I've spent some time on the American Eagle Schooner out of Rockland. Wonderful experience. Those schooners are something special. Your Latham is a very strong inspiration to tackle the kit. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Harley

You couldn't turn a hull over for planking. If your ship's stem and stern were strong enough you could adjust the fore and aft clamps to work on the deck for instance. I just stick some pieces of firm Styrofoam under the side I want elevated to get a slant as needed. Harley

I've been using mine for a couple of years now. Big enough to easily handle the ME Confederacy. Configuration is very flexible. I've even used some the parts independent of the base. You won't use all the fixtures all the time. The wing nut idea is the way to go. Is it better than what works for you right now? Probably not but I think it's pretty handy and have not been tempted to use anything else since I got it. Cheers, Harley

JMHO but I think the untreated one looks closer to the picture of the real deck. Main battery keeps getting better, thanks for the ruler. hjm

The main battery is really looking good (JMHO). Great pictures too. It would be interesting to occasionally have a ruler alongside the piece being photographed. Cheers, Harley

Enjoying your log. You refer to using medium CA on the stern gun tubs. Are using the CA like a filler? If so, I'm assuming it doesn't attack the plastic. Just up dating my brain about the current plastic/PE/CA items available. It's been a long time since I did a major plastic build but the battleship models available now are tempting. Thanks Kopp Cheers, Harley

Wow, what an education. Your log is a masterpiece fitting the inspirational work on the model. Rookie question, what is a "cross spall" Cheers, Harley

I believe you finally got the hang of it marsalv. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. Us mere mortals have run out of words. Great work with the camera too. Regards, Harley -
How I wish your battle station kit was available. Jeff's Practicum is terrific and a very good read. Thanks very much for sharing it although that makes one want a kit even more! I'm from Milwaukee. We used to go fishing at Pewaukee Lake many years ago. Cheers, Harley

QUICK-FIND INDEXES to BUILD LOGS FOR KITS
Tigerdvr replied to Dan Vadas's topic in - Index of all kits by brand and subject
Greetings Dan, Just tried to use the Index (a great addition BTW). When I select "Wood Ships" or "Small Craft", "Plastic & Resin Models" comes up. I tried it a number of times with the same results. Regards, Harley -
I'm in Chuck, full plank and sails. The Admiral insisted so what choice do I have? Have a great day. Cheers, Harley

Requesting feedback for future MSW Group Projects
Tigerdvr replied to Chuck's topic in Group Projects on Model Ship World
Chuck, sorry if I missed it but would the long boat project be scratch or with a sort of basic kit? I'd like to participate but It's tough for me to pull away from my Confederacy. Thanks for all your efforts to keep this hobby what it an be. Regards, Harley -
Shipped the rudder and worked on the galleries. I screwed up on the upper section of the galleries so I employed a bit of artistic license with the PE trim. Changed the stern finish from stained to black like Yancovitch's beauty. Liked it better that way. I'm glad that this portion is pretty much finished. Cheers, Harley

Work on the stern windows and trim is moving right along. Some adjustment was required to get the gallery window frames to align to an acceptable level. The kit supplies two gallery drops. One fit with little trimming needed. The other one is a disaster. A new drop has been requested from the manufacturer. Being relatively new to PE on wood I was thinking (dangerous) of what adhesive would work best. I had glazed the windows with Microscale Micro Kristal Klear. The instructions on the container refer to using it as an adhesive so I thought I would try it on the PE trim. It is very easy to use, starts drying fairly quick but gives you time to align things. Excess dries clear and invisible. That really helped with the intricate trim pieces. The PE trim pieces are the same color as the wood trim.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
