  1. Thanks, Keith. The 'Meteor' is unfortunately languishing beside my bench at the moment as I'm using what time I have at home to work on repairs to the 'Duchess'. Bedford, it is certainly difficult to bypass parts of the model that I think could be done differently, but if they are correct and presentable I'm leaving them where they are. There are some items that need to be re-built or corrected as they are just wrong for the ship at the period of the model build, but I'm keeping them to a minimum. On the other hand, I'm really enjoying working on the 'Duchess' and would never have started a model of her myself, so it's a good project. Thanks for the comments, Rick! John
  2. We continue to progress. The spanker mast now has shrouds and a forestay, and you will see that there in now bagged cargo in number 5 hatchway. I've also now completey removed the top rail around the long poop deck in preparation for the future installation of a polished wood railing. John
  3. That's a cheery thought first thing in the morning, Keith! I think I've got a bit of time let yet.
  4. Some clever soldering solutions going on here. The original builder of the 'Herzogin Cecilie' that I'm working on at the museum had an idea - he made the lower masts of brass, so all the subsequent brass parts are simply soldered on. John
  5. A very nice looking plug, Nils. I hope to resin likes the detail on the rope fender. John
  6. Work achieved varies enormously, Jerome. On quiet days it can be almost like working at home, but in school holidays you spend the entire day talking to people. I make up for it by doing some of the work at home so that this model can continue to progress. John
  7. Hello dan, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  8. Fascinating footage. Thanks for posting. John
  9. You're right! It's your little ship. Just keep at it and learn as you go. John
  10. Nils, that's some weight you've got holding down that piece of ply! John
  11. Nils, gravity davits rely for their operation on just that - gravity; so weighted boats and very low friction would be essential. John
  12. Hello Daniel, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  13. Yes. it is, Keith, but I keep looking at the model and seeing all the work I need to do on it! John
  14. Looking good, Mark. Can't wait for the next update. John
  15. Thanks, Keith. It's a long road ahead, but I'm really looking forward to seeing her grow. I'm starting to think that my biggest problem will be finding work time at the museum. She's a real hit with our visitors and I'm finding myself spending a lot of my museum days just talking to visitors about the ship and the model. John
  16. Thanks for all those photos of the Sutton Hoo ship replica, Keith. I've been fascinated by this ship ever since, ads a kid, I read my father's book on the original excavation. I could just never get my head around excavating a ship that basically wasn't there - just stains in the sand. John
