With my own packaging which includes reconstructing a box to get the needed length, both USPS and UPS look like in the vicinity of $70 to send to California (worst case assumption). Large heavy boxes cost more and the box has to be like 30” long. If someone sends me their zip code I can weigh and measure more accurately and get a better estimate.

Many of the decals are too tiny to distinguish from the camo and the decals on the undercarriage are all black and I painted the undercarriage black. So I’m only going to use the larger decals on the wings and fuselage -

I haven’t yet paid much attention to the decals. I’ll be starting them today, and maybe I can figure out if there are letter codes. I originally purchased this kit for 2 reasons: 1 it was on sale for about $12, and 2: it looked interesting. I don’t really try to “collect” any specific type of aircraft. Just whatever appeals to me at the moment. Thank you for the compliment on the camo. I didn’t know it was “winter” camo. I was, to be honest, quite puzzled as to what it was supposed to be. The book looks interesting, but we are trying to reduce our collection of stuff, not add to it😁. Maybe I can find it in the library. -

For you non-physicists, one Planck length is about 0.000000000000000000000000000000000016 meters (should be 34 0s if I counted correctly) -

The landing gear is in. A bit messy as the mounting points were about 5-10 Planck units wide, and the plastic so thin that a single glance would bend it in half. I’m waiting for the paint to dry before installing the landing gear doors. These have no mounting points at all😬 -
I have a Mamoli Victory that I started and totally lost interest in. I will give it away free! I can’t guarantee that everything is still in the box; I’m pretty sure that I may have cannibalized a few blocks over time. Shipping will be on the order of $100 which I think is too steep, but that’s what UPS told me a year or two ago when I offered this before. However, If someone within say 50 miles of Leesburg, VA , wants it I am willing to meet at a reasonable halfway point. I’d like to see this go to someone who will finish it rather than trash it. We are in the process of some serious down sizing; selling our home and buying a much smaller place and I am going to have to really restrict the ship yard. watch this space as there may well be more kits for sale or donation in the next 6 months.

The engines are in place. The landing gear and some small details (which I would surely break off if not done at the very end) and the decals are all that’s remaining. I am going to finish her before returning to the Morgan. -

The base coat, a light blue Tamiya color, was brushed on. 2 coats with a very light sanding between. The dots were done with a micron pen (picture). I drew a wiggly line of single dots and then redid the same line about 2 more times at a slight offset. The trick is not to get too repetitive or create obvious repeated patterns. It went remarkably fast. I have never been successful with an airbrush. They always clog up before any paint actually comes through. And it takes forever to clean them out. All of this is probably due to operator error and ignorance. -
I have read several books on whaling in the past, including Moby Dick, about 3times

Beautiful ship and model. I always loved this story about the original race. Legend has it that while watching the race, Queen Victoria asked who was second, and received the famous reply: "There is no second, your Majesty."

Does anyone know why this structure is called a "hurricane house"?

It is a shame, but enough is visible that one has to do all the detail. A lot of plastic aircraft kits are like that. Detailed interiors that one never sees

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
