  1. You must be especially proud of how you pulled off those fixs. I sure would be! I wish I tried your alcohol heat gun trick. Mine’s planked to just below the wales. so far. I did two rip offs and always took off more than I probably needed to because the edges of some of the best planking would chip, removing the bad ones. C’est La Guerre. Kurt PS. I really like how the yellow cedar looks.
  2. Using a paper guide to determine the length between sheer and keel to help determine plank width. I’ve done a few times but with big chunks of time between doing it. Actually, now that I think about it should be the depth of the rabbet. The first one from the bottom is the garboard.
  3. I’m having a senior moment, and need a kick start. When you make a tick strip for planking, do you start (or end it) from the depth of the rabbet or the surface of the keel. It should be obvious, but at this particular moment it ain’t. Kurt
  4. I'm trying to get a copy of the Shipwright's Apprentice section (pages 82 -86) from Ships-in-Scale Jan/Feb issue 2009. I can't find my CDs anywhere. Would anyone be able to help? Thanks. Kurt
  5. Dave, I just skimmed the monograph at the NRG webpage. That really looks like a fun project! I can’ t decide which version I liked better, weathered or unpainted. I always liked work boats. I just skimmed the pics, what are her final dimensions? I know you’re gonna enjoy this, I sure would. Good luck with her!! Kurt ( the other)
  6. Mark, The internet has it’s down side. Just yesterday I drove to this Electronics store near me, a real one that was like an old time hardware store. You could poke around forever, finding this and that. The building was empty, they gave up. About a year ago, the only real hobby shop in my area closed. That hurt. I use the internet, the UPS guy has become like family now. I’m am Amazon super duper Prime guy. I don’t like EBay that much. I miss going to the store, seeing and feeling what things are like. BS-ing with the people at the stores. That’s life. Gaetan, Like I had said to you, I have a number of lights and most likely will be getting a new brighter one. Still like the one on the Optivisor, its always pointing at where I’m glancing. I like tinkering. I can never figure why some threads will go on for a bit and others die at the get go. Maybe the answer is on the internet. Kurt
  7. I love the Pelican! Is St. Peter guarding the door to your shop? That’s definitely heaven. Kurt
  8. The size, shape, weight and rechargeable battery were major factors in the search. All this took was a piece of velcro to attach it. The length was the starting factor in fitting on the visor, then I tried to find the brightest that would probably fit. This worked, so I stopped looking. There are probably better solutions, but I’m happy with it (for the moment). Canadian Tire would be about a 10 hour drive, so factoring in the gas it probably wouldn’t be worth it 🙂 . Kurt
  9. For sure! I am using it with a #2 Optivisor lens. The light is basically weightless, no battery weight. It really is amazing how nice it is to have good illumination without any shadows. I actually could theoretically add a second one and focus them to the same location, but that coulld be a waste of time and money. For me, its like I knocked years off my aging eyeballs. So long and short, yes, (one of those good finds). I hope I don’t have to have a disclaimer and say I haven’t any connection, but I don’t. Kurt
  10. I had thought so too, but it seems the 360 is always as a burst regardless. The 150 seems more than enough. The 360 would most likely be too intense at that focal distance. Having the light focused where you are looking with no shadows is really, really nice. I watched several video reviews (of course after I already had it). One reviewer ran it constantly at low, medium and high (150) until it blacked out. The 150 ran over and hour continuously. I don't no how quickly it will recharge, or whether it also one of the issues where its better to run completely down before charging or intermittently partially recharge yet. Maybe some tech type here at MSW would let us know. I'm happy so far. Kurt
  11. Update, I found out the turbo 360 lumen will only last 30 seconds so I guess you have work quickly. The high will stay on, but 150 lumens is mighty nice. Kurt
  12. I’ve was trying to figure how to get better lighting for my optivisor. I had the 6 LED lights with the battery pack but it just didn’t cut it. I searched for something that might work. I came across the Nitecore keychain flashlights, the Tube has 45 lumens and is $10. Then I saw the Tip which is 360 Lumens for $30!!!! Why not. It weighs less than an ounce, the battery has a usb recharger. It has 4 settings which will of course effect charge life. low (1 lumen) 46 hrs, med (35 lumens) 6.5 hrs, high (150 lumens) 1.5 hrs and TURBO (360 lumens) 30 min. It’s like aircraft landing lights!!! Yee hah. Piece of velcro and good to go. Kurt
  13. Yeah, back to Cromwell. The case looks professionally done, Mike. Nice job. Kurt
  14. Mike, It looks beautiful! Is the case vented in any way? If this was mentioned before, I’ve forgotten. Kurt
  15. I know I had mentioned it but Ed Tosti’s Young America builds, one of which is in 1/96, have chains used in the rigging. I think the time period is very close, and he did a remarkable job of it. In fact there is probably a lot of information that would be useful in your Great Eastern endeavor. Regardless, it’s an enjoyable read and the pics are great. Kurt
  16. Actually thinking about it, Ed Tosti would be the one to ask. Kurt
  17. What scale? Braiding the wire does look very convincing by the way. It isn’t too hard to do. It might be hard to do well for any kind of length beyond about 3 inches. A thought, if you can’t do it convincingly don’t do it at all. That was by no means to be nasty. It will stick out like a sore thumb is the point. Most professional models leave stuff off, because it isn’t sonething you would be able to physically see in reality. Kurt
  18. If you come to the meeting next week talk to Ken, he built a beautiful model of her. You could shoot KenW a message here, he’s a MSW member. His model is the picture on the clubs website. Kurt PS: Good luck!!
  19. Peter, The Seguin is one of my favorite tugs. To bad the Maine museum couldn’t restore her. Can’t wait to see what you can do with her. Kurt
