Great...!!!   I'm glad the glue product(s) worked out for you...!!!  It's funny how some of our best (??) tools & techniques are discovered by accident, as the Plastruct products were for me...!!!!   Thanks for the 'color guides' on the mast rings...I think I'm going to go with the 'gun metal gray' (which is almost a 'blue') on the 'with sails' version, if only for the contrast 'effect'... & any pics anyone has would be most appreciated...!!! Thanks Guys !!! Kim

I found a couple of early Baugean engravings. He was in the Mediterranean area for the Java and Guierere fights and he tends to emphasize the wooldings on the masts. I have included a sample below.

Colors.....a memorable experience for an old sailor to participate and witness aboard this mighty vessel as so many noble sailors and patriots have done in the past.....

Kim, the current paint configuration for the mast rings is white, the same as the mast itself.  I did mine in black for contrast, and I had seen some models showing this.  I just did mine that way, with no historical decisions.  I have pictures if needed.

Yeah, I enjoyed my time there. I lived in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, on the Pacific side near Nicaragua. Great people, but they believe all Americans have a money press, and the thievery was pretty rampant. I had a bar and restaurant there for a while. Great place to visit, but not to be in business. The cost of living is very high. I could buy Imperial Beer (the National Beer) in Houston, cheaper than I could buy it wholesale in CR.

Hi guys, thanks you all for warm words!
Nearly nothing time to work at the model, so only a small update. The chains are now completted.

The next task is the bulkheads of cabins, so here the doors under construction. The door windows are done the same way as at the stern, but here I have glued wood strips at both sides of plastic sheet. The images show the making step by step.

Very nice, I hadn't thought of something like this method. I'll have to make a mental note to look back when I get into these areas. Thanks for the pictures.

    Hi Jason,
Yes it is a bizarre set up. I had seen a very bad photo of that before visiting the ship. I had also been studying the plans before my trip, and it did not show very well in the plans, so this wasw an area I have not done yet on my build, holding off until I could see it in person. Of course, this wasn't restored yet, but I found this drawing taped to the bulkhead next to the tiller and photographed it. This is also true of the windlass area, and I found the area on one of the models on display that showed this very well and I now have good pictures of this area too.

Well, I am currently in Virgina Beach, Va. First time I have been here in 41 years (since I was separated from the Navy in 72). We're staying directly across from Oceana NAS, and the F-18's have been flying over us all day....brings back many memories, since I was stationed here with the JFK at NOB, Norfolk. We used to camp out here in tents when we had free time from the ship. Now my Admiral understands why I'm as deaf as I am.....loud fighter jets with no ear protection...she gets the picture...lol. Pictures following soon. Have to pay for internet by the day here, so pictures might come later on.

this is a 1/2" - 1'0" scale model.....in the Collections & Research building.  All of the others are in a vault with large steel sliding doors and just stacked up in rows and available only for research and not open to the general public without an appointment and an escort.

That cut out is for a window with simulated frames.  It was my homage to David Antscherl after being inspired by his Resolution model.  This one is actually done in all basswood.

Here are some images of the prototype under construction.

Fairing of the hull bulkheads has been completed.  I am happy to report that the safety timbers installed on the bulkhead 'horns' served me well and no pieces were broken during the sawdust festival.

The safety timbers have been removed and reserved for possible future use.

I will now begin to construct the 'shadow box' on the starboard side which will serve to show the exposed 'frames'.  This next photos shows the laser cut shadow box pieces and 20 identical 'frames', 10 of which have been doubled up.  The interior of the box will be painted black.

The laser burn on the side of the frames to be exposed shall be removed in a mini-fairing operation after they are installed (they are cut over sized).

You're welcome Augie. There will be more to follow, and I will be posting a separate set of pictures of my journey in the Museums and other ships section of the forum soon. Too time consuming right now, but that way other people can view them than just the ones following my log. Just time for a couple of more, then I have to hook up and head to Gettysburg, Pa. today. these were in the Collections and Research building, which is a fascinating place all by itself.

Whalers are great subjects with interesting fittings and I like the look of your Morgan John, a fine job on the copper tape. I imagine as hard worked ships they are a good candidate for a bit of weathering if you choose to go down that route.

    Cheers,
