Hello. This is the start of my Niagara rebuild As some of you know I built the Niagara a few years ago. Unfortunately the finished model was badly damaged in a house move. So rather than repair I purchased a new kit in Dec 2011 and started again. Progress has been slow for a number of reasons but I am pleased to be back in the Niagara Club I will post pictures of progress to date over Easter. Regards Ken

Note to Derek I bought my Niagara from Model Shipways in the US using debit card Once it is on its way you get a UPS or FedEx tracking number so I could watch it winging its way across the Pacific. There is a thread running on ME pricing and the owner of ME is a member here. So you could get in touch with them and get a quote It would be good because I dont think we have a member of the Niagara Club in the UK Regards Ken

Hi Mainstay I think I may be responsible for starting the Niagara Club !!. It is intended as humour but it is real in that we do watch out for each other and help wherever we can. Having said that you are most welcome to join As Rich said the best thing you can do is start you own build log Regards Ken

Hello Jimmers Any number of our members are building trawlers, fishing boats and tugs. So check the finished and ongoing build logs. Then if you go ahead start your own build log. Regarding instructions. Those written in English are usually easier to follow than those translated from another language

Hello Mike Latina kits seem to be at the lower end of the scale when it comes to quality of material and clarity of instructions. Existing build logs can help you overcome the kits shortcomings. But is very much a case with kits that you get what you pay for Regards Ken

Danish/tung oil - first timer
kenr replied to petehay's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Hi Pete Oil will not darken the wood It should just lift and brighten the colour I would not cover paint with oil. You should use a small paint brush and apply it carefully to the area you want to oil So oil or matte varnish will darken the least but if you are going to use stain have a look at a light colour like Baltic Pine but not Mahogany Hope this helps Regards Ken -
Stain for deck?
kenr replied to Rich_engr's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Hi Rich i will be interested to see what you do. Generally decks are quite light in colour given all the cleaning they are subject to. So i am going to matte varnish ( not colour it) only, Regards Ken -
Danish/tung oil - first timer
kenr replied to petehay's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Hi Pete Your options are Danish / Tung Oil or wood stain. Whichever option you choose, test on scrap wood first Regards Ken -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
