marktiedens replied to Guybrarian's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I agree with the previous comments. One thought for the next time - before planking the upper part of the hull I cut the posts about 1/4 of the way through at deck level so they are fairly easily removed with a pair of needle nose pliers.then you can smooth the inside of the bulwarks with a very small chisel & sandpaper. -
Nice looking rudder - mine doesn`t have enough hinges.I didn`t correct it before installing it due to my failure to notice it. /Mark

Karl - I have the Corel plans because I have the Corel Wasa kit.I don`t know if the plans are available separate. The book mentioned by Ulises may be the way to go. Ulises - is the book available on Amazon or somewhere else?

Thanks again everyone.Watching all your builds progress has has raised the bar for my build. By the way I am using the Corel rig plans as the Sergal rig plans are awful. The Corel plans seem fairly close. If they are not totally accurate thats ok as neither is the rest of my build. /Mark

Many thanks to all for your nice comments. The dreaded ratlines will be started soon.I think the rigging really makes the ship start to come alive. /Mark

My Royal Louis also was short on boxwood planks - didn`t even have enough to do one side. /Mark

I see that some pictures have disappeared in some earlier posts.Unfortunately I deleted them after about a month so I can`t put them back in. /Mark

I have decided to add a stern lantern since I have never seen a ship of this era without one.I robbed a lantern from an old model of a dutch ship & modified it slightly. It had some red plastic inserts to represent glass so I removed them & made new inserts out of some clear acetate I had left over from my CC Victory. The separate panes were simulated with some fiberglass screen repair material. /Mark

I built this kit many years ago - I`m sure yours will turn out much better than mine.I still have it but I`m not too proud of it. /Mark

Panart San Felipe 1:75 Updated Version Review
marktiedens replied to Salty Dog's topic in Wood ship model kits
I feel for you Salty - having built the old version of this kit a number of years ago it seems as though they have cheapened it up somewhat.Mine had no laser etched decking or balsa & although the instructions were sketchy the plans & materials were pretty good.It was a pleasure to build & made into a nice looking model right out of the box.The first planking was lime & the second planking was a honey colored "walnut". /Mark -
Thanks everyone - doing much better now.You may have noticed that I built the mast with the topgallant section as on the 1:10 museum model.I see that some people omit this.I don`t know which is correct so I went ahead & added it. /Mark

Finally able to do some light work on my ship. Slowly working on the masts - foremast finished. Not perfect but neither is the rest of the build.Had to make new mast caps as the kit ones were ugly plywood & didn`t show the metal bands holding the upper sections to the caps. The dowels for the masts are walnut so they are probably a little darker than they should be.Got some of Chuck`s blocks - super nice. I have built this kit & it does make into a nice model. The biggest flaw is the lower gunport metal frames - they need to be set back farther than the plans indicate or the cannons will stick out too far.Plans & instructions are ok. /Mark

Frank, I juat took some semi-gloss black acrylic paint & thinned it about 5 to 1 with acrylic thinner & painted the cannons with it 5 or 6 times. It didn`t darken them all that much but it made the details stand out better.Seemed to give them a sort of antiqued look.Yours may already look similar. You might try experimenting with different ratios of thinner - if using acrylics you can always wash it off before it dries if you don`t like it.

Nice work. I believe the cannons were made of bronze so painting them pure black might be a little dark - just my opinion.I darkened mine with a thin black wash .You might try what Nigel suggested - blacken them & rub with a brass wire brush. /Mark

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
