"Stain"  can have more than one meaning as it is commonly used.

it is often used to describe any product that colors wood.  This comes from turning the verb "to stain", meaning anything that colors, into a noun.

In general two different agents are used.

An actual "stain" is a semi transparent paint.  If you use this on wood before using PVA, there is a possibility of the pores and fiber irregularities being filled. A weak PVA bond is possible.

If CA is used - it will bond to the paint layer.  Its strength will be the strength of the paint to the wood.

Some stain products advertise as being "penetrating".  This probably means that there is a mixture of paint and dye in the product.

A dye soaks into the wood. It is a clear solution of dye molecules in the solvent base,  It does not affect the surface or the pores.

There are two types of dye - water based and alcohol based.

The water based dye soaks in more deeply.  On a piece of furniture, this can make a difference in he quality of the look.

At model scales,  the surface is too small for a deeper color to be visible.  Water base will cause wood to swell with the first application or two - sanding and or scraping is needed to fix this.

Just water can be used first, sanded and then dyed - it may save a second dye application to hide what the sanding did to the color.

Alcohol based dye saves all that. The wood does not swell and it dies more quickly.

A stain product makes its living by turning cheap and poor quality wood into something that looks better - to partially hide boring grain - often on open pore wood species that need a thick pore filler.

A dye is meant for high quality wood, where the grain wants being accentuated instead of being hidden.

Thanks. I have a Danish oil stain I was thinking of using left over from a turning I did.

    Eindride,

I tried to comment a few days ago but it seems like the post did not take.

Your work is beautiful! I love the carving on the bed headboards.

But I think that you have made a mistake on the niddy noddy. The end pieces should be perpendicular to each other and not in the same plane. Then the yarn is wound as in the attached photo. I wonder if the Oseberg niddy noddy was crushed in the burial.

My wife is a (former) hand weaver and spinner, and has done a lot of research on Vikings for a couple of recent novels. She informed me that the small wooden containers in the Oseberg burial contained cannabis seeds.

I built the Billings model of the Oseberg ship a few years ago. There should be a link to gallery photos in my signature file.

    Niddynoddy.jpg.b14412228026b023357173edd7c2ee38.jpgHi Rod.

Thank you, I said I wouldn't do another bed but I've started on one 😅

The Arms on the Oseberg Niddy Noddy's were in the same plane as far as research shows as they are attached by mortice and tennon joints. I've attached a photo of the original.

Your wife is correct about the cannabis seeds in the small containers.

Hello, today marks two years that I have been learning how to build models. I join MSW two years ago and I think I have not missed to many days scene  then lol.  I have  been having the time of my life, meeting  people,  getting to know some  as well.

I was going to start  my Pegasus,  but wanted to finish my Columbus ships. As  LA Nina will be my next build20230518_214107.thumb.jpg.1adc9ad7ab296faa79116cd720cc7cea.jpg

So I open the box last night and wanted to post, but dew to technical issues 🙃  lol I went to work.20230518_214705.thumb.jpg.cdeeaad5b0c91e9acced1eb8bace9b2c.jpg

The keel and the bulk head came together  nicely. So I move on up to the upper deck, and planked that as well  So Iam about to start planking. But FIRST  I will give  Chucks  video  one more go lol. 20230520_150718.thumb.jpg.271b955f3457327de15851883774315a.jpg

Glad  to be part of this wonderful organization. Both the NRG and MSW have become important to me,  my recent panic attack 🙃 🙂  because I couldn't log on kinda  made that a little more clear.  So to everyone  who has put up a like or a laugh  thankyou so much.

It will be hard for me to control myself not to rush this because I will be doing the Pegasus  right after  the Nina. I do have a Viking Long Boat  to do as well but I thought I save that for when I get boared  with the Pegasus  lol.

Now on we go, video,  planking lol

Looking good. What Viking long ship do you have?

  4. So here are the Billings kits I have.

Quite a surprise getting the 720 at a bargain price off ebay and when it arrived finding that it comes with a mini oseberg ship and a Billings Oseberg 518.

I actually messaged the seller querying why 2 kits to be told he decided to send both as had advertised them separately several time but had no interest.

Thinking I'll make the Oseberg 720 first.

    Unboxing pictures to follow soon

Very nice! I used to do Viking period re-enactment, and those artefacts are pretty amazing.

I know what all of them are for except the little cylindrical thing in your hand(though I suppose I could make a guess - for spices, salt, something like that).

    Steven

    Hi Steven.

You're spot on with your guess. There were several in the grave they contained seeds.

  6. Hi and welcome to my build log for the Oseberg ship. This will be my first ship build so progress may be a bit slow 😅

Why the Oseberg ship? Simply because in spare time I do living history displays from the early medieval and have made replicas from the Oseberg burial so why not the ship.

I've been looking at other build logs from Jack Panzeca , Von-Kossa and Jason Builder and I'm in awe of their work.

Along the way I'll be making a few changes (such as the sail. Will be making one from wool as per the original) and hope they'll enhance the project.
