    Hi Mates,

Thanks for your thoughts and "clicks".
So it is "repaired" - Not B. Hills plastic surgery results (;-(. There are scars), but much cheaper ha ha.What did I learn?

Not to install parts prematurely. Big learning lesson for me. Platform (crowsnest) will stay in the tray for a while. Now, happily, on to the mainmast.

Again thanks so much Mates for your support, and encouraging posts.

    Hi all

Sorry not much work has been done on the Revenge.

I have done the first planking, I have to say it is not my favorite job to do on any build, I seem to have a mental block when it comes to first planking ??.

Any way on to the next job.

    Denis.

Been almost a couple of weeks now so thought I'd keep you all in the loop.

After a little sanding, some steaming, some cursing, more sanding and a little gluing I have finally got the plywood sides on.

This was achieved by first of all clamping it in place to get the position and bulkhead edges correct, I then drilled some holes slightly smaller than the pins through the plywood side into the edge of the bulkheads and pinned it in place. This allowed me to position it correctly without too much moving them around when glued. I then ran a bead of glue along the underside of the deck where it meets the side for added strength.

    Similar findings here Greg.
Played around with both and concluded, I like the look of fixed shot garlands just above the base of the bulwarks and tend to believe that would have been the method used on the SOS..... sticking to it.  lol
    Thanks for the input Mate.

    Hello everybody!
Although I have a lot to do at the hull, I felt to change the register. I started testing how to make ropes and blocks. There're just tests.

Update on the update. I followed Mark's tip and here is the thing "redux".

The planks were very well glued. I was abraid to break the frame if tried too hard to unglue them, so I had to "carve" the planks out.

This fix cost me blood, literally!

    Finished!

Next step: No measures are given for the taper of the bottom of the lower platform.

Thanks for watching, likes and tips!!!

    Progress update.....

Couple of quickie shots after finishing up all the gun ports....also note the tree nailing finally done.

Then, moving inboard, all of the main deck cannons have now been rigged.

Next, I'll be adding the tiny swabs and rams (so often neglected in models of war ships)...,.
Note:  This shot reminded me, I still need to add the quoins to each cannon carriage.

Trying to decide on the use of shot garlands, or brass monkey's for this ship.  I'm leaning toward shot garlands mounted on the bulwarks.  I can't find anything to tell me when brass monkey's came into use.
Would appreciate any input from some of the historians on that issue.

Also playing around with some very small swab buckets and powder boxes.

From what I'm reading, the smaller deck demi cannons on the upper decks would have been supplied with shot boxes, rather than shot garlands or brass monkeys.  We'll cross that bridge whinst we arrive there.

BLACK VIKING reacted to hamilton in Bluenose by hamilton - 1:64 - POB - from Model Shipways plans
    Hello there:

This log will document my first attempt at a scratch built ship model. I've chosen to start with something more or less straightforward -- a 1:64 scale plank-on-bulkhead Bluenose based on Model Shipways' plans.

I purchased the plans for the 1:64 MS Bluenose several years ago while I was working on the Amati 1:100 Bluenose. I wanted the plans as reference for the rigging, which on the smaller Amati kit had been quite radically simplified. Since then, the plans have been gathering dust in a drawer. But I always imagined that I might return to them once I felt ready to embark on a scratch build.

The choice of Bluenose, then, was guided by the fact that I own the plans, which include reference drawings of all the laser cut parts, as well as by the fact that I've built the Bluenose before (though in a smaller scale). I also felt that, though clearly the principles are different, cutting my teeth on a p.o.b build would be a good way of getting into scratch building with an eye to a fully framed ship model.

In any case, everyone knows the history of the Bluenose, so I won't repeat it here. This log will be more like a documentation of my clumsy entry into scratch building. Since I'm also working on the Mamoli America as a gift for a friend, the Bluenose build will no doubt be very slow. I also plan on continuing with kit builds alongside this project, which will also no doubt slow it down.

The need to acquire some tools (and save some money in order to get them) will also slow things down a bit - currently, I'm equipped with a bandsaw, which I'll use to cut the centre keel pieces and bulkheads, but I can already see the utility of a disc sander and mini drill press.....I think for this build I can wait on other things like a mini table saw, but I'm going to assume that the priority of tool acquisition will become clearer as I work through the build....

