That's spot on, on the other side you are quite proud when you actually made a ship of that heap of wood...

puckotred got a reaction from Rik Thistle in New to ship modelling? But what do you build first?
My first wooden model was HMS Badger from Caldercraft. Except for the quality of the wood (that almost put me off the whole shipmodel thing) the kit was a wonderful entry to wood ship building. The instructions are step by step all the way. The rigging part took you from start point, up to this block, down to that block and behind this line down to belaying point.... I still take a glance at these instructions when I do the rigging on models where rigging instructions are just a bunch of red lines on a drawing...

Remember that Dusek is now reissuing the Mamoli kits. Quality can not be compared to the old kits before the fire...

Exactly, cant complain about the wood, some stuff was redone and Daniel is always willing to send parts if something is missing, also it's nice communicating with him on any topic.

    64mm without the tail.
A great chunk of a figurehead!

DeAgostini gives me a second set of notebooks and parts. Therefore, if I have more time I will make the next model my own way. It will be dark wood with a black finish and the decorations will be golden only under red. The naq nave's coat of arms will be colorful.

This is how I made the rudder. I guess the original is more elaborate, but it's better than what DeAgostini wants you to do.

The deck. On the original almost no planks have the same width due to different nationalities working with different measurements. I did four butt shift

No where near the original but better than DeAgostini...

And here is the big problem. Theres almost no space to work on trying to do a good keel planking. This is my third attempt under way before she went in the closet waiting until all shipments have arrived.

I found the thin strips easy to peel off and easy to sand off, so when  you have taken the pictures for your blog you could always replank the keel and rudder...

You are doing a great job, and I wish I could do the painting you do.. I am way behind on that. Being colorblind takes away the fun in painting hundreds of figures...

All the spanish cannons I found was breeched the ordinary way.
I have built one cannon for alignment purposes and I just inserted a brass rod in the hole so it looks like a bolt or something...

OK, to get started, I won't re-post all the pictures of the kit's contents - there are a number of good posts of those.  I heeded all the advice about fairing the bulkheads as best as possible before gluing them to the spine.  I also cut a 1mm deep by 2mm wide rabbet all along the stem, keep and stern post (leaving a 3mm wide surface) to aid in planking and with the bearding area forward of the stern post.  I did not glue on the walnut prow at this point to keep from damaging it during the fairing process.

It looks great! Have you decided what to do with the mast? I would do only the lower mast. It's just a piece of the ship so why not do a piece of the mast as well?

On the Götheborg the inhaul tackle was not attached when we fired the cannons....
