With the water in place and the wooden base built, the ship itself constructed and painted and now a new useful tool to use I guess there is no excuse but to proceed with getting the Kraken inside the bottle.

Hey, wait a minute there! We just seem like dorks because we do things differently.     :D
Seriously though, thanks! I guess pride does enter into it a little bit....I'd just like to see how much of this can be done from scratch. I will probably buy blocks and rigging line from Chuck, but that's it.....hopefully. The scale was also a factor, at 1:96 these things are pretty small.

Sjors:  A dozen?!!   I think my little termites can only manage the ones I need for my ship  ...maybe your gnomes can give you some help.
I have already discovered how sharp that scalpel is! My ship has been christened a few times with blood - and it's not even near being ready to launch!

Bob: Thanks! The longer strips are solid and the cross pieces are separate little pieces of wood.........so........only 5,000 tiny blocks.

    Popeye: Thank-you as well!
You're right about the 1/32, but it's flat sheet instead of square stock, and I cut the strips.
My husband is a retired pressure pipe welder/fitter and has a stockpile of soapstone sticks - for marking steel pipe. He seems to have found innumerable uses for these little things. He suggested that I sand the stick with very fine paper and rub the resulting powder into the jig surface - works like a charm!

thanks Bob.   yea.....I know.  the worse part is,  is that I've seen these pictures before :D    I'm not kick'in the can over it though,  I'd rather find the fun in figuring out the solution,  than get mad at it.   I got my BashMan on!

Just found your build.  Nice planking job and I like the way you opened up the hold in the center.

Nice fix, Popeye.  Why oh why can't we know all about a boat before we build.

sometimes you just have to say it is good enough!!

Hi everyone. Ever since I first read about the famous Sparkman and Stevens' designed yawl (built over 80 yrs ago snd she's still racing), I've wanted to build a model of her. So, after thirty years of dreaming, I've now started to build a scratch built, miniature, fully detailed model, complete with interior accommodation, etc. The model is a true miniature, ie only 15 cms approx in hull length.

As you can see, I have tried to adhere to full sized construction practices by using a built up keel and bent frames. All the wood was cut using my miniature table saw, which, is a lot of fun and satisfying, not to mention, cost effective.

I still have a long way to go before I finish the masts, winches, blocks and rigging, but it's been a hell of a lotta fun so far.

I hope you enjoy the model and photos. I will post more pics as work progresses.

Comments, feedback and suggestions are most welcomed!

thank you Rowan........your just in time then........finding out that she really doesn't have the normal cap rails,  like other ships,  is a bit of an eye opener.   it's a good thing I didn't get them all on and find this out.   I have an idea......I'll have an update soon.  thanks for the good word,  and welcome!

that's not the way to be Adam........never get angry at your build.  use the force and think of a solution.   you'll see soon.   thanks for your good words.....I'm going to have fun

You do realize though John, that at the enormous scale (for you) of 1:48, you will have to make all the rigging FUNCTIONAL (i.e. working D-shackles etc  ).

    Good afternoon.
Everything is prepared for the first planking. I‘ve glued the two parts of the false deck to the hull.

Here are the filler blocks at the bow and the stern:

And here are the first planks using 2x2 mm stripes:

Those stripes are only for the lower keel section.

Although there were no problems at all the model is quite bulky because of it‘s length.

Rainy day, I thought some indoor tasks would be just the thing, so I've started carving the sea base. I have some new Flexcut chisels on order but they'll be another few days so I had a shot at resharpening the two old gouges I have. Gouges are a total sod to sharpen but I got them to a reasonably servicable state. This is the result so far, lots more wood to be removed. I'm considering training a beaver...
The hole for the model is oversize to allow setting it in at an angle and the spare space around the edge will be filled in with milliput - white.

Christian, Good luck with Diligent, she really had an extreme hull form! Scottish Maid, of course comes from a rather different tradition, and really isn't related at all to the Baltimore ships. Of the Baltimore Clippers, I have a 'Fair Rosamund' under construction and the one I'd really like to do would be 'Grecian'.

    Popeye,

Good to hear that you're going to have another go at the rail!  If you don't, in ten years time you'd be looking at the model in its case and still thinking, "Hmmm, I really should have re-done that rail!"

The other day I was visiting a man who makes cabinets in his garage.  He had a jar of vinegar in which he had put a few links of steel chain.  It was the darkest rusty color I had ever seen.  Using a rag he rubbed some onto a piece of walnut.  The walnut instantly turned a beautiful black with warm over tones of brown like lovely ebony.

The more I look at the pictures the more I see. On the drawings of the Nokomis and on the picture of the Hoga at sea trials there are only two towing bitts on each side, but I noticed that in the picture of the Hoga at Pearl Harbor there was another set of bitts added to each side. (see red circle)

    Not here.

    There they are.

And I cannot find a stern drying grid in any of the pictures of the Hoga or the City of Oakland. So here is where we are, the hull is done and the main part of the cabin. Now for the upper deck and the pipes and vents around the cabin.