I know that there are a lot of Bluenose logs here on MSW, but I hope that this log will add something to the mix. For starters, here are a couple of photos - my tracings of the centre keel pieces and a practice-run at the bow piece using 1/4 basswood - it's pretty rough, as you can see. This was made to help me get a feel for the bandsaw and is out of scale thickness in addition to being kind of ratty. I'll be using 3/16 birch ply for centre keel, bulkheads, rudder, and sternpost. I bought some of this today at a local hobby shop, but it is not very good (lots of warping). I'll use this to do more bandsaw testing and try another source for the ply.

Well that is all for now....those who've looked in on my America (and perhaps other logs) will know that the frequency of my posting is quite idiosyncratic, so sorry about that....I'll try to be more diligent in the future!!

After a few re-do's ( cut a shroud instead of a ratline at the fore mast )
I have make the lower shrouds and the ratlines.
    Futtock staves and catharpins.
I must say, after I cut the shroud I have remove all of it at the foremast and re-do the shrouds.
They are better then the first time.
So the re-do was not lost time.
Only use a little more rope......

I can talk and talk but I think that you wanna see some pictures.

    Hi folks,

I've finally finished the hull planking on the cat.

I should mention that I used the reference for the build of the real life cat that Michael Mott provided (http://www.woodboatbuilder.com/pages/maid-planking.html) to determine the lie and number of planks to use. That is one sweet boat.

My biggest challenge was figuring out a solid clamping system, something I wasn't entirely successful with. The pictures are after a coarse sand. I am going to buy some walnut stain to try to mute the contrast between the planks.

    Clamping system:

I added thin cheeks to the stem so that I could make a rabbet for the planks. I used a notch system on the planks so that they would fit into the rather narrow rabbet. Worked ok.

    Planking completed:

    Best, Ian

The first of the six sculptures is shown in this picture. They represented Consilium, that is Counsell; Cura, that is Care; Conamen, that is Industry; Vis which implied force; Virtus or Virtue; and Victoria, that is Victory. This description of the figures is taken from the text of "A True Description of His Majesty's Royall Ship" by Thomas Heywood written in 1638.

Two of the six sculptures are completed and mounted on the pedestals. Note the bottom of each sculpture forms the top of the pedestal.

A side view of the new sculptures.

So great news! I've managed to spend the past four hours finishing up the starboard planking. I am very pleased in that I have finally planked a ship with no stealers nor any drop planks. I have 22 strakes plus the garboard from bow to stern. Granted I have to replicate this on the port side but I am confident I can do this now. I think all that reading I have been doing over the past several months on planking has finally sank into my head. One day I may even be able to do it in one planking but lets not rush things. Haha.

I've done some initial sanding on the hull but will of course do more before I apply a finish. I must say that the Mahogany wood from Crown Timberyard has been great to work with. Much better than what came with the kit. I honestly do not think I could have gotten the same results using the kit supplied wood as the strips edges left a lot to be desired in terms of straight and square. They do work fine in small areas and for deck furniture so I do not feel they were a complete waste.

Now it's onward to the port side. I will start layout tomorrow and planking also perhaps. As always enjoy the pictures and thanks for stopping by.

Another pedestal has been completed and mounted on the bulkhead. They are proving to be difficult to hold on to when carving as I accidentally ran the tip of my left thumb into the blade of my Preac saw a few days ago. A dumb move for sure! Now that it is healing, I can churn these out a little faster.

In the meantime I did fashion a couple of heads for the beak based on a keyhole design that allowed standup and seated use. I will mount these on the beak head after the side panels are fastened.

Thanks everyone for the comments and the Likes.  It is hard to believe that so much time has passed since I last updated my build log.  I have been working on finishing up the interior of my Longboat.  I turned some belaying pins using my dremel too lusing it as a lathe.  They were very small, but I found that the more I made, the results kept improving.  I also made the windlass and after the third attempt, I finally made one that I was satisfied with.

Here are some pictures of the work that I have done.
