Kusawa2000 reacted to Rustyj in HMS Portland 1770 by Rustyj - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate
I have purchased the HMS Portland kit designed by The Portland Scale Ship Company. The is done in 1:48 scale. It will have Alaskan yellow cedar, Pear and Boxwood for select parts and MDF framing. The model is designed to represent the dockyard style model of Portland as depicted in the Joseph Marshal paintings of 1774, as seen below.
I ordered the model on January 16th, and it arrived on the 21st. Chapters 1 & 2 were included in the box, and it weighed around 27 pounds (12.24 kg).
The cover is laser etched as seen below. I'm going to figure out something to do with it as it's too nice to throw away when I've emptied the box.
As I'm also currently deeply involved building the Speedwell so this build will progress rather slowly. But that is a good thing.
And we are off and running, former and keel have started to be assembled.

Kusawa2000 got a reaction from westwood in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Kusawa2000 (Mike Draper)
Hey Everyone: Its been a while (actually a long while) since I have posted any progress pictures on MSW of my building the Winnie. The main reason is that I was hitting a bit of a wall with the hull planking and decided I needed a break to recharge. To keep myself busy I did manage to finish a brand new Woody Joe kit (Kofukuj/Goju-no-to -1/75 scale) which was extremely enjoyable even though I don't read a word of Japanese 🙂. That took longer than planned but it was the needed break I was looking for.
I got back to the Winnie this fall and had to rip out some of the planking and took a second crack at it. Combined my renewed interest in getting the hull planked and three weeks of -30C outside, I managed to get the hull done to my satisfaction as well as 4 coats of wipe on poly buffed with cheesecloth.
I wanted to get these pics posted to let everyone know that Im still have a active shipyard out there and have a renewed passion in getting the Winnie built.
Here are some progress shot of the Winnie as of today and the completed Woody Joe pagoda. I will keep ya posted as I move onward to the stern galleries.
Enjoy

Kusawa2000 got a reaction from MAGIC's Craig in SS Klondike II by John Ruy - 1/8” = 1’ (1/96 scale) - Sternwheeler Riverboat
John: There is another paddlewheeler in Dawson City also managed by Parks Canada. Her name is the SS Keno. She is bigger than the Klondike and very impressive! I have attached a pic of her in Dawson as well here is the website S.S. Keno - Klondike National Historic Sites . The Keno is in better shape than the Klondike is.. Parks Canada did a massive restoration of her pre COVID and now its the SS Klondikes turn. There is also a great book titled " The Klondike Gold Rush Steamers by Robert Turner -you can find it at The Klondike Gold Rush Steamers: A History of Yukon River Steam Navigation: Turner, Robert D.: 9781550178876: Books - Amazon.ca -its a great purchase.. some amazing pics of the paddlewheelers.
There are also two grave yards in the Yukon that I know of that have the wrecks of the paddlewheelers -one at the north end of Lake Laberge at Hootilinqua and one across the Yukon River at Dawson in a area called North Dawson and wrecks all along the Yukon River. I have also attached three pics of the original SS Klondike that was accessible last summer when we had low water levels on the Yukon River.. you were able to walk on her decks -this hull is pushing 100 years old! She broke her back on the Yukon river during the paddlewheeler era and they took all of the hardware off of her and transferred her to a new hull which now sits in Whitehorse.

John: We just got out of 3 weeks of -30c and its now a balmy -20c. we have been getting a lot of snow as well. I think the system that is moving through your end of the country was what we got a few weeks ago.. its nasty.. we are back to our more seasonable temperatures... 🙂
Love the work you are doing on the SS Klondike. Not too many people take on building a model of the paddlewheelers up here.. its sad that we only have two left as the others have succumbed to fire or mother nature. My personal favourite was the SS Whitehorse (the boat on the right in the attached picture). She was on the Whitehorse waterfront until the 1970s when she was burned down with the Casca.
