Pretty good!

I've been working on this gun rigging prototype for two days now and I think this about as good as I can create. I can never duplicate Bill's gun rigging. I tried and failed miserably. One thing I know...my rig is much better than Constructo's.

With my fat and shaky fingers, there's no way I can rig them in place. I did that on my first build, but it only had two guns.

I just glued together a mock gunport so I can rig the guns when I get the blocks I just had to order. Constructo doesn't call for blocks on their guns only knots. That's not good enough for me, so I ordered 100 2mm single hole blocks (I only need 88 but I had to order round lots.) So, I might as well fish while I wait for the blocks.

Decking the Enterprise

I simulated nail holes by using an extra sharp number two pencil. It looks very good. -
While I ponder how to rig my guns....I'm closing the shipyard and going fishing in MInnesota. See you all in a week.

Before I start rigging guns or anything, I built this line dispenser. When I rigged my first ship, I had several rats nests and birds nests of tangled line and that was only a two masted schooner.

By the way, I forgot to mention I used heavy doses of CA for the glue. Fumes got thick, but it holds like crazy.

I finished the eyebolts ahead of my original schedule since my fat, shaky fingers got more nimble as time went by. Now I have to design the tackle with blocks and all since Constructo just says just ties knots . I'll be plagerizing from all your postings.

I'll experiment with the drilling of a small hole. I'm not painting the cannons...they'll stay brass. The whole ship is natural with no paint except for the blackened chimney.

Yes...you're correct and I'm working on a solution for that. I've tried several methods and didn't like the results.

It took me over a half hour to do just three guns with two rings each. At this rate gun rigging will take a very long time. Oh well....what else is there to do?

Full Dress Rehearsal!! All guns in place. Just looking at the fully armed model gives one pause at the lethal fire power of a close aboard broadside would have! I wouldn't want to sail close aboard this ship with enemy colors flying. Enough fiction....now to rigging the guns.

Making all those guns seems like a never ending process. Imagine making them for the HMS Victory!!!

Here's a dress rehearsal for the first 11 guns. I'm doing it to check out the scope of the rigging and to do some touching up on spots I don't like. I want fairly good continuity down the line.

I'm half way through making the cannons. Another few days should do it. Then I'll start rigging them.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
