that was a lot quicker than with Vista........down and back up in no time! I also need to make vents for around the fore deck.......three of them. these are unlike the normal vents seen on larger ships......they look like nothing more than curved pipe. I had bought some hollow round styrene, but it's too large.....so, I'm going to do it from smaller size dowel. I cut a bunch of angled pieces......I put the puzzles together later
during all this, I had filled the openings of the spot lights with window maker. enough time had passed......lets take a look..
.......
Oh........say it isn't so! the bubble broke in the middle! the other one?.......
I'd say it gone from bad to worse...this is not good I guess the opening is too large a span for the maker to work! it's a good thing I have a backup plan........we'll get back to it later meanwhile.......back at the vents.
I began to piece together the bit to form the curve.......I think I need to make them with just a little more length.
I'll need to make some more.......I'm on the right track though, so that's a good thing. since the lights were a bust, I might as well get the window maker out of them, before it totally dries......at least I can salvage them.
out of all this.....there was at least one small ray of light.......the orbcom GPS module

I would have had this update up sooner, but I got rid of Vista today. I upgraded to windows 7......so far it hasn't been too much of a problem getting use to it I did finally order.....and receive the update for the decal maker. once I install the whole thing, I can see how much of a change there is.......enabling the transparency function would be nice
so now.....here I am with two updates. with the computer stuff going on, I tinkerd with the A.G.....more sub assemblies with this critter! yesterday, I began with the spot lights......painting the cavities with silver. I useda crappy brush though because I got some on the outside of the light body
while the silver was drying......enough to sand off, I made the other pulley.
once dry enough....the silver was sanded of and the bodies were repainted.
more pieces of dowel was cut up......these still need to be shaped
dowel is a tough wood to sand by hand.......cramped them like crazy doing it. here they are in their final shape.
the base parts were assembled, as they are to be the same color........the restwere painted in respective colors
I will be back in a bit.........more updates! I need to restart the computer

Have finally made some headway on getting the rails installed. I'm working from stern to stem so we began with the quarterdeck and stern rails:
All of the rails are 3/16 x 1/16 boxwood and are faced on the hull side with 1/16 x 1/16 basswood molding which was beaded using a scraper. The camera is simply not picking this up due to the black color but it's there. It will be more distinct on the forward railings where the molding will be natural.
Then stern rail was a bit of a challenge as it's a compound curve which was made by a combination of lateral and edge bending. It would definitely be easier to fabricate from wider stock (thereby eliminating the edge bend). But I love a challenge and needed more wood in my scrap box .
Will be moving forward now as Confed competes with the great outdoors and it's associated activities.

Those laser cut horse shoes look much nicer than photoetch. Great piece of work.

The port side is done and treenailed. I also made the horse shoe plates for the stem and keel plate at the stern. These were laser cut from laserboard. I painted and glued them on. They have little holes cut through them as you can see. The beauty of that is after gluing them with yellow glue and placing them on the model....a little bit of glue seeps through the holes and forms a nail head. But if you dont want to do that, you can drill through the holes with a #78 bit and insert some 28 gauge wire as bolt heads. ....Or just leave it as is. I will be drilling and inserting the wire as bolt heads later on. Also all of the fancy molding is in position that I want to add at this point. Now its time to thin down the bulwarks inboard. FUN ....FUN!!!

Just finished planking the port side. I added the stern post. Now to treenail the port side and add the molding... It feels good to have it all planked. It will feel even better when the treenailing is done. I was getting tired of seeing the hull without its stern post. I think it really makes a difference at this point. At least from the starboard side.

Welcome aboard, Christine. You've picked a fine project for your maiden voyage into wooden ship building.
You will come across many instances where you will need to bend wood in order to get it to sit properly and take a new shape...particularly during planking. The most common solution is to soak the wood until it is pliable and then clamp or weight it down until it dries. Once it has set it is easy to glue it into place. Most of us simply use water and have a pan handy. If you search the forum you'll find many suggestions on bending planks (including heat and the use of the microwave). A lot depends on the particular piece and it's dimensions. Sometimes just spraying it will be sufficient, at other times a good soaking is required.

I started building two jolly boats for the port and starboard davits. Even though I started with two aluminum cast shells from BlueJacket, There's a lot more work than meets the eye. The shells were a perfect size and shape with nice detail, but they required some "Dremel sculpting" to get them just right. I just finished the floor decking and will start on the seating, oars, block and tackle etc.

Thanks all for looking in.
KEN- The quarterdeck and stern rails call for black. As we move forward the moldings will be natural.
POPEYE - I'll shoot that angle once I get the railings on the waist section.

augie reacted to Modeler12 in Preferred support when planking?
I use the Panavise a lot for almost all the rigging operations, holding small parts such as blocks and a multitude of other tasks, but not to hold the frame during planking. While planking, the hull of the model has to be in the up-side-down position and clamping the keel is not practical. After all. the planks have to go around the keel as well.
I rested mine on several layers of old towels. The rail along the sides, the rail on the stern and part of the bow supported the hull with the tip of the bow hanging over the edge of my workbench.

augie reacted to Ulises Victoria in Preferred support when planking?
I use several methods. To plank while the hull is in normal position, I use a hull planking vise. To work on the undersides of the hull, I use some paint roller covers to support the upside down hull. I sometimes just use my lap.

augie reacted to rafine in Frigate Essex by Rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Kitbashed
I've begun on the fore mast running rigging by making and mounting the topgallant and royal yards and adding their rigging to the extent that I'm going to do it. It's my intention to do the yard rigging ( trusses, parrels, halliards, foot ropes, lifts, braces) and certain of the sail rigging ( clews, sheets, but no bunt, leech or reef lines). This has been my practice for quite a while and is entirely arbitrary, based upon my feelings about appearance and feasibility. I am also not doing any of the headsail and staysail rigging on this build.
These first two yards, like the previously done spritsail and sprit topsail yards, are relatively simple, since they are round in section throughout. I added the cleats, foot ropes (on the topgallant), clew and sheet blocks, lift blocks (on the topgallant), halliard ties, one end of the parrels and brace pendants (on the topgallant) before mounting the yards on their pins on the mast. I then added blocks for the lifts at the mastheads and various blocks for the braces at the main topgallant mast, main topmast stay and fore top.
I then ran the lifts, clews, halliards and royal sheets and tied off those that are belayed in the fore top. Rope coils were added for each belayed line. Lastly, I ran the braces, but didn't tie them off at this point.
I'm now in the process of making the topsail yard and lower yard.

Great work as usual. I guess the rails are supposed to be black. I like the look of black rails with the edge (where us used 1/16 x 1/16 scraped boxwood) either painted yellow. Or using boxwood or holly. Anyway, your wood working skills are second to none.
Cheers.

Hi All,
So over the weekend, I managed to attach the bulkwarks. Once more Chuck’s heat technique helped to preform the bulwarks, but I found I needed to slightly overbend the ply to hit the needed shape as it wanted to spring back more than the solid walnut I used for the main deck waterways. Port bulwark was then planked on the outside in basswood using the same 4 shift pattern as used for the deck, trying to match up the joints to the decking lines. Finally, I added the poop deck walnut rubbing strakes and waterways again heating them to preshape. Feels good to be finally starting to add some of the deck details. Thumbnails attached below and as usual thanks for reading. Cheers, Nigel.
