A small update and a "Why-have-I-been-so-slow" excuse.
Hello all. Since August I started feeling a nasty pain in my left thumb that prevented me from doing almost anything with my left hand. Shortly after, I started developing a "trigger finger" condition in my right index.
I tried different alternative options before undergoing surgery, but nothing worked. I wasn't able even to hold my guitar, much less playing it. My chops went downhill terribly. So I decided there was nothing else to do but surgery. I had it on Sept. 17th.
Here the scars barely noticeable now
I wasn't able to do many things during the recovery time, and my mood went to floor level.
I finally and slowly began working again in my guitar and also in my ship. Here is a small update on my build.
Here is a general view. Shrouds in the mizzen mast are completed, as well as those in the lower main. 5 pairs still to go.
Some details of the ongoing rigging. I am following strictly the instructions order. Not sure how wise this ultimately be
This were very difficult to make,,,
And my super high tech jig to make coils
Result:
Thank you all for visiting. I feel I'm on track again!!!
Best regards!

The real world tends to intrude rudely. I'm merely following along and I'm not in a rush - this is your leisure time! Again, thanks for sharing!
Regarding your machine tools, I love there is a domain in machining/metal work where no one complains about the small size of their equipment.
I believe you mentioned being drawn to the challenge of small-scale modelling (and the ease of storage/display).
I'm curious: what drew you to machining in such a small scale? Have you always worked at such small scale?

Notes from 8/6/2009
Everything is built: nothing but rigging left. Although, I am still trying to build a ship’s boat by scratch. Two attempts have left me with nothing I would want to show off. I will try one more time. If after this third attempt and the ship’s boat does not look good I will go with the kit supplied plastic/ wood boats.
I have all the standing rigging on the bowsprit, all the forestay on the fore mast except for the fore topgallant stays, the ten shrouds on the fore mast, and one fore stay on the main mast attached.
A thought occurred to me at this point: There are 10 shrouds each side on the fore mast, the main mast will have 12 shrouds each side and the mizzen mast 6 shrouds each side. I started thinking: that’s going to be a lot of ratlines. . . a lot of ratline knots. So I multiplied shrouds by ratlines, added up those from each mast and came up with 3110 knots. The plan—when the time comes—is to tie 100 knots a day for 31 days. We will see. Rigging really is my favorite part. I have decided to add sails; this requires 96 additional blocks tied to masts, yards and stays.

I'd love to get one of those but unfortunately they come up very rarely on the Lidl website...☹️ And I can't find anyone else in the UK that sells them.

fnick reacted to Dan Vadas in 2-6-6-4 "Bulgar" Steam Locomotive by Dan Vadas - Modelik - 1:25 - CARD - FINISHED
Now I fitted the crank pins to all the larger wheels. I've glued them in with PVA, so I cut a groove in the pin with a Xacto knife. This stops the brass pin from slipping :
I fitted the six axles. They are all a nice tight "push-in" fit and shouldn't move again. However I filed out the hole for the Driving wheel axle so it COULD turn - once the cranks are installed both sides will then turn in unison :
Now it's on to the main brakes, quite a big job. Here are the parts for one of the 12 brake shoes. I've glued the inner pads on, but I may have to remove them again later (easily done with a single-edge razor blade) if there isn't enough clearance to the wheel flange. I had to do this on the bogie's brakes, and Stephan also found out that it was necessary on his model. We'll see :
I used a 1mm wire to keep everything aligned while gluing the pieces together :
All done. The contact surfaces will be cleaned up as I fit each assembly, they will need to be sanded to get clearance to the wheel rim :
On to the brake control arms. All the parts are prepared ready for fitting together :
Once again a simple jig made accurate assembly easier :
That's it for now. I'll move on to fitting the brake assemblies to the main frame next.
Cheers, Danny

The lower shrouds are now attached to the main mast. I made things more difficult than I should have, but tying the shrouds on proved easier than anticipated and they turned out quite acceptably.. The photos give an idea how they were done. Once the shrouds are attached to the deadeyes and made taut, the respective loops should line up quite nicely.

fnick reacted to marktiedens in HMS Vanguard by marktiedens - Model Shipways - scale 1:72
I`ve decided to add a little extra to the capstans. First,I added some "teeth" to the bottom of the capstans & made some pawls along with the raised platforms. Second, since a small portion of the lower deck can be seen I added an extension plus a base to the bottom of the capstan. This was only done to the forward one as the aft opening is blocked by a portion of the keel former - it would not be visible anyway. Sorry about the not so perfect pictures.
cheers,Mark

And the other side. Note most of this will not be visible on from looking inside the side doors. There are 3 elevators, the AOTS intrepid state there are two cylinders per hoist (I can find no photos of this, but I have used cut off big bore barrels. There is also supposed to be lift wells which would be overcapitalising. I intend to have the side lift down and the two centre ones up.

