  1. Thanks for the tutorial. I wish I would have seen this before I did my ME Syren deadeyes with the kit's wire. Everything is magnatized, drive me nuts!
  2. Just a thought but, for instance, if top gallant and/or royals were going to be furled, the yards might be braced up to take the wind (load) off the sails and thusly be easier for the top men to furl the sails. I don't how the yards would be braced after the sails were furled. An interesting topic.
  3. This is more of a progress report than a build log. I am following Chuck's instruction sequence and methods so the masts are stepped to finish Chapter 17. The phone camera seems to distort the rake angle a bit. It looks better in person. The only change from the kit materials is using Syren Company's blocks since they became available. I also switched from CA to Neutral ph Adhesive to secure lines during this phase of construction. Building the Syren has been a great learning experience. MSW is an invaluable asset. Standing rigging is next. Cheers, Harley
  4. Thanks Jay, simple and clear. Regards, Harley
  5. Good Morning Sam, I did not get instructions just a DVD. I'll give them a call. Best, Harley
  6. Sam, I tried sizing last night without success. As you say, it doesn't rotate properly. I put it back in the box until I have some time to play or someone else comes up with a good application. Maybe mobbsie an bail us out. Deep breath, patience--
  7. src, would you please give me an idea how you are using the Danvise. I'm not familiar with fly tying and the Danvise doesn't seem to have the attachments shown in the video posted in this topic. Thanks, Harley
  8. Jaager, thanks for the post on Neutral ph Adhesive. I purchased a bottle and it works well so far. Dries with no shine and seems to have no odor.
  9. Thanks for the post and video. It will be a great help with my Syren project. Regards, Harley
  10. Mobbsie, please advise which vise/attachments you are using in your tutorial which is very well done. Thanks, Harley
  11. Welcome to the Syren group. I am sure you will enjoy this project. It's a great kit with tons of support here on MSW
  12. Truly inspiring Rusty, I can see a Confederacy in my future, thanks for the log
  13. Thanks for some very interesting guidelines. Why is CA such a transgression when rigging? I found a clear version of Elmer's that works pretty well. I'm building the masts for my Syren so any rigging hints are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harley
  14. I am working on the masts. Keeping the flat surfaces square is a challenge. I am following the instruction manual sequence for the most part. I masked the rings on the foremast to paint the "iron" rings. I am not sure if that was worth the time. The masts are just resting on the ship not secured. I am painting the tops now, blocks and deadeyes come next.
  15. Chapter 17 is finished. This is my first rigging work besides the carronades. The masts are next. I'll take the time to review more builder's logs and hit the books before beginning. I enjoy the research and planning. Cheers, Harley
  16. Thanks Frankie, I just went ahead and jumped into the project and I think it looks OK. This is my first endeavor at this level.
  17. Nice work on securing the carronades Rich, that is a unique addition. Cheers, Harley
  18. I am working on the rigging of the bowsprit of the MS brig Syren. Can someone please advise how the lashings between the hearts are secured or terminated. I have checked through this forum and a number of publications but I can't find anything showing how the lashings finish. I would like to complete this as accurately as possible. Thanks, Harley
  19. Simply great, thanks for sharing the log. Did I miss it or what are the dimensions? Inspirational
  20. I had to do the long boat oars over. The laser cut oars are way too big. I should have checked the plans. The oars seem to fit now. Another learning experience.
  21. First anniversary of laying down the keel for the brig Syren. Just completed the long boat which was an adventure in itself. Thanks to all those who have provided hints, advise, and encouragement to those of us who are on the low end of the learning curve. Now to finish the sweeps and tie down the long boat and onto the bowsprit. Cheers, Harley
  22. I'm glad to see someone else going the paint job like the original, I was getting lonesome. Enjoy
  23. Can anyone do a comparison of this kit to the Syren brig kit? Thanks, Harley
  24. Congratulations, thanks for providing such a wonderful example of the art for us to strive to achieve. Cheers, Harley
  25. Thanks Frank, this fits under "work smarter not harder"
