    Hello again my friends

just a Little update. I started with the standing rigg now... the stay from bowsprit to foremast (foremast-stay... not sure if this is the correct term). The instructions could be a Little more detailled, but I think the more you understand what the ropes are made for the easier it will be to follow the plan. Next will be the shrouds on the foremast... I am curious...  Pls comment when you see any discrepancy in the rigging. I want to improve my knowledge and techniques always...

Thats it for the Moment... next update will come soon (after the shrouds... obviously in two weeks or two years )

    Happy modelling to all

Some progress to report,  I was have some issues with the veneer I purchased to make planks from.  It was really brittle so when tried to cut it with an xacto style blade it wouldn't cut cleanly, the material kept splintering.  When I tried the bandsaw the material was so thin it would get stuck under the fence.
My solution was to construct a new saw "table" out of sheet styrene to which I glued a fence fixed at the correct width, in this case 4mm. This jig was just taped to the saw table.
To prepare the veneer I cut a 32 inch sheet in two and glued the two halves together, giving me a double thickness sheet of 8x16 in.  This was then backed with blue painters tape to cut down on splitting.
This technique worked well, after edge sanding I think the finished planks look pretty good, pics follow.

@bindy: Yes my dear friend... the progress is so cute...  every step you take you reach a new aim... and it works out so really really satisfying - in a deep and content matter. I love this kind of modelling even more. BTW... on Saturday I will visit the worlds biggest toy fair in Nuremberg, where ALL manufactures will show their products an novelties - perhaps there are really novelties and I can take some pics... If - I will show them

I have no doubt Euromodel's Defflinger will give you a challenge. There is one option if you can afford it and that is to buy the kit and assess for yourself if you have the confidence to start building,if not, then you could always buy a simpler kit to act as a stepping stone. The quality of the materials, plans and fittings is amongst the best on the market,it is purely the lack of comprehensive instructions that make things harder.Another point is that their kits do not come with a mountain of precut plywood parts, you are expected to make items out of the solid wood provided.I personally replace any precut plywood parts that are visible with solid wood,so I don't mind.
    Kind Regards Nigel

    Hello my fellow friends...

I finished the masts - and now will start the great adventure with ropes, lines and a lot of Fittings... also called rigging

But I admit that the building up to now is not as difficult as I expected. I thought there would be much more problems but everything became good.  I had so much fun and joy and relaxing moments - and the few problems were great to find solutions. I learned so much about modelling - not only put some parts together but more and more create the model. Ist amazing, great and really fulfilling. I promise - the Half Moon will not stay alone in my living room... At the moment I feel dashing to build the Derfflinger by Euro Models as next model... Has anyone any expierence with this model?

Well - the bowsprit is glued, he foremast also. I will do like Popeye recommended: From bow to stern and starting with the standing rig.

    Hi all...

is this "problem" with the bowsprit typicall for Euro Models? I mean do they always force you to "scratch" although you would expect a detailled plan? Its because I also want to bulid a Euro Models kit some far away day (Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde). It seems it will be good to gain more and more expierence before I dare to go to Euro Models... But on the other hand this hobby is such a good thing to learn about models and ships... Thanx that there is a forum, like MSW

    Hi Max!

I loved your Half Moon before, but I have to say that even having just one mast on it has transformed it into something even better!  It is amazing how different ships look when the masts go on.

Well done! I really like the color tones you used. I agree about how nice this kind of modelling is, and the oportunities to tweak the build and do it your way seems endless.

    Hi Max,
There is really no problem with the bowsprit. It is just that the Euro kits are set up more for builders that have some scratch building experience. You must really examine the plans (which are superb, thank goodness) and then plan an overall course of action before building anything. It is actually much more fun and challenging this way.

    Max,
Good to see you buying in to these comments about the bowsprit. There is no problem at all for Vince, Brian or myself; its just a matter of how we interpret these Euromodel plans. No, they are not scratch builds and I would prefer to call them quasi-scratch. The drawings are phenomenal in their detail so there is no problem there. The thing about these plans is that once you start building a Euromodel ship, you are 'drawn into a vortex' and cannot help but add far more detail to the basic build. It is a little addictive to say the least and once you start, you find yourself reaching for references that will enable you to add your own extra bits and pieces. You do not have to do this at all and just build a basic model. Do you have to be very experienced ?  Not really but having built a couple of other ships would be useful and Euromodel is endeavouring to publish detailed notes.

I am currently strongly focused on building the ship of your dreams - the Friederich Wilhelm zu Pferde (a German frigate) - and it is the most fantastic ship I have ever built. Having said that much, have a look at the Euromodel website under 'Customer Assistance' and see what I am writing.

Trust I have addressed your concerns Max.

standing rigging first...........some of the running rigging lines will need to be tied to these lines in one way or another.   a lot of folks start the rigging from the mizzen to the bow,   I've had good luck going from bow to stern.....so it's probably not a hard rule.  I guess it depends on what you want to do in that case.   but yes.......standing rigging first,  shrouds and ratlines second,  and the running rigging last

@popeye I am glad I spent the money for this lathe... makes it so easy to get along with the masts... tried before only sanding or a drilling machine, but this way ist - of course - the best. Was about 110 Euros.

@jct I think veneer is easier to handle - and you will have more choice of wood

I finally have a day to spend some time with this build.  The lower bulwarks and lower deck glued down, and dry fitting/marking all the decks and supports.  Still waiting on the carriages from Corel and have some lighter deck wood ordered.  I will plank all the bulwarks and depending on how it looks, may leave it rather than paint it.  Doing one deck at a time will be very time consuming, however, starting on the lower deck with my thoughts of how I want it to appear will be a great help as I hope to improve as I move to the upper decks (which will actually be seen).

    For the last update:

Those are the ship overall pictures. Following I bring some questions, since I got 2 "black sheep" deadey riggings

After pulling the strings very hard, some of the rope ran loose and I couldn´t keep everything aligned. Question is: In a sailing ship, how much the deadeys alignment matters? On the model´s instructions deadeys are even worse than mine, each in a different line and, as my wish is to show an aged ship, it´s possible this could be put aside as an overrated issue? Should I bring down those two rogue deadeyes and put them on the same line?
