Hello Steve J.I built this kit many years ago .It is actually a very nice kit.I really had only one issue with it - the cast metal dummy barrel supports are not deep enough. As a result the bottom row of cannon stick out too far.I probably could have fixed it by insetting the supports farther or by finding some shorter cannon barrels. As far as research I can`t help you there - I didn`t do any research.I built it as they say "out of the box". I will follow your build with interest as I also have this kit in the closet.Looks like you are off to a good start. I don`t know when I will get to it.

You are probably right about the paper even though I did clear coat it.My intention from the start was to get as close to the coloring of the 1/10 model as I could so I will leave it as is.By the way I also have the Corel kit so I may do it differently.

Been there ,done most of these things.2 items of caution - don`t do rigging with long sleeves on & be carefull going through doorways.

Thanks Joe! Thanks also Michael.Luckily for me those small decorations in the openings are castings included in the kit although they were difficult to paint because of their tiny size. They are not entirely accurate but considering the age of the kit they look ok if you don`t look too close.

A small update.Upper half of the port lower gallery done.Going real slow - i`m not the greatest at painting. Mark

Thanks Matti - after seeing yours maybe I should have aged mine a little bit. Thanks Amfibius -your comment is appreciated. Thanks John,By the way do you have a log going on your Louise? Michael - thanks.Yours & all the other Vasa builds keep me trying to improve mine to keep up with all the quality work.

Thanks for your nice comment! There are so many things I am trying to "fix" on this it`s starting to feel like a scratch build.

Excellent work. It`s interesting to see the differences from the different manufacturers of this ship.

Thanks .By the way I know the towers are not quite as vertical as they should be but it`s too late to try and re-do them now.I tried to bend them some before putting them on but bronze does not like to bend very well except where it`s thin.

Finally got one upper gallery done. Not perfect but i`m ok with how it turned out.Now back to more painting. Mark

Great demonstration - what size wire are you using? -
Nice job on the cathead braces.Luckily for me my kit has castings that are very close to the real ones in appearance.

Thanks.Lots more figures to paint. Many of them are incorrect but the one nice thing is they are all laid out on sticky cardboard in the positions that they go on the ship.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
