these eyelets would be perfect to insert in the holes to dress them up.

I have the plans for the Danmark as well.  My plan is to take the parts diagrams and have them blown up 1:1 to the model,  later to be transferred to wood.......but just the hull parts,  since.....who knows,  it might not even be the Danmark when I'm done.  the reason to show you this.......I've been wanting to, and the face that I was looking at them when I was talking to the admiral about the cap rails.   I need to get the wood to make them,  and she made the suggestion that I use the bulwark panels to make them
true.....these panels are of the thickness I need.   but,  in checking them out,  due to the laser cut holes,  it would be a terrible waste of wood to try and cut them out.   so,  it's errand time.......I will take the admiral with me.....perhaps we will do some more scavenger hunting.   I am glad to finally be able to show this to you.   it's another project that I have in mind,  and when I'm ready to roll it out........your surely to be the first to know!   I'll try and cook up some meaningful progress when I get back

I finished the framing on the front wall.   now the objective here will be to get the wall sheeted and the side rails on.

after sheeting the port side lower portion,  the side rail was installed.

then it was to continue sheeting the wall with the bits and pieces I have lying around.

the starboard lower portion was put in place.

then the starboard side rail was added.

outside of the trimming around the door and windows,  the wall is done.

better late than never........I had made some progress a couple of days ago,  and I wanted to add more before I showed it to you.   I finished sanding the first set of bow rails,  and installed them on the Jingle Belle.

I made up a pair of side rails for her,  but I can't do them at this time.   I need to get the front wall of the warming room framed and sheeted.   I still need to frame in the windows {they will be doubles},  and the door tread is already in place.

they will be double doors.   I have done more.......I'll try to get them up for you soon.   tomorrow I need to get a new keyboard and mouse........everything seems to be breaking down all at once!

After 2 weeks vacation I have to go to work again.....
The little free time that I had I have done something......
Deck furniture on the lower gun deck is placed like:
    Gratings, Stove, Ladders and beatings.
And when i was waiting for some glue to dry, I have painted the windows for the transom and the quarter gallery's.
And because the glue was not dry yet, I have place them in the frames.
And because it's early dark, not the best pictures.
I wanted to do it now otherwise you have to wait till wednesday or thursday......

    Hi Mates,

Thanks for your nice comments, likes and just looking in- still and always much appreciated.

Continuing with the cannon door assemblies and dummy cannon installations it struck me that I really wanted to also add upper and lower “carriages” look.

I looked at the positioned (but not yet fixed into place) first door, and its cannon - wanted to do something about the missing carriages (pic 3).

So now I needed to simulate these bits.

I played around with some ideas (pic 4), the first two carriages, left to right, did not drop down enough into the dummy opening (pic 5).

Added a longer leading edge vertical strip, looked better (pics 6 & 7)

    -------------------------

I was going to use the Proxxon MF70 and cut a groove into a long piece of timber, but I still would have had the leading edge visual problem, and I imagined that if I tried cutting tiny little slivers of “U” shaped wood, I would loose most to breakage. My fear of the unknown J

So the pics were my solution. Made also sure that the wood framings were of the same diameter as the weather deck installs (pic 9)

I’m comfortable with this. These will get “lost” when one looks at the finished ship, but for me it adds a level of detail to the dummy openings that seem to work. Labor intensive, for sure. Each dummy has 5 pieces X 50 Hmmm that’s another 250 questionable parts added to this kit. Having fun-no rush on my part…

PS: You might note pics 2,5 & 8 (carriage bit in place) the very tip of the pull open rope for the door is a bit darker colored. That is GS Hypo at work. Thumb and forefingers bit of glue makes the rope tips hard and straight- so easy to push into its hole after positioning the doors. Here I actually thought ahead, must be some foresight going on (;-)

    Regards,

    Michael

    Let the second planking begin!

So far done completely with PVA glue and no clamps, just holding each plank in position until the CVA takes enough set to hold it.  We'll see how far along I get with this system.

For the stern, I've only gotten two of the planks wrapped to the transom so far, and I've used water and heat to get them into shape prior to gluing.  Hopefully will be able to continue to get the shape of the planks at the stern very close to shape before placing.  If not I'll likely have to resort to clamps at some point.

