  1. Thanks Frank, this fits under "work smarter not harder"
  2. Thanks Augie, that's what I have been doing so far. Cheers, Harley
  3. I am working on the Syren's longboat using the lift method as described in the instructions. It's going OK. I would appreciate any advise or hints you folks can offer particularly shaping the inside. Thanks, Harley
  4. Inspirational work of art. Thanks for such a comprehensive log. I am about to start the Syren's longboat. Cheers, Harley
  5. Truly inspirational while daunting at the same time. Prime examples for us relative beginners. Cheers, Harley
  6. This afternoon I was working on the starboard hammock netting. Everything was going smoothly, I was in the groove. A happy time. Then I reached for the glue bottle and as I brought the bottle past the Syren's bow with my eyes on the target rather where my hand was moving, my hand caught the bow below the figure head. The ship launched out of the construction cradle and flipped away from me landing upside down about eight inches away. All my shocked little eyes could see was copper plates. Fortunately my heart surgeon did a great job last year so I was alright. I took a deep breath and gently returned the brig to the construction cradle. After checking everything, the only damage was the port side stern chaser had broken loose, an easy fix. All the other details are intact, thank goodness. I guess the little brig is built strong. I will definitely be more careful in the future. Cheers, Harley
  7. Would the hammock cranes on the Brig Syren been covered? Thanks, Harley
  8. I am in the process of installing the hammock nettings and have found this to be quite a challenge. For those other relative beginners who don't have access to Chuck Passaro's great instructions for the U.S. Brig Syren , I'd like to offer some thoughts. Chuck suggested using a piece of cardboard as a background to save your eyes, probably the best suggestion in this Chapter. The attached pictures (sorry, from my phone) demonstrate using white paper. I laced the inboard top of the net first. I am using a smooth piece of wood to give the net some temporary shape and keep the outboard portion of the net separated from the inboard portion. So far, I have only started over once. Now I see that I missed a hinge on one of the gun port lids-- Patience, Harley
  9. Finished Chapter 13 except for the deck eyebolts. Cap rail details next. Have been experimenting with cotton crochet which seems easier to work with than the supplied material. I wish I would have learned about this before I did the carronade tackle. Cheers, Harley
  10. I began this project in August 2012. I'm in the process of completing the Deck Fittings, Chapter 13. I am attempting to keep the colors true to the ship's early service life. The deck would have been holy stoned every morning so I am keeping it lighter than the deck fittings. I find positioning the fittings square and in proper relationship to other portions of the model to be a bit of a challenge. I have to learn to accept my own experience level. Moderators, please forgive entering this as a build log if it doesn't fit the requirements , it seemed like the best choice. Cheers, Harley
  11. I know you are being inundated with requests for the instructions but please accept one more at your convenience. Thanks, your work sets a high standard. Thanks, Harley
  12. What kind of wood conditioner are you using Robbyn? Will watch your progress on this project with great interest. Cheers, Harley
  13. Thank you for the great pictures. How do you get the lines to lay flat? Cheers, Harley
  14. After many years out of ship model building at a basic skill level, I am working on MS Syren. I am installing the carronades. I have tried different methods to duplicate the setup that Chuck shows in his instructions but have not been able to get acceptable results. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harley
  15. Does anyone know of commercial carronades that would fit the MS Syren better? TKS
