Thunder got a reaction from maddog33 in HMS Cruiser by Thunder - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64 Scale
Hi, as requested photographs of the parts. I have realised that I have probably had this kit for probably 15 years. My wife brought it me after visiting the companies premises and having a tour. At the time Mars had just come out and they were developing Pickle.

A few of the parts are not shown as the build has already started.

Main bulkhead removed and marked up ready for bulkhead fitting. I was actually getting into position over the drawing for marking on the bearding line, wale position etc. Then you can transfer out across bulkheads for fitting of planks in those positions from the start.

Unfortunately difficult to overlay between drawings to do the marking of the wale position. It was at this point I noticed that the drawing shows the keel to be longer and bulkhead positions out of place.

This picture shows the discrepancy at the bow. I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I do expect drawings to be accurate after all it is what we take measurements from. This was the issue with the Brig Supply. That model even had discrepancies for the same dimension between each drawing.

    George,

That's interesting, you have obviously done your research. I started this kit a few years back but did so whilst on holiday with no data to consult. It seems that I might have to restart. I assumed, with the masts having royals, that it was as originally built, at later rebuilds these were lowered but so was some of the top hamper of the hull. She was eventually altered again and the guns were reduced.

What are you going to do with the missing engravings on the beak head / bow or were these removed on this rebuild as well?

Hi, I may be wrong but I thought that consensus of opinion was that the first wooden model you have shown above was proven to be inaccurate and that she did in fact have a square tuck. Seems  very early in history to have a round tuck. If I get chance later I will look to see if I can find this review of that model. I know it was built much later on a commission for someone.

The BS1363 plug with the square pins replaced the round in the 1950's. As i said only shaving socket have a round pin and that is because they are for use in a special location (bath room) using a SELV supply. You can buy an adaptor to use outside of the bathroom but they are low rated in current and would not supply an iron.

Can you please stop saying 220V as it is 230V and you are bordering on the tolerances for damage to electronic equipment (216V) in the UK.

Am i looking at a different item, what's with all  the wires that i cannot see. This shows a Europeon 110V class2, double insulated (no earth) portable device with a moulded unfused plug.

Also these are great but that part you have to slide the plank under gets hot and its a real pain inserting the plank under it to start the process. You need three hands.

British Voltage is rated at 230V but if measured is generally 240 -245. That is not a BS1363 plug. At a push you may be able to get it in a shaver socket. You can still get 5A round pin sockets for lighting circuits but have not generally seen round pin sockets in domestic wiring since the 1960's. In industry you get round pin commando 230V Sockets but these still have an earth pin so could not use one of these.

Of course, could use an adaptor but it is highly likely this would be a 110V device and so you will find it won't last long.

Your choice not to trust what I say but after 30 years in electrical industry and the last 10 of this as a Senior Electrical Engineer I would hope I have some idea.

Make sure you confirm voltage is 230V as it has a euro style plug on it.

Finally, completion. All photographs between seem to be lost.

I used the mouldings that came with the kit where possible as I am not at the stage of being able to do my own. Comparing with 'built to kit' dimension models she is of a finer run in and appears longer because of this. Gun port positions and the windows are placed to the book dimensions.

I chose stub masts as I thought they, will the associated rigging, would prevent easy view of the detail. They are not glued in so I can change this later.

Quarter badge window frames were done with the timber supplied and I wasn't happy. so I cheated a little on the other windows and used (horror) Plastic.

Final photographs. Just a few minor tidy ups to do so as far as here is concerned this build is complete. Base board for stand made out of an offcut from when i did my skirting boards. Brass plaque was from Engraving World

    Hi Vane,

So true regarding Diana, I have just got to this stage and had three attempts adding wood to the ply frames before being reasonably happy and then drove the wife mad when sanding with the noise like drawing your finger nails down a chalk board, a bit like in the jaws film.

    Hi,

Just looked into this build for the first time. You have done a great job so far. I had this kit many moons ago but sold it on due to its accuracy. Starting to think i get too hung up on the final result being as historically accurate as possible and so taking the fun out of the build. After all my favourite build was Corel's Resolution which i did just build from the box only modifying the rigging.

The Unicorn is an interesting ship with its beakhead bow and two light quarter galleries, features that are accurate to the original. Sometimes wish i had kept hold of her. I myself had found an old second hand kit quite cheaply (not £15.00 though).

Hi Jason, I took from the inboard profile plan for Diana J5531. Interestingly you can see similar movements on the deck plan J5527.

Seems a lot of work to move an existing ship for 61/4 inches as it shows moving the bits, wheel and skylight for each change as well. Most probably for slight modifications for each successive order. Most were ordered at the same time including Artois, Diana, Diamond, Apollo, Jason and Seahorse. The fir ships Clyde and Tamar and then Ethalion were ordered later. So unless the plans were used for another class we can assume the alterations were for these last three ships. (four if take into account Clyde was rebuilt). Of course only conjecture. All the original batch seemed to have been launched within a close period of time so was not after the first to improve sea quality.

    Hi,

Investigating that Mizzen mast position have come across the details below

Sorry for poor drawing but hopefully can show the two locations for the Mizzen mast. One drawn in red which looks to compare with measurements of the kit. Second in green that seems to be as AOS book. Therefore difficult to say when these were moved. There is two lines plans in the NMM. looks like as originally built with open bulwarks the mast was as kit, with built up barricades as AOS. This would imply kit incorrect but still conjecture unless someone has the dates.

I have not purchased the drawings so cannot read the text, can someone help with this?
