The middle wale is also 'anchor stock'. It's taken me 3 attempts to get the positioning of the wales correct. Jotika plans are inaccurate, so I'm now going by Magowan & Makay. -

I rejected Billings model for that reason. I'm now building Jotika's model & am doing the lower (main) wale in anchor stock, which I'm producing on my MF70 mill. -

I agree the instructions are v.good, but as I said the plans leave much to be desired. I left my build alone for several months, before finding Jean Boudriot's vols 1,2,3 of 'The French 74 Gun Ship' (French version), then carried on the build to his 'spec'. A lot of scratch building, discarding the worse kit parts. I completed her at the end of October (2024). I'm now building Jokita's HMS Victory. The last two pics are (obviously) Victory.

For future use, try Tamira masking tape, which I've used with great results, especially on model railroad rolling stock in the past. IMHO auto-shop tape is too thick & blue tape does not stick to itself, as for green (Frog Tape), that's a load of 'carp'.

Sorry, Chris, I can't agree on the manual being excellent. I bought my kit pre-owned in 2020 (laser cut), & have found many mistakes on the drawings, for instance French 74s had the jib off-set to starboard of the bowsprit, Mantua have it to port. I discarded the side galleries & stern & scratch built it all. The rigging drawing is terrible, with the yards drawn at 90* to the masts, making it almost impossible to follow. The preventer stays have been omitted. I've resorted to using Petterson's book & the plans from OcCre's Montanes, supplemented by J Boudriot's vol 3 Le Vasseau de 74 Canons.

Probably too late now, but I've just started Amati's Niña, & saw this discussion, so re-read the drawings & instructions - no need to slot deck because the planking is done first, THEN the deck is fitted after cutting of the bulkhead tips.

Hi Kevin, I've at the stage of figuring out the stern galleries, & like you, have found the supplied etchings on 1mm ply tobe utter c--p. I tried your way, but I reckon mine is a much older kit (bought pre-owned). No way could I get a decent paint finish. After three times sanding back & painting it hit the bin. I milled a piece of pear wood to 1.5mm & scratch built the panel to my own design using walnut strip, 1mm dia. & square, 0.75mm dia. brass, & walnut columns. Next step is to redo the side galleries.

I'm building the same kit with plastic bits which I intend to paint black. I also made wooden anchor stocks & a solid wood rudder (the ply was very weak & broke when sanding.

Please put a handle on that file.! As an apprentice it was one of the first things we where taught - ALWAYS fit a handle, if the file digs in the tang is sure to stab the palm of your hand!

I've just found out that it is a bag of walnut stain granules for the deck. Deck planks aren't dark, so will be put to other use. I'm thinking of trying to replace some of the transom details with brass such as dummy brass columns over the etched ones. The kit etched transom parts look more like a 3-D mural to me, but I've been spoilt with the details of Montañés! No stern lanterns in the kit,so I've ordered some with the intent of installing LEDs. Hi Keven, I just laid the keel yesterday of my Le Superbe. In my kit I found a small baggy of black powder (I know it's not gunpowder for the guns😃!) to which, so far, I have not found any reference, any idea ? is it 'ready mix' for a stain? This will be my 4th build, having just completed Occre's Montañés, previously USS Connie (Mantua) & Blue Shadow (Mamoli). I'll be following your build. Regards Stuart All suggestions as to what the black 'stuff' is ill be appreciated!
