I came across this article on the HMS Implacable a 74 gun ship. I follow WoodenBoat on FB and this is how i came to know about it, thought I would share. There are several you tube videos you can watch if you search.

I was on a drafting table for about 6 years as a die designer in the forging industry then switched over to a 2D program called ANVIL 1000; it's still around but a little pricy. Then we migrated to SolidWorks which I prefer to use. Each one of these programs has a learning curve but it is easier to grasp the fundamentals and get up to a production level if you have previous drawing board experience. (IMHO)

I found the best way to learn SketchUp was to start modeling some of my old high school vocational projects . Simple geometric shapes at first then gradually working into something more advanced. Even if you're just going to trace over an existing design, it still helps to have a good knowledge of the basic tools and what you can do with them under your belt.

If you start out with "lofty" ideas (no pun intended), your CAD program could end up in the closet along with your model ship. Like anything else it takes practice, practice, practice.

Some examples of SketchUp work I have done in addition to what I have posted already.

For those of you curious about how an actual rudder was constructed, our resident 3D guru, Denis, has prepared these renderings for our Swan class model. These tabled joints would be very difficult to emulate on model (please give it a go Mark!) and virtually impossible to see unless you could actually visualize both sides of the rudder at the same time. When completed our 3D Swan class ship will offer a more complete (and historically accurate) treatise on contemporary ship building than the AOS series.

    I am back.
Having successfully bevelled a futtock chock joint.
What a painful process it was for me to accomplish.
I pray I've got it going the proper way.

I had these sitting in my arsenal on cannon carriages. They were handed down to me so I hand them off to you. I don't recall the source but perhaps there is some information you can use.

Nice renders. The hand over hand for pulling rope doesn't seem quite right.

    Hi,
here some updates from my lifetime project after a longer break. I am revisting it dramatically at the moment. My crew got some spectacular new members. It is not perfect and amateurish but some hard challenges could be solved.
    More to come...

This goes into the right direction ...

I need some more of them:

The latest effort. Made me almost crazy ...

    This is an easy one.

He will have his place on a yard.

    Pulling ...

The best imho out of this group ...

This was the second i made ...

    Again on the yard.

This is all for the moment.

I would recommend Onshape it's free or you can pay either way the full use of the software is at your disposal. It's also cloud based which means a group collaboration is possible. Its a lot like SW but different to. There is no software to down load and it runs on pc, Mac, and various mobile devices. I'm using it now to design a 74 gun ship based mostly on Steel's work but other resources as well.

Designing a ship of this complexity from scratch has been a challenge but also rewarding. I work on it during evenings, weekends and when the spirit moves me, not necessarily in that order. That being said, it's been a couple years in the making and I'm not done. A couple screen shots is below..  I have post on the forum called "scantling questions" which documents my progress.

    So let me introduce myself
CPO and Bosun (Bos'n or Boatswain), 141 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Bellerophon of Welland, Ontario (1972).
I shrunk my self to 5'-6" from my present 5'-10-1/2"
(glued to a thin piece of wood and that glued to a tiny hex nut to keep me upright)

I'll be adding my father (Able Seaman RCNVR 1939-1945) and my grandfather (Able Seaman NRNR 1914-1918) to the crew.
If I find one of my wife (Navy League Wrenette Corps Patrician of Welland) in uniform she will be signed aboard also... women allowed.
The only criteria for family to join is they must be in naval uniform.

I won't likely post again until I get back to at least where I was before I tore frames off.
    take care till then.

I also tried Sketchup for drawing ship plans but found it lacking in many areas as was mentioned lack of splines and problems with circles, bevels and few other things. I have a post with my efforts somewhere on forum; at first it seems easy, feasible and I progressed up to a certain point and began to encounter difficulty do to a lack of tools. Im not new to 3D as I've been a Solidworks user for a long time.  I agree with Alex, I don't think Sketchup is well suited for drawing up plans. I've been recommending Onshape which is free for 3D modeling. It's a lot like SW so the learning curve was small. Search for a post called scantling questions.

I'm a big fan of Sketchup. However it might prove cumbersome when it comes to ship design. I know it can be done but I have a feeling it's not the best tool for this. If you ask me, I find it unacceptable to NOT have a built in splines engine after all these years. The extensions you find are kind of old and, as I struggled with them a few time ago, buggy (unless they've fixed some issues in the meantime).

You don't need only the 2D tools to draft a plan. You also need surfacing smoothing possibilities, spline curvature analysis and so on. I'm using Sketchup for every project, but when I tried drafting a ship plan I went for something else.

Check your local high school or middle school and see if they have any vocational classes in drafting or machine shop. The likely will have some old books, better yet check your local library. Depending on your software there are probably oodles of YouTube videos to help you get started.  You have a lofty goal and drawing plans from scratch isn't for the faint of heart.  Tracing over an existing set of plans might be better as you'll have something to work from and learn a long way what will be expected of you when drawing from scratch.

I could tell you Wayne...but then I'd have to kill you! Seriously, our renderings are being done by a very talented individual in Europe. I have no idea what software or computer he uses and wouldn't understand even if he told me. But I honestly can't tell whether the photo below is his rendering or my model.
