I find the ubiquitous X-acto knife with assorted blades works well. Assorted blades for different materials and functions.

Welcome to MSW, Derrick. Feel free to start a build log as it's a great way to meet other builders and also get help when needed.

Hello from Seattle - looking to buy a built ship
mtaylor replied to wyapa's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW. Chris is very much spot on. There are some specialty houses like the one he listed. but it's been awhile since I did any looking about for them. It would take some Googling to find them. Good luck on your quest. -

Welcome to MSW. I'm assuming this is a working steamer for say pond use? We've had very few of those but we have had pond ships (non steamers) and static steramers. I suggest you open a log in the scratch area as it's the appropriate place to let lus follow along.

The carving issue of differences is interesting. Would it have been intentional? Perhaps two different carvers with one on each side? Or maybe the same carver does one side, flips it over and does the other? I can that no matter it was done back then that there would be some differences between the sides. either by design or inadvertently during carving.

Keeping my head in the game.....
mtaylor replied to Egilman's topic in 3D-Printing and Laser-Cutting.
I'd say yes, do a log. It keeps us interested and helps the builder to focus. We do need our distractions from real life issues and I and others are doing it. -

I think thats a typo. It should be "spiling". From Google: "Spiling is a technique used in building wooden boats in which a smaller component is used as a pattern against which the outline of a larger component can be drawn. This is often used for creating planks on traditionally built boats that have complex shapes."

Carving, to me, is one the dark arts that needs lots practice. You seem to be mastering it very well.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
