Frank, That is good news. I'm happy to be following in the original builders footsteps. I noticed a slight variation on each side of mine as the channels come to life. Mark, It will be a while. I have been in contact with Fred Hocker, and he will be sending me jpg's of the Vasa main mast. He said that it has eleven separate parts. So after I finish that, I will start on the main mast lower top. At that time the milling machine should get a workout. But first I will also need to buy an other attachment for it. Mark, Looking so excellent. This is a good opportunity to compare kits. Your Sergal mast tops are so easy to work with. The enclosed pic is how Corel approached this part of the kit. As you can see there are several solid pieces of rounded wood, along with all needed "rings" For this Corel includes cast metal rings with small stubs. The wood cross members need to be all individually cut from stock. So needless to say, when I get there I will have to scratch build five of these platforms piece by piece. Grrrr (:-) Michael

B.E. Yes there will be one on the port side as well... And it (they) have not been sized, edge trimmed or mitered at the tips. It was just a positioning example. Though you have given me a thought, I might add long poles at the stern to allow for cod fishing, however against Swedish navy rules that might have applied at the time. That fish was certainly in abundance at that time. Michael

Joachim, Thanks so much. But with all due respect I also think of your work when it comes to what you just kindly noted about my efforts. Your AV is so excellent. And you have built the Corel Wasa, so you certainly know its weaknesses. I still refer to yours occasionally for a look on how something should look on mine. At the end of the day, sort of speak, Its an enjoyable challenge to add to the basic issue. However, I think that I will always need a kit from which to start. Those builders that, on the scratch side, build their ships frame-by-frame are certainly extreme artists. Michael

John, They did. In fact I believe that they were the ones who were also involved in funding the search and its subsequent resurrection. One of those "must see" ships before we turn into somebody's floor dust. Michael

Hi everyone, Firstly happy New Year (:-) Taking a break from building the channels I thought that the perpendicular anchor catheads would be good time filler. As you note, this small update is just a starting point. That timber is wrong as well. Ouch, on the view from on the weather deck pic you can see two small holes just to the right of the cathead timber. These two pilot holes I drilled to determine the height, as it would come through on the weather deck. Well, I drilled these from the outside of the hull and grrrrr, they were in the wrong place. I should know better than to work in the shipyard only one day after New Year's Eve. PS: As you can see in the first pic the 1:1 at one time had those mounted, but no longer. Maybe it was a weight issue? Michael

Frank, Thanks for the link. Hmmm they sure have beautiful ships there. Re: sander I have one that also has a sanding belt on one side. I was not aware that these tools were also known as thickness sanders. I will have to learn how to do that. Michael

Some pics of the main mast. The "Dream Vasa" site prob. has a more accurate looking main mast. Clayton's Vasa seems to have used that look as well and not Landström's The Royal Warship VASA for the main mast assembly. Though I asked Clayton how he put it together and he said that he "scored" the mast to make it look as though it was assembled from several pieces. Michael

Mark, Super impressive update. You are right your cannon wash looks perfect. You painting details on the figures are also very beautiful. You are very nicely capturing the look of the Vasa. Are those the cannons that Sergal includes in the kit? They look so much better than those Corel's "parts bin" issues. Michael

John, In Stockholm at the Vasa Musett. You as a fan of visiting ships this is highly recommended. It is the second most visited museum in Europe, with over a million visitors a year. Of course the ride to get over there aint cheap (:-) PS: Do NOT visit Stockholm in the dead of Winter. ! --------------------------- OOPs JanV had just answered above. (Winter still holds) MIchael

Joachim, Nice to see you back at "work" in your shipyard...you are doing nice work with the ropes. Having a ropewalk is so helpful. The kit supplied ropes are usually inadequate, especially on a ship such as yours where so much attention to details are everywhere. Michael
