Work on the bowsprit is now finished. I made collars for the hearts and deadeyes and attached them to the bowsprit. The collar for the mainstay actually passes through a hole in the stem, rather than attaching to the bowsprit, and this was a fussy little job to accomplish in place. The others went fairly easily.

After this work was done, I mounted the bowsprit permanently. That left the gammoning to be done. I realized when I went to do it, that I shouldn't have installed the seats of ease earlier. They made access to do the gammoning more difficult than it should have been. It all worked out in the end, however.

The last item was to attach the fairlead to the bowsprit. I still need to do the boomkins, the railing and some eyebolts for rigging attachment to complete the work on the head (and of course the figurehead).

Frank......I am so sorry I missed you!  I thank you for the kind comment    it's funny.......I went out today and started to pick up some of the Christmas decorations for the other two.  I'm afraid that I will have to go somewhere else,  if I want wider flat stock......Hobby Lobby only has the three inch wide stuff {I think I bought them out of the four inch}.  they don't seem too good at replenishment.  I mentioned Micheal's,  I may look there next    the worst part is the hull work........get over that hurdle,  and life will be a lot easier.

thanks Mobbsie for the kind word........you touch on something,  that I do have as a thought.   there will be an S.S.Olive Oyl,  but it's on the back burner,  because I need to decide which way to go with it.   I can do it as a cartoon-ish style build,  or I can go all out with it.  I have pictures of the boat in the 'Popeye meets Sinbad' movie short......it's pretty bare bones.  hopefully,  by the time I get to it,  a few of these builds will be done.   there are other thoughts and considerations.......but for now,  I'll leave pandora's box closed

It'll be good to 'ave a ship 'o me own

Here is another update. Some progress has been made on the deck fixtures and fittings.

Here is a look at the wheel box which still needs some sanding and another coat of paint along with a peek at the wheel.

The mainmast collar and the aft hatch is also nearing completion.

The windlass is getting there, but still needs a few fittings added and the axel trimmed. The bitts will be painted after the windlass has been fitted but not attached.

    Questions and comments welcomed.

    Larry:
The deck looks good. I generally do not put any finish on the deck before I get all the deck fixtures in place. I like to use hidden dowels in the bottoms of deck fixtures so that they will be fixed in place on the deck. I can remove a hatch coaming and know that when it goes back it is in the same place every time.

Here ya go... one completed deck. The room was a little dark and I did not use the camera flash due to my usually getting too much reflection, resulting in slightly dark photos and the deck stain is not quite as dark as it appears. Even though I used a pre-stain, I still ended up with some light and dark planks but I convinced myself that is closer to reality than a very consistent color.

I sanded with 220 grit paper glued to a piece of wood, a fine Emory board glued to a piece of wood, plus I used an electric mini sander in places where needed (THANKS Augie for pointing out this wonderful little tool!) and finished up with 0000 steel wool.

Overall I'm satisfied with the final outcome.

I have a question for you modelers who been down this road before. Should I coat the deck at this time with wipe on poly to help protect it (that's my current train of thought)? I'm open to ideas. I also have the Model Expo Clear Satin Coat and plan on using Dull Coat afterwards to remove and residual shine. What is your favorite way to protect the deck finish?

Since the deck is basically complete, I'm doing my normal second guessing myself for not leaving openings for the deck furniture. Current plans will be make one item to see how it looks attached to the top of the deck. If I do not like the appearance, I'll bevel the bottom edge inward and scribe the outline and remove deck material so it's slightly recessed (the thought of doing this curls my toes.

I have shape the jib boom and gaff today.
    That's it !
For the rest i was looking at the drawings to see what i have to do with the yards.
    I wish i din't !
Because there is no manual, only pictures
But....I did the whole model without manual so why not the yards ????
It only takes time and that's something that we have enough, isn't it ?

There is a pretty simple tool you can make for the side to side squareness. Take two wood strips and bolt them together an inch or so from one end. They should be loose enough they can open up like scissors. Cut the long ends to a point. Then you place the jig with the points down and to the inside sides of the deck behind the mast the rake it back so it rests in the V at the top. This ensures the mast is square to the sides.

The rake, according to the Navy plan is about 2.5 degrees ion the fore mast, 3 degrees on the main, and almost 4 degrees on the mizzen. If you look on the Navy Sail Plan they give the rake at the bottom in inches per foot.

After considering several methods of creating the Great Cabin floor, I decided to use Chuck's method.  In my experience, doing so is never a bad idea!

The floor will be made from walnut and boxwood 3/16 x 1/32" strips.  A paper template of the area to be covered was made and a piece of 6 x 6 x 1/32" plywood was used as the base.  First, the strips were cut to approximate length and glued to the plywood base:

The curvature you see is created by the camera.  Next, a jig was made in order to create 3/16" strips to be cut with an Exacto blade:

The individual strips were then cut:

The strips were offset and then edge glued together to create the pattern:

The paper pattern was then used to cut and sand the floor for a tight fit.  Here's what we got:

Finally, just some overall shots.  The floor was finished with natural stain, WOP for protection and Dullcoat to give a flat finish:

Although most of the floor will be covered by the (open) upper decking and deck beams, I think we have a nice overall detail.  I'm pleased

Will be closing the shop for the upcoming Holiday festivities (Happy Independence Day to all of my fellow Americans).  When we return, the strains of DECK PLANKING music will be heard in the Rockies.

Oh, we have just passed 600 hours into the build.
