    Popeye,

No wonder you're having problems - trying to model weari8ng red socks - it just won't work, mate.  Try changing to black socks or sandals!

Seriously though, I have absolutely no doubt that you'll end up with  a fine model.

thanks Mark.......When I got the kit,  it was duly noted that there were parts missing.........so it was orphaned from the get-go.  since all the major hull part are here.......heck,  I might do well to build it and have fun with it          I know what your saying though,  I'm hoping that someone who has built this kit before chimes in and tells me how their build went.  I'm interested to see if they found the same problem.
the parts that are missing equals one complete part's panel,  so this tells me that someone got shorted with their kit.   the hull will come out,  but I'm finding the same problem with the port side,  so I'm thinking that the first two ribs are off in dementions towards the bottom of the hull.   the upper dementions are ok.......or I wouldn't have been able to plank the bulwarks and fore cabin.

I have three planks on her at this point,  and it's beginning to ocurr again......the plank wants to pull away from the rib.  I'm doing this without the use of joggers,  and with tapering the plank,  I can steer the planking as to where I want it to go.........I can achieve the curvature needed to follow the bow rabbit.  as long as I keep the start of the plank perpendicular to the rabbit,  I can compensate the run.

nawwww!  I can't throw it out now.........what fun would that be?  true.......my inventory would look all the better for it......but I would end up feeling like I've forsaken it........a kit is a terrible thing to waste

I'll whip this bad boy in shape!   I'm one of those thick headed yankees.......never could figure that out.......we are yankees.........but we have red sox........we're suppose to hate the yankees.  I'm not a sports fan.....I'm doing America's REAL past time right here!

Greetings, Salutations and Hello Happy Modelers!

Work has continued on all fronts, the Mayflower included.  So far this is my favorite build of the three - I think it is because things are clicking for the most part and it is moving along.

I have started putting the posts and rails in and it is beginning to look more like the Mayflower (always nice with some of those goal moments where things begin to change the look and feel of the ship - I like it!).

I used Swiss Pear for the posts to give it some color and a slightly dark compliment to the rest of the ship.  The same wood and tint used on the hatches and the grates which help tie it all together.

The foredeck is together and ready to go and posts have begun getting installed along the main deck.  Tedius, but each one looks a bit better

Had a little bit of stress damage on the foredeck bulkhead, but that will be filled and sanded out with little issue so not to worried about it.

Once all of the posts and rails are in I will be sanding it with the same 10:2ish ratio of natural to golden oak to blend all the woods together.

Oh - here are the pics!

Posts started getting installed,  I used a scrap piece of lumber to get the spacing.  The foredeck is a little of but i got it right later.  Luckily it isn't SO far off that it jumps out at you, it still looks good and "works" but to me it was a DERNIT!!!  moment.    A thin piece of basswood is used arond the edges of the inside deck which not only acts as waterways but also hides those oopsie not so nice cuts... so, wait, what not so nice cuts - can't see em; they don't exist!!

Railings are up,  spaced 1/8 inch off the side - again using scrap lumber to maintain the spacing all around.

Started working the main deck posts and will continue around and rail them. Then sand, finish and stain everything to blend it all together =)

Hello All - thanks for stopping by and for the kind words!

@Augie: Thank you sir.  I like the color over the pear.  I did it on the hatches and it is dark enough to stain the bass and boxwood nicely but light enough to "enhance" the pear without taking color out or tinting it too much.

@Russ: Thanks!  They are time consuming and oh so monotonous which so far is the only part of the hobby I struggle with a lot and tend to slow down a bit.  But, trudging through I am!!

@Popeye: Thank you!  I did the darker stain on the Phantom and it just struck me as too dark for my tastes, so after playing with colors I came up with this. I like the lighter color although on future boats I will be working to vary a bit so all of my boats don't look the same.  I will be doing a second plank on her,  I most likely will only second plank down to the wales  below the cannon doors.  The bottom of the hull is painted so am going to save material and just smooth the heck out of it and paint it up =)   I will have to blend the lowest level of planking a bit to make it look right, but I think I can pull it off.

