cog got a reaction from SHIPSCAT in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
So far I've invested approximately 4 hours over the last few days in this build. I started with the main turrets ... still going on turret number 1
1st clean up the plastic base
2nd add the brass (1 piece of railing has not yet been glued, 2 pieces more to add)
All the brass on top, and at the fore, are not in the Pontos set. So far it is just FlyHawk PE

cog got a reaction from SHIPSCAT in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
Finally started on this big plastic tub. Besides the invisible PE from Tamiya - bring x-ray goggles - I've got both the Pontos detail up set advanced , and the FlyHawk. The latter is quite impressive. No pictures from the Pontos PE. I forgot to take pictures, and on top of that I just dropped my coolpix on the ground, lens first. It seems I might just as well buy a a new one, as repairs will cost me about the same
The Flyhawk had the Nagato booklet, but they sent me a replacement. It seems it is easier to find what parts go where with the proper booklet
Sister ship is built by Greg IJN Yamato 1:350
This will be a slow (agonising) build. I've decided to start with all the small parts like guns and turrets to get some dexterity with the PE. This is worse than the stripdown Fokker DR1 I build from Eduard

Clinker built is not easy, even at a larger scale

Nenad, may be an idea to laminate the ribs. The glue will make the ribs sturdier/more sturdy, which in turn will help to keep the form of the boat ...

Next I cut some tamiya masking tape to the desired thickness and stuck it on the top to act as a guide for cutting. Then having the basic shape I just carried on with stanley blades and my dremel to get the the stage shown in the last photo, still work in progress but no need to go mad at this scale

Oh boy. Another interesting build to follow. I'm pulling up a chair for this one.

That is pretty amazing work, and remarkable effort for such a tiny part.
Have your micro-grit sanding cloths arrived yet? I would love to see how well your hull polished up.

The spoke holders were cleaned up and given a bit of shape by filing. Here is a shot of the completed spoke holders, with spokes fitted in one (temporarily).
The next job was to solder them to the wheel rim, again using silver solder. To hold them in the correct position, a shim of scrap aluminium 1/32” thick was shaped and drilled to accept some pins. Here is a shot of the soldering set-up.
The first two spoke holders went on just fine, but the third one didn’t want to play nice. However, sheer bloody-mindedness and determination won the day in the end. While I was at it, I re-did the main rim joint as well, as there was a slight misalignment that had been bugging me. To protect the soldered joints from de-soldering while the next joint was heated, I used a heat barrier call Cool Gel, made by LA-CO. It comes in a spray bottle, but I just squirted a bit onto the soldering mat and used an old paint brush to pick up and apply the gel to joints to be protected. This was the first time I’d used this and it works really well.
Here are a couple of shots of the completed joints. I’ve included the spokes in one of them to give an indication of how they will look once they are all together. They have been given an initial clean-up, but I may go back and do some more yet.

cog reacted to NenadM in Cutty Sark by NenadM
Idea was to present inside of boats half covered similar as hatches. I ask myself can I do this? I have seen boats in this scale made of wood with all content. Maybe in another life. Maybe in this life
Here is present look of covered boats
Also you can see that planking of boats is tricky if you want to hit this efect plank OVER plank

cog got a reaction from Piet in Cutty Sark by NenadM
Nenad, If you do not see the inside of the boats, either because they are upside down, or because of a cover, why not make four plugs and plank them. You will do yourself a big favour, and no need to pull out (the last of) your hair

cog reacted to hof00 in Endeavour 1934 by Julie Mo - Amati - Scale 1:35 - America's Cup UK J-Class Challenger
Hi Julie,
I call it Model Ship "Paralysis."
Don't worry, it will pass.... Had the same with Pen Duick in the past couple of weeks, Dredging myself out of t, then, my Glasses Frame broke.... (Lucky I have a spare pair that I can see, sort of. )
Ditto Richard, life does get in the way. (And, my sentiments also, your Endeavour looks far to good, pause, but for Gods sake, don't stop now!! )
So much of a beautiful work of Art to let it go....
(Re:-Pen Duick "Struggles.)
Cheers....HOF.

I do not know, Carl. I am not satisfied with result, and this work is on the very edge of my possibility. Also I am not satisfied how copy paper reacts in touch with water based white glue for wood
Little re-thinking follows ... Maybe to make it simple as it is on "real" stage: Two boats lay upside down and only planking can be seen, and two are covered ...
Maybe to try another type of paper/card or another material ...
Me and myself have to discuss this question
