augie got a reaction from mtaylor in US Brig Syren by Augie - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Did I ever tell you the story Grant, about the ancient craftsman who made brass doors for the castle? One day while polishing the almost finished door, his apprentice asked "How do you know when it's finished"? He answered --- 'It's never finished, someone just comes and takes it away'.

So you catch 1:70 scale fish using those balls?
These details are making her look spectacular!

augie got a reaction from Salty Sea Dog in 18th Century Longboat by Shaz (Robbyn) - FINISHED - Model Shipways
That's an old trick. That roll of making tape has an 18" diameter .
Robbyn --- that fuzziness on the basswood can be problematic. Hope you have better luck than I did. I did try to sand the edges as I went along but it's hard to get it perfect.

You are so right about that finish line Augie. Just when you think you've got the last few steps lined up, something else rears its head and demands to be included before you can say "finished". We just have to keep telling ourselves, it's all about the journey! Who knows, we may even convince ourselves.

With Frank getting back on his feet and Sjors turning his attention to the Spanish fleet, I thought it would be a good time for a small update with some long promised photos.
The main and fore lower yards have been completed with the exception of the braces and sheets as I would surely entangle myself if those were in place. The spaghetti all over the deck are those ropes ready to be deployed later.
The main and fore topsail yards have been pinned in place and are ready to be rigged. We'll set the rigging spiders loose after celebrating the Memorial Day holiday here in the US.
I gotta tell ya that this rigging is a slow process but I haven't had so much fun since........planking......or was it coppering?

augie reacted to Piet in Hr. Ms. O 19 1938 by Piet - FINISHED - scale 1:50 - submarine of the Royal Navy Netherlands in service 1939 - 1945
Hello all,
Well, I drew up a bunch of frames for the deck structure and cut them out and glued them to a 1/4 inch poplar board. Then I proceeded to cut them all out and started to final fit them to the hull.
I also thank Freek for Fred Huygen's website and I was able to get in touch with him. I asked him if he has any drawings for the little dingy and lo and behold he just happen to have the lines drawings and the measurements. Now it's just a matter of translating all that in a wooden model. That in itself will be a challenge because of the size, tiny.
Okay, here are two pics of the hull with most of the deck frames temporarily placed on top of the hull at their proper locations. I need to make about a dozen more though. So far it's looking okay.
The deck frame bulkheads are temporarily placed on top of the hull looking from the stern.
The deck frame bulkheads are temporarily placed on top of the hull looking from the bow.
That piece of wood between the steel angle and the hull is place the hull at right angles to the build board.
Cheers,

Augie and Grant, thank you both very much, but I'd keep an eye on a certain Dutchman while I'm away... I think he's added some contraband ammo to his build....
Wayne, aside from heaving lines and mooring ropes, pretty much everything else is steel wire rope (cable). Although I'm pretty sure I can still manage the odd short splice, it is a little easier working on the real thing.

Evening folks, finished up with some of the deck heads so decided I woudl throw up an update before moving on to other things.
I so far have done the Poop Deck Bulkhead, the Forward Cubbridge Head and the Great Cabin
Nothing really spectacular as far as techniques here, I just made sure to do what I did for the rest of the ship in order to maintain consistency. I used the Ebony wood putty for caulking and used a dental pick and walnut putty for treenails. For the doors I used the eyebolts with the kit bent at an angle for the door handles, and pactra trim tape cut in half for the door hinges. I followed Chuck's tip for creating bolt heads and whalla - we have doors!

Once everything was affixed I went over it with Formby's Tung Oil Finish. It really helped to bring out the color and clean up some of the lines on it. I will probobly do another coat once this is dry to deepen it a little but.
So, while this dries I am off to something else wonderful and funatstic!!
Thanks all for stopping in
Enjoy!!!

Crow's nest...
Three walnut strips 1x3 mm rounded by bender then glued together...
There would be four crow's nests in different scales...

Can't wait to see how this repair works out. I'm betting on great!

Ouch Mobbsie!!! I don't like the sound of that. But I do hope you left a tiny speck of blood behind - sort of like an Artist's signature - just to show how much of you went into this build.
Hope it heals quickly my friend and that you're back to full speed in no time.

Andy, I think she's coming together just beautifully. You see her everyday (when you're home) and the progress seems to just inch along. But we here see the results less often and the progress is ----- spectacular. Trust me.

I agree Popeye. Nothing like ending the day with a cold root beer, the smell of saw dust, and beautiful lines of a ship in progress.

Just catching up with this one, Meredith - you've made a great start.
By the way, how do you currently hang up your washing with all your pegs 'otherwise engaged'?

So when the cat is away all the mice move up? Something about that doesn't sound quite right. Might have depended on who was Admiral.
