Welcome back Andy. Hmmmm....... Sailors and hotel bars.............from my experience, I guess it will take a couple of days for you to dry out before you'll be under the legal limit to work on the build!

Tough one, David.  Step away for whatever time is needed and cool down.
Bending sometimes has to be done in several stages soaking and drying as you go.  TMC is right in that solid wood would be better than ply.  But I think the real problem is that the planking was attached before you bent the bulwark......and CA was probably not the best choice.  One it sets, it's very brittle.  Wood glue would have softened a bit.

Trying a repair as suggested by Robbyn is worth a shot as is ordering some replacement wood in case you need a total do-over.  All of us here know how discouraging this can be.  But you will overcome this.

    Robbyn,

Noting your dissatisfaction with the basswood, and that you have only done a couple of planks, one option might be to pause, take off the existing basswood planks and order some boxwood replacements from Jeff at Hobbymill. While I agree that it seems a double whammy after you've paid for the kit, you must remember that ME has built the kit to a price point. At least if you replace the basswood with boxwood you will have a timber that you will enjoy working with and will be satisfied with the result, rather than being frustrated and unhappy. And after all, Chuck's prototype was built with boxwood. This is what I'll be doing before starting this kit anyway.

Save your money Sherry.  Here at the shipyard, progress is not necessarily our most important product.  Just spent about 6 hours rigging my topsail buntlines only to discover I used the wrong diameter line.  Took a lot less time to 'de-rig'    .  Now I get to do them again.

Is this a great hobby or not?

    Good morning all,

Hello Augie, Johann and Daniel, thanks for looking in and for the kind words.

as advised, I am posting some more pictures related to the tower searchlight construction.

    Here goes:

Some scale plans of the 160cm searchlight taken from the "Anatomy of the ship - Bismarck".

Due to the fact that I shall be needing 5 of these assemblies, I made a simple cardboard jig, to ensure the same measurements for both the support arms and the support foot.

The first set of support arms needed for the searchlight housing.

The support duckfoot, which supports both the arms and the searchlight housing.

Shall be posting more pictures next week.

Looking great, Augie - I like the natural wood finish on the spars - a nice choice, which I might imitate myself when I get to the Syren (in about a year's time!)...

Hi Robbyn - Yeh - she's a dainty lil thing, but once you get the planking done you will be surprised how solid it will feel.

As for the others advice about the top of the stem piece, either pin it or wait until you break it off and leave it until later to put it back on.( thats what I did )

I pre-stretch all of my rigging line Robbyn.  Some folks do it by hanging it with some weight attached and just leaving it sit for a while.  That works fine but it's too much fun for my cat.  So I just roll out about 8 feet, clamp it at one end to a long table, pull hard and clamp the other end.  I let it sit overnight then I cut and wax it.  I try to see what I'm doing the next few days and stay ahead of it so I always have pre-stretched stuff when I need it ----- kind of like a Henry Ford assembly line.  I'm not sure if any of this is technically 'correct' but it works for me.  Perhaps some others with more experience (and no cats) will chime in here.

You guys are a hoot! I love the excitement that comes from just knowing someone is watching and cheering, and correcting when necessary (often).

Randy, honestly, it is a bit nerve wracking knowing Chuck can peek in at any time . Does add a certain stress level to the build. I am just so hoping I can take the things I learned from the SF and put them to work here. The challenge this time is to only have to do the planking ONCE instead of 3 times lol.

Thanks Augie. No cats indoors so I will go down to the laundry room and "hang some weights from the ceiling" to stretch the rope when it gets here.

Tim...have plans for a real shipyard...and am hoping that Brynes saw is on its way...Then you have me...well...after the Syren, then off to the dark side. Although I do have my eyes on 3 other kits atm...Occre Endeavour Bark, Euro Model Mordaunt, and MS Flying fish. But, there is no rule that says I cant do kits and scratch at the same time!!!

I plan to be doing this until the day I die, and don't have plans for that happening any time soon, so I can dream BIG!!

Robbyn-  I think you'll like the Morope.  I got the idea from Frank (riverboat) and have used it on the thicker lines for my build.  The black is nice but the beige is really nice in appearance.  It stretches quite a bit so I pre-stretch it.   Even with that it still stretches more but it's not a problem --- in fact I think it helps maintain proper tension.

One caution-  make sure you apply some thin CA to where you are going to cut it or it will unravel at the speed of light.

Harley, I just picked up a can of Minwax wood conditioner at the hardware store...was told by Chuck and others that is works like a charm; especially, on wood like basswood. It keeps the wood from looking blotchy when you add paint or stain.

I do tend to draw a bit of a crowd for some reason.
I think it is my unsinkable Molly Brown attitude. When I screw up...which I do often...I just tear it apart and do it again and don't allow those setbacks to ruin my fun. And I LOVE the learning curve here...keeps me working on things. Even my SF which is on hold waiting for a morope order is not going to get me down. I will redo the rigging and get her finished before the summer is over!!!
Jan, you will find wherever Sjors is, there is always popcorn. And when Mark is around as well, the bar is usually open!