The stanchions are still in the works, as I mentioned above they are quite monotonous so I switched over the willie a bit to break from it but will be getting back to it very shortly!

    - Enjoy!

    Adam:
If I were to use planking battens (I do not), I would go for some square stock, say about 1/16". Those planks you are using look awfully wide for this sort of thing.

You want to have maybe 4-6 strakes of planking in each belt. For instance, if you want to have 20 strakes of planking per side, you would want 5 belts. The belts will contract as you approach the bow and may widen out a bit as you approach the stern. It is easier to see this with the square battens rather than the wider planks.

You need to decide what will be the median width of the planks in the midsection. Then measure that bulkhead to see how much distance you have to cover. I like to use some masking tape to make that measurement. Take the distance and divide it by the median plank width and that is how many planks you want crossing each bulkhead. Then divide the number planks into equal sections to get your planking belts.

I am not sure how much you want to hear about planking since everyone tends to have their own method with which they are comfortable. I do a lot of spiling and tapering in my planking, but that is not everyone's cup of tea.

I can't say I have done a great deal on this one, but am trying to move it forward, even if but a little bit.

Sadly - we had a small incident.  While moving something on the desk I bumped the Willie and down it went.   It caught the foot of my desk just right so it spun and landed keel side - which was good, didn't snap the cutwater.  Did however damage the keel.   So had to do a bit of repair work before moving along.  Replaced the section of damaged keel and will fill - sand - shape once the glue dries.

Once that was attached I finished adding the headrails and getting them into place.

Again - not a huge jump in progress as they are just glued into place,  but once completely dry will sand and shape them a bit more and get them blended into the hull.

    The shrouds are re-done…...
It's not perfect on the seizing and it need some cutting on the wires but I let it stay this way.
I see the Mirage as a learning build for the rigging of the San Ildefonso.
I can not do the foremast yet because I need some chains and deadeyes because they are broken.
For the San Ildefonso I also need chains for the deadeyes.
The ones that are provide by OcCre are just terrible so I have to order new ones.
    But that is for later.
So the San Ildefonso is on the shelf again.
When I go further at her I have to ships at the same time to do the rigging.
Now I can switch a little.
Rigging the Mirage and making the masts for the San Ildefonso.
And of course a few pictures…….
Tomorrow I can start on the ratlines….a few of them !

    Trucks

I gave a bit of thought on the easiest way to make the Trucks (wheels) without resorting to using dowel - the grain would run the wrong way, although at this scale it would be difficult to pick the difference.

The Trucks are 4" thick, the Hind Trucks are 10.5" in diameter and the Fore Trucks are 12" diameter. On larger guns they were made from four pieces of timber with the grain running crosswise to each other and bolted together, but a 6-pounder's trucks were made from one solid piece.

I started off by cutting a strip of timber a little wider than the required diameter. I set up a simple stopper jig on my mill vice by CA'ing a couple of pieces of scrap to the top and drilling the 2mm centre hole. Then I cut the piece off square on the table saw.

To hold the piece into the lathe for turning the outside diameter I used a spare mandrel from my Dremel accessories. The screw was only 1.7mm, so I turned up a small brass sleeve to give a snug fit to the hole. When tightened it held the piece of timber beautifully.

I found it difficult to remove the truck from the mandrel, so I drilled a slightly smaller hole than the truck in a piece of scrap. By placing the piece over the hole I could easily remove it by pushing it into the hole :

There was a burr on one side of each piece after turning it, so to hold the rather awkward round piece without damaging it while sanding I drilled another hole in my piece of scrap which was slightly larger than the diameter of the truck and a bit less than it's thickness. The piece protrudes slightly from this hole, and a couple of wipes with a sanding stick soon removes the burr :

A view of the progress so far. The carriage sits on top of a 5 cent piece :
