    Here is a new build.
I will build this one at a hobby model club.
    So it don't go fast!

Between 1997 and 1999 a replica of the Duyfken( Little Dove ) was built in Freemantle ,Australia to commemorate the first discovery of Australia.
When she was in Holland I was visiting her and I always want to build her.
And Kolderstok make a kit so at least her she is.

    Length 650 mm
    Width  250 mm
    Height 550 mm

And then a few pictures of what was in the box

While i'm waiting for the plates i have done a little bit more.
Painted the stern fascia, windows and ornaments.
    Also the trophy of arms.
You really need a steady hand but i'm happy with the result.

Last tuesday it was the first evening at the modelclub.
Because everybody wanted to see what i was doing i only glued 3 frames.....
The rest of the time was giving information about the proces of building.
A few things I'll be doing at home like painting.
    There are two doors.
One is going behind a deck and the other one is going on the back of the stern.
That's the one with the white color on it.

    Thanks Ben,

Don’t forget that with one hour driving we are in another country.
    It’s not that far.
I have put her in a box and she was standing on the backseat with things beside her….
    And she survived 😃

Retirement......for you it's 5 weeks Mike ,for me a little bit longer 😞
10 years ago you can ( have to ) get retired at 65......now it is 66 and 10 months for me.
It depend in what year you are born.
Yesterday was my 65 birthday so I know that I can go on for more then 1 1/2 year.
But ok, it is what it is.
    The the update.....
All deck furniture is on it.
    Bowsprit is done
    Lower masts are in place.
Now I can go on with the shrouds and ratlines.
Not so much as I use to be.

I realized I hadn’t posted anything in a while, so here’s the latest progress report.  I had less time over the holidays to work on the Statenjacht, but now I’m able to pick up the pace a bit.  I think I’m about 90% done, with only the rest of the rigging and the sails yet to go. I’m hoping to finish this by the one year mark in March! As others have said, definitely a hobby that rewards patience.  Over the past week I did the ratlines. It was my first ever effort at these, and the tips on MSW definitely helped, especially using a 50/50 mix of PVA and water to seal and tighten everything.  My results aren’t perfect by a long shot, but they’re not awful either so I’m basically happy with how they came out.  Getting there!

Welcome to my build log for the Speel-Jaght, a 1:50 kit by Kolderstok.

I am still working on my Melonseed project, but there are often waiting periods and breaks when it is nice to have another project to work on. I bought the Speel-Jaght kit from Kolderstok last year, and every time I see it on my shelf, I get excited. I finally caved-in to the excitement and started it!

Here is the box shipped all the way from the Netherlands to the US:

A little bit of damage to the box, but the internal contents were just fine. The contents include a manifest which confirms that all necessary components are in the box (in other words, someone actually audited the kit before shipping it. I think that says a lot about Kolderstok's quality control 👍

This kit uses an interesting construction method for the hull. In this kit, the false keel and bulkheads are not permanent like in many other kits. For the Speel-Jaght, the hull is built around the form created by the false keel and bulkheads and then removed completely. According to the instructions, this resembles a common construction method used during the historical period in which the Speel-Jaght was built and sailed. I can say confidently that this is a common method for building full-sized traditional wooden boats.

I cut the pieces out and assembled the form. I feel like Kolderstok did a very good job with tolerances and making it very easy to know how to assemble (notice the numbers on both the frame and false keel). I should also mention that the points where the pieces need to be cut out seem to be located where the potentially rough cut/break will not affect the final product 👍

It was my privilege to go on board 'Duyfken' while she was being built in Fremantle. She's so beautiful and she's part of our history as Australians.

    Have fun with it.
