Stevinne got a reaction from Canute in HIJMS MIKASA 1902 by Jeff59 - FINISHED - HobbyBoss - 1/200 - PLASTIC
I came to this build log late, but will now definitely stick around. She's beautiful. Those ships' boats are small models all themselves.

Very nice. Just found this build log. I really like the black and unpainted etch scheme. One thing that got me back into ship modeling was going to a museum and seeing a model of an early destroyer where they left the brass work unpainted. I thought it looked very sharp. A similar vibe here.

So, here's what I've wound up with: Scientific Bounty in approximately 1:120 scale. Got it cheap on eBay because it was partly assembled and there's a few missing or damaged pieces, though I don't think anything that can't be easily replaced. Also could use upgrades on top of modifications -- it doesn't even come with sails, for one. But I think it's an okay start.

Jeff,
It is funny you mentioned the Bismarck waiting in the queue.... I do have the Mikasa, Bismarck and now Yamato in my queue. I think I need a couple more lives to finish them all.

My queue is longer and my time shorter 😂 give you a laugh I have Bismarck, Titanic, Hornet, Hood, Iowa and an Arizona not started, considering buying Yamato Scharnhorst and Rodney and this is just in 1/200 scale and I kid you not there are hundreds of other models some of them serious, even want to buy the x wingnut wings 1/32 Lancaster, have been building Mikasa for two years past, what do you think my chances are, and don’t say asylum 😂

Hi Harley!
Haha, women look at things differently. I think I have a very strong "woman" gene when it comes to some things. I like "pretty" stuff as mentioned in my opening. I do a lot of stuff to please my wife and daughter...and other women haha. I do other "girly" stuff. When I'm not working on my motorcycle, I'm cross stitching haha. Here's a sample of that.

Stevinne reacted to Baker in Mary Rose by Baker - scale 1/50 - "Your Noblest Shippe"
Welcome on the start of what will become a long build log of the Mary Rose. The idea is to build this model like on the cover of the book "Mary Rose, Your Noblest Shippe"
HISTORY (Wikipedia)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Rose
MUSEUM
https://maryrose.org/the-history-of-the-mary-rose/
BOOKS
INDEX
Frames (bulkheads)
Design
Building slip and align the frames
Fillerblocks
Planking
Keel and lower hull planking
Planking between wale 1 and 3
Treenails
Waist an bow
Rear castle
Build up
Cannon deck
Basis
Base plate
Started sawing wood at the beginning of last year (cherry)
Books have been bought and partially read.
The frames have been enlarged with a printer to a scale of approximately 1/48 - 1/50.
I first wanted to build on a scale of 1/45 (like my Pelican). After an initial investigation whether I have room for a fully finished model on that scale, it will be a scale of 1/50. 1/45 will be too big to fit in the closet.
The first step is drawing out the frames on paper (3D designing and printing is not my thing, drawing, sawing, filing, sanding and making dust is).
To be continued

Stevinne reacted to myxyzptlyk2003 in Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors (Graphic Novel Version)
While I can't vouch for the "comic" version, do not judge the original 2005 book by this version even though it is by the same author. The original 2005 book is an excellent and riveting account of the Battle of Samar and the US destroyers involved in it. The original book does an excellent job of telling the story of the bravery and heroism of the original "tin can sailors".
As to reviews, almost all reviews I have read about the original book are 4 or 5 star reviews.
If you haven't read the original book I would highly recommend it.

Stevinne reacted to knightyo in How much was actually painted?
I'll bet I'm not alone in my modeling process. If I build something and the joints look magnificent, I'll leave it as natural wood. If what I've built needs filler or is sub-par, it gets painted in order to hide my sins. 😊

Stevinne got a reaction from mtaylor in Help needed
This might help. I'm assuming the painting is aboard HMS Victory on the night before Trafalgar. Wikipedia says Victory had a beam of 51ft, so likely sort of close to that.