So I decided that good is good enough, and I'm tired of painting black layers.  So, I decided tonight would be the night for the 'big reveal'.  How well did my masking work?  Was all of this a huge waste of time because the black bled all over the yellow ochre?  (insert drum roll here)

I can live with this.  This is prior to buffing (not fully dry on the final coat of black) and adding a couple layers of clear poly.  Needs a bit of touch up here and there, especially in the bottom and top of the gun ports, but certainly a paint job I can live with for my first run at wood painting.

As far as colors go, I painted 4 different color strips (3 different blues and a green) and laid them up against the hull to eyeball, and while the blue certainly adds a nice splash of color, I think I'm going to be different from every other AVS build I've seen, and leave the sheer strake black.  In the instruction manual, painting the sheer strake blue, red, or green is 'optional', and I'm kind of fond of the black right now.

Tomorrow I can put the taffrail on, and then apply a couple coats of poly to protect the paint, then it's time to start the 2nd planking of the hull!

JoTika specified double planking, however after the first planking, I couldn't see the advantage in repeating the procedure.  The only concern seemed to be damaging the planking when removing the bulkheads.  However, with fast C/A applied between each row of planks, the hull was firm enough  to sustain no damage.

I did a trial run with Dap Plastic wood and Minwax Wood Filler. The Plastic Wood dried very quickly and required more sanding, while the Minwax was easier to apply and sanded more easily.

Ribs added using 0.5mm x 1.5mm styrene strips.

An outside plank (styrene) added to support cutting the oar locks.  The upper plank saturated with fast C/A to prevent splitting.

With template for deck planking. Also an inside reinforcement for the base of the oarlocks.

After a little work on the computer, I'll finish the launch.  Thumbnail is the third photo. Cheers, Gil

Hi everyone! There's a lot on my plate at the moment, so I haven't had time to be as active as I'd like lately.

I have finished the skankläder (war cloth?) for the tops. I then started with the tackles. I was surprised how much work they where. First I reshaped all the block to make them more like the real ones. Then I drilled the holes slightly bigger to fit the ropes I wanted. After that I made the hooks connecting them to the channels before putting the tackles in place.

    Greetings all
Well things are going pretty well at the moment, and the first planking is finished and sanded smooth, and I am pleased with way it has turned out. I was surprised how little filler I needed to use. I will now continue planking to all the upper areas, and sort out the underside of the transom. I am wondering if I should plank the sides of the keel at this stage, or if it is even necessary to add a first planking. Ok that's me for now, here's a few photos. Regards DAVID

Good evening, one and all.  Have been working on the ECB with some nice progress.

First, a full overhead view of current status.

What, you may ask, are those things hanging over the rails?  Well, mister man, them be home built nets for the hold.

Yep, the Admiral has been busily making fish nets for the ECB.

But wait, there's more!  We can't have the crew shivering on the cold cabin - so knitted using common pins as the knitting needles, we have a scale blanket for the crew.

I am still working on the stove - using the Fatsco Tiny Tot Stove as a model, it is made of a dowel cut to scale (about 18 inches tall, 13 inches in diameter).  The legs are just toothpicks.  Will be adding some sand into the base and a cooktop before running the stovepie to the overhead.

Have been working on color scheme - think I will go back to a grey for the outside of the wet well - the brown just doesn't feel right.  I like the bottom red on the interior.  Will leave it partially unpainted as a repair underway.

I will be keeping this section unplanked.  I will also be leaving off some deck planks - probably around the wet well and also at the cabin.  Not quite sure yet.

I also have finished the bulkhead between the cabin and the hold.  The hold side will be painted in the same way as the hold so it looks a tad weathered and worn.  The cabin side will be a dirty white - backs up to the coal stove, so it would tend to get a bit mucky.  I still need to do some more painting and paneling for the cabin before I start installing the deck framing.  The forward hold is nearly finished, just need to decide what is going to be in there and anchor it in place.

Appreciate any suggestions or ideas on how to make it look better - still a long road to travel with this one and am enjoying the ride!
