  1. I installed a fifth post and installed the carling and ledges. I have made all the planks for the lower deck ( all 120 mm long ) and have decided to use the 1,3,5,2,4 pattern for the decking. Below are a few pictures of how I'm adding the black 100 lb. weight paper to the edges of my planks in order to simulate the caulking between the planking. I think it will work out okay. Will update with some more pictures once I start laying a few boards. I have also made and stained the waterway boards and have installed them.
  2. Wow. Thanks for the compliment Antony. I guess I will carry on with the build, seeing that a few people like the way it looks, me too in some ways. I like the rough look of ship models also. Nothing built way back when was ever perfect either I figure. At one point I was ready to scrap it and start all over, thinking that it didn't look like all the other great builds that I have viewed. But now I know that if I like it and I have done my best to build it, then it too is a great build. I believe your build will be great also.
  3. Thanks Ben Your right. As long as I learn from my mistakes, and there have been many. So, I'm learning a lot.
  4. Daniel and Pete Thank you for your kinds words. It does have a distinctive look about it, I agree. Maybe it will turn out okay in the end. Time will tell.
  5. It's been awhile since my last post, but I have been doing a couple of changes on my build. I decided that since this is my first and experimental build, I would change the look a bit. So, the following pictures will explain themselves. I'm learning a lot about how not to do things and will carry those over to my next build. This build is not very good in my opinion, and I hope to do a lot better on the next one. But hey, I'm learning as I go, and that's one of the main things. Have the hanging knees installed. They are all different sizes etc. Bad job, but I guess they look okay for this deck. Sanded the planking again and decided to stain some planks. I like the look but oh man what a job that was. Lesson learned - stain the wood first and use the proper wood before you install it. Use the proper wood next time. <<<< DO NOT TRY TO STAIN AFTERWARDS>>>> I'm learning that if I have the proper tools in the first place, I would have had a way better build. The joints would have been better and the build could have been quicker. Oh well, live and learn.
  6. Can someone tell me what the deck planking pattern is for the Triton x-section. I see some have used the two pattern on their models. I guess it's up to me in the end, but I was wondering what the original pattern was.
  7. Nice looking rope Paddy. I like the color of the Burnt Umber. But, maybe just a touch lighter.
  8. NIce looking square Snowmans. It will come in handy, I'm sure. I've been looking for one myself, maybe I should make one also.
  9. Thanks for the kind words. Grant I hope the gun deck will be better too. Yes, I will be planking the whole deck. I know that the hanging knees are not in yet, but, will put them in as soon as I cut and shape them. Will be a little while, but I did not forget about them. Russ I should have listened to you for sure. Live and learn. I'm a 24/7 guy. Pete You do a far better build than I do. Green is a nice color, it would have matched the color of the faces on the Tars when they were in rough seas. Anyway, I have decided to do a couple of other changes to my build, seeing that this will be my experimental build. Will post them when I'm finished.
  10. Since my last post I have been working my way along the lower deck. Boy, I should have listened to Russ and cut all of the notches before mounting the beams. Well, I didn't and I tell you I had so much trouble cutting the notches for the carlings and ledges that I will never do it again that way. I had the beams in place and glued in, and I cut each notch with an Exacto knife. The notches had very bad gaps so I filled them in with my Triton sawdust and glue combination. Looks bad. Although I am a little embarrassed about the sloppiness of my notches and my broken knees, I will post these pictures in order to show future model ship builders, the way not to do it. I must keep telling myself that this is my first build and that I am no expert at all. This is just a learning process that I am going through at this stage. The next build will be better and the next one after that will be better. I am learning as I go and by posting my pictures of the faults that I have made with this build, will someday help others and will teach me of better ways to approach certain items of each build. So anyway, here are some pictures. Please do point out the mistakes to me so that I will know better next time. Thanks
  11. Hi Pete I like your clamps. I with Rusty, I like the Natural look also. Nice job on the limber boards too.
  12. They didn't just turn out ok, they turned out great. Very nice work Snowmans.
  13. Marius Your build is looking great. I like your choice of the South African Yellowwood for the planking, it looks very good. When I did my lower deck beams, I used Oak and soaked them in a bucket of hot water for over an hour and then let them dry for a couple of days. It worked out good for me. It held the camber nicely. Here, where I live, we have a store called the "Dollar Store". That's where I go to buy by Exacto blades. El cheapo blades. Assorted blades and three handles all for a dollar. They work great and if they break, oh well, I just go and buy another set. Just thought I would mention it.
  14. 42rocker Hope you do find some saw time soon. I don't have to cut any lawns anymore as I live in a townhouse complex and just pay lots of money for someone else to do it. So, yes, i guess I do have a little more time to build then you do. Good luck with finding some spare time.
  15. Wow 42Rocker, you sure are busy. Hope that you are feeling better now and can find some time to work on your build soon. I'm looking forward to seeing your frames. Hope you post some pictures soon. Take care.
  16. Thanks Grant for posting your rope walk. Can I place an order now? Just kidding, it looks great. I must file this for future use. Thanks again.