Some fiddly work done - made up the capstans, some of the bitts, gratings, & ladders. I glued the ladders to the gratings so I could better determine where to put the stanchions for the handrail ropes - it would otherwise be difficult to install them with the gratings in place. I made half-lap joints for the coamings. No finish has been put on these assemblies yet - I try to make up as many of the sub-assemblies as I can before applying a finish. The fewer times I open the can of poly, the less likely it will dry up in the can. Some of the plan sheets show a base for the capstans & some don`t,so I think I will add them - I don`t think they would sit directly on the deck planks. The ladder parts are nicely made - not too thick & clunky looking like most kit ladders.

fnick reacted to vulcanbomber in HMS Pegasus by vulcanbomber - Amati/Victory Models - 1/64
Thanks John, I'm enjoying this mini scratch build!
Some more progress. A good clean up of the inside with my trusty Dremel and the interior looked a lot neater.
Floor boards and platform installed and risers fitted.
Yesterday I made the bow platform and cockpit seat back and fitted the transom. Today I fitted them to the Pinnace, along with the seat and thwarts.
I still need to score the locker in the seat and add the hinges and I am cutting a toothpick down to make the stanchions for under the thwarts.

Thanks for looking in John and B.E.
My wood strips arrived yesterday. (Well, they actually arrived a couple of days earlier, but whoever took them in forgot to tell me!!). I chose Maple, Pear, and Cherry.
Maple is top, Pear is middle and Cherry bottom.
I cut a 3mm strip of Maple in half down the length and then cut it into strips for the 'ribs'.
After boiling them in a saucepan to make them pliable, I bent them over the plug and held the ends down with rubber bands and left overnight for them to dry and set into shape. I also used some clothes pegs held down with rubber bands (not shown) at the stern to get the reverse curve shape.
This is the result after completely dry and with the pegs removed
Next I put a piece of cling film over the top part of the plug to stop anything sticking to it, leaving the bottom part free of cling film to stick the long ends of the ribs to to hold them in position while it is planked.
I then left it to set overnight. Next day I made a cardboard template of the keel, getting a good fit before cutting a keel out of a some walnut from the parts sheet of Pegasus (actually the edge of cannon carriages sheet where it was just big enough!)
Now keel is glued into place
So, this is where I am at now. Next step: the hull planking.

fnick reacted to marktiedens in HMS Vanguard by marktiedens - Model Shipways - scale 1:72
Starting work on the ship,I first glued the 2 halves of the bulkhead former together & glued the stem & keel in place. Next, all the bulkheads were removed from the plywood sheets & test fitted along with the lowest gun deck, which serves as a good stiffener. Everything is dry fitted for now to see how everything lines up. Everything fit together nicely with only a few swipes with a file in a few spots. Sighting down the sides,I don`t see any bumps or dips in the edges of the bulkheads, which is a first for me! I must say the laser cutting seems to be spot on everywhere & even the edges are only a light brown, instead of burned black - I am very impressed with the kit so far.

fnick reacted to mtaylor in La Belle Poule 1765 by mtaylor - Scale 1:64 - POB - French Frigate from ANCRE plans
Thanks Carl. I found one who built it as basically a sub-assembly off ship. I'm getting a grasp of this so when I get to that point, I'll have a starting point.
As for updates.... wood stabilized overnight, and so I cut it... 16 bulkheads. I dry fitted them and added a "security" beam across the top. On the morrow, I'll start getting them fixed into place with braces and adding a few boards to guide me in filling in the bow and stern. I may also do the center section also. Any way, here's pics of the day's efforts. Not 100% straight or even as not glued nor properly aligned.

Continuation of the construction of the floating warehouse.
Next level will begin. The larger open place, in the middle, will be the amphitheater, a place to care for the sick and wounded..
One of the goals, in this small project... is to limit at the minimum the decks planking to maximize the interior view.

fnick reacted to mtaylor in La Belle Poule 1765 by mtaylor - Scale 1:64 - POB - French Frigate from ANCRE plans
Update, finally. I've managed to do the false keel in one piece. Thank heavens for small favors on that one. I've also cut out the all bulkheads, managed to make the keel, stem, and sternpost. In the photos, are the false keel with the bulkheads simply fitted. I'm having a few "minor" issues with the framing bits breaking off but I'm working on a solution. As it is, 6 maybe 7 need to come off anyway due to being in the way of the gunports. I will say that I'm glad I'm doing her in 1:48 but 1:64. She's still a big girl.
As for the framing bits breaking, I think I had too much "heat" with the laser and I've have some ideas which is the next couple of days project. I do need to cut "false" frame ends because like pointed out, many will get off for the ports especially the forward 6 bulkheads. I'll either cut new bulkheads (after modifying the framing bits or fix what I have. I'm hoping fixing works better rather than having to order more wood.
Anyway, here's photos. So until next time...

Another update - the mizzen lateen yard is now in place & the sail rigged. The kit provided black beads for the parrels, but I decided to use some bronze colored ones from the bead store. The main topgallant backstays are now done also - I had to wait until now to do all the topgallant backstays so I could get my hands in to the belaying points for all the other lines.
