Thanks for the tutorial. I wish I would have seen this before I did my ME Syren deadeyes with the kit's wire. Everything is magnatized, drive me nuts!

Should all spars be aligned in the same direction?
Tigerdvr replied to Modeler12's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Just a thought but, for instance, if top gallant and/or royals were going to be furled, the yards might be braced up to take the wind (load) off the sails and thusly be easier for the top men to furl the sails. I don't how the yards would be braced after the sails were furled. An interesting topic. -
This is more of a progress report than a build log. I am following Chuck's instruction sequence and methods so the masts are stepped to finish Chapter 17. The phone camera seems to distort the rake angle a bit. It looks better in person. The only change from the kit materials is using Syren Company's blocks since they became available. I also switched from CA to Neutral ph Adhesive to secure lines during this phase of construction. Building the Syren has been a great learning experience. MSW is an invaluable asset. Standing rigging is next. Cheers, Harley

Seizing or whipping a line. Here is how I have done it.

Thanks Jay, simple and clear. Regards, Harley -
Good Morning Sam, I did not get instructions just a DVD. I'll give them a call. Best, Harley

Sam, I tried sizing last night without success. As you say, it doesn't rotate properly. I put it back in the box until I have some time to play or someone else comes up with a good application. Maybe mobbsie an bail us out. Deep breath, patience--

src, would you please give me an idea how you are using the Danvise. I'm not familiar with fly tying and the Danvise doesn't seem to have the attachments shown in the video posted in this topic. Thanks, Harley

Best glue for rigging: CA & GS-Hypo
Tigerdvr replied to Beef Wellington's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Jaager, thanks for the post on Neutral ph Adhesive. I purchased a bottle and it works well so far. Dries with no shine and seems to have no odor. -
Mobbsie, please advise which vise/attachments you are using in your tutorial which is very well done. Thanks, Harley

Thanks for some very interesting guidelines. Why is CA such a transgression when rigging? I found a clear version of Elmer's that works pretty well. I'm building the masts for my Syren so any rigging hints are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harley

I am working on the masts. Keeping the flat surfaces square is a challenge. I am following the instruction manual sequence for the most part. I masked the rings on the foremast to paint the "iron" rings. I am not sure if that was worth the time. The masts are just resting on the ship not secured. I am painting the tops now, blocks and deadeyes come next.

Lashings on bobstays & bowsprit shrouds etc.
Tigerdvr replied to Tigerdvr's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Thanks Frankie, I just went ahead and jumped into the project and I think it looks OK. This is my first endeavor at this level. -
I am working on the rigging of the bowsprit of the MS brig Syren. Can someone please advise how the lashings between the hearts are secured or terminated. I have checked through this forum and a number of publications but I can't find anything showing how the lashings finish. I would like to complete this as accurately as possible. Thanks, Harley

First anniversary of laying down the keel for the brig Syren. Just completed the long boat which was an adventure in itself. Thanks to all those who have provided hints, advise, and encouragement to those of us who are on the low end of the learning curve. Now to finish the sweeps and tie down the long boat and onto the bowsprit. Cheers, Harley

Can anyone do a comparison of this kit to the Syren brig kit? Thanks, Harley
